Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups GX4100 Electric Coffee and Spice GrinderCustomer Review: Krups GX4100 - Good for the Money Summary: 4 Stars
The Krups Coffee/Spice Mill is a good value for the money. I use it primarily for grinding toasted seeds for Indian dishes (cardomman pods, cloves, cumin seed, peppercorns, coriander seed, mustard seed, chiles etc.). I read the reviews on how the plastic lid will 'cloud' from certain spices (e.g., cloves) and that doesn't matter to me. This grinder isn't a piece of artwork - it's a cooking tool. Where I used to spend 20 minutes with a hand-operated mill, the Krups does the same thing in about 5 seconds. It cleans up easily - it's all self-contained and there aren't any burrs to clean out - it's totally blade-operated. In a perfect world, it would grind more precisely (fine to coarse) - but that would require burrs and the cleaning associated with them. So for me and my needs, it's a good value for the money. The time I saved with the first usage more than pays for the machine.
Customer Review: Quick, versatile, handsome, quiet, durable and easy to clean. Summary: 5 Stars
I have had mine since 1997 (or maybe 1996?), when it cost a hefty $50 or so. I used it almost every day for a long time, for coffee. I got lazy a couple years ago & started using already ground coffee, so it was relegated to a high cupboard.
It has resumed a prominent place in my kitchen, as I have discovered the joy of cooking fresh, organic food for my growing family. I now use it for nuts, seeds and grains! I was using other grinders, then got a clue, pulled this out and VOILA! I am SOO impressed with it's simple design, speed, durability, versatility AND it's not as noisy as other grinders/blenders (I do my best work late at night, after the bumpkin is asleep).
In my very practical, no-frills little kitchen, this is a handsome, functional product that I have enjoyed for many years, and it has proved itself to be a great purchase.
Customer Review: Buying a 2nd. after ten years service! Summary: 5 Stars
After ten years plus and thousands of pots of coffee, we'll be buying another Krups Coffee and Spice Grinder. I've reviewed other possibilities and am deciding that this quiet (relatively, for a grinder!), good looking workhorse will be the one to purchase again. This morning, the little button that engages the lid with the body, to start the grinder broke off. I don't consider this a product failure after so many hours of service. The Krups Coffee and Spice Grinder has the capacity to grind a full, rich 12-cup pot of coffee...The small inconvenience of some of the finer grounds sticking in the bottom is often quickly solved by a few sharp raps with the palm of the hand against the housing -- no big problem that that procedure or a spoon/brush can't solve easily and quickly. In my opinion, a little pricey, but a sound buy.
Customer Review: twice-a-day grind Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this grinder 2 months ago to replace my second burned-out Kitchen Aid coffee mill/grinder. I bought this Krups because of its name, as well as its cool look. Unfortunately, I don't like the way it functions. The top is very difficult to twist into place-- an action that must happen before the unit will grind. Furthermore, there is so much static electricity in the lid, that I always have residual coffee grinds dropping onto the counter as I remove it. There's also a sizable amount left in the chamber after I dump the grinds into the filter. Even though it was only a fraction of the fancy Kitchen Aid grinder's cost, I'm unhappy with its performance. I've already started looking for another stainless or brushed nickel grinder that I can leave on my kitchen counter.
Customer Review: Not a great option for spice grinding Summary: 2 Stars
I received this product as a gift, as the salesperson promised that it would work great for grinding spices. It doesn't. Uneven grinding, not catching some of the spices that sit on the bottom, and others spray to the top of the cover where the blades cannot reach, and if you have to use it for longer periods of time it heats up and blanches the flavor out of the spices. The plastic top has cracked and pieces broken off so many times (but continues to partially snap into place) that the spices spray everywhere when used.
I do not use this for coffee grinding, therefor I cannot give a review as to it's performance for which it is originally intended. This is only for those who do a lot of spice grinding.
