Customer Review: Thoughts on this kettle 18 months on...

So, I originally wrote a review for this kettle back in January 2009, but the product page is no longer there and I had to delete it. It was a fairly positive review too:
"I've always used stainless steel kettles rather than plastic ones, so I was a little skeptical about this product. However, unlike many others here I haven't noticed any unusual or overwhelming plastic odors when drinking my tea/coffee, and I think it's important to use filtered/softened water if you can. In terms of performance, this kettle is fast and efficient. I like the way you can quickly fill it via the spout without removing the lid, or the regular way by taking off the lid. I also like the way the lid locks in place and the way the kettle doesn't leak a lot of steam (which can wreck the underside of kitchen closets with all that moisture). It feels solid despite it being mainly plastic, and the water indicator is very clear and visible from both sides. Overall, I'm very happy, and haven't noticed problems with the on/off switch either. I hope it lasts though. I had a beautiful Krupps steel kettle prior to this one, but its flip-up plastic lid broke to the point of being almost impossible to open with my fingers. At least this one has a removable lid which seems to lock tightly."
But now it's June 2010 and the kettle has crapped out on me. A nasty plastic odor finally started to emerge, so I think the kettle became defective and started to overheat the water or melt the plastic because it became overwhelmingly powerful when drinking tea/coffee, and the inside of the kettle smelled unpleasant. Perhaps something went wrong with the heating element or sensor? This bugs me because I never even boiled the water until it clicked off, preferring to cut it off before that stage because fully-boiled water isn't always the best thing for coffee. However, perhaps this is what caused it to malfunction, which isn't very good design, and I was probably right to be skeptical when I initially bought this like I mentioned in my original review.
I'm a little disappointed, and have chosen to try the little Adagio Teas 3 UtiliTEA Variable-Temperature 30-Ounce Electric Kettle instead as it gives a little more control over temperature and is fully stainless inside.
