Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 468-42 Moka Brew 8-Cup CoffeemakerCustomer Review: Better that the average drip coffee maker - Summary: 5 Stars
We live at 8300' elevation in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, so our well water is cold and pure.
Because the machine boils the water to create steam, which is then forced through the grounds, the coffee is "piping hot" when the process is finished. The flavor of the coffee from this machine compared to our past drip machines is noticeably better - making it well worth the extra dollars we spent to buy this machine, yet hundreds less expensive than the Jura Capresso type automatic coffee makers.
It is fun to have a coffee maker that most people have not seen before, and when they taste the coffee, they really appreciate it.
There are some minor quirks, such as the special filters, but we are the type of people that can deal with things, especially when the reward for doing so is better coffee.
This machine extracts all the best from the beans, and is a fun way to do it.
Enjoy.
Customer Review: Fantastic coffee Summary: 5 Stars
I am a coffee nut, plain and simple. I have literally over 10 ways here at home to make coffee, and I roast coffee, oh 3-4 different ways. Let's see, oven, stove, whirly pop, and small 2 oz roaster. When this Krups came around, I was skeptical probably b/c I didn't understand it at first. The key to thinking about this, is espresso richness in large volumes without bitterness. It just extracts full flavor very quickly, like an espresso shot, but in a 8 cup quantity. And it works. To me, this is the single best way to make coffee out there. It probably ranks alongside French Press, but this method produces coffee that is a bit thinner and doesn't leave appreciable amounts of grounds and/or dust in your cup. The main thing to adhere to, however, is that you must use espresso ground all the time. And you must have a good grinder to achieve a consistent grind. Other than that, this baby rocks. Plain and simple.
Customer Review: Superb and innovatve coffee maker Summary: 5 Stars
Bottom line: This unique maker makes the best cup of coffee I have ever made in the home: deep, rich, and flavorful - not at all comparable to the "thin" taste I have seen with drip makers. Another bonus: durability. I have used this steadily for almost three years without a breakdown: also far more than any drip maker I have ever had. Yes, cleaning takes longer - but ritual is part of the true joy of coffee making and is something one can learn to enjoy - when you consider the quality of the product you are looking forward to. Yes the filters are hard to find, but there are workarounds for this. Another intangible bonus: the unique sounds of tortuously pressurized air the maker releases through the coffee cycle - more an act of giving birth than a simple passage of water through grinds. A rare product: something that actually makes your life "better."
Customer Review: Great coffee every time Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned the Moka Brew for over three years. I love it! I am even thinking of buying a second unit so I can have one at home and the other at work. I find the Moka Brew easy to use and clean. The taste of the coffee is superior to any other home brewed coffee I've ever tasted. I usually use French Roast coffee beans and set the grinder between espresso and fine.
The carafe is fragile, I think I've replaced it twice now. The directions say to take the lid apart by unscrewing the small brass screw for proper cleaning. It would be just my luck that the screw would end up in the garbage disposal. The few times that I have checked, there has been nothing to clean out.
All in all, it is simple to use, makes a great tasting cup of coffee, and is easy to clean up. What more could a coffee snob want?
Customer Review: Very Finicky Machine Summary: 2 Stars
I really, REALLY wanted to like this coffee maker. I was able to brew two good pots of coffee but the rest were bitter and awful. Also, the burnt smell at the end of the brew really bothered me after a while (even though it's not a part of the taste).
I searched online for tips, tried various grind sizes, tried double filters (on top and bottom), tried single filters, weighed my beans, weighed my ground coffee, tried three-day fresh roasted beans, measured the water amount: nothing but bitter coffee. Yuk!
In the end, I sent it back. I decided there were far too many variables involved in brewing a great pot of coffee with this machine. I know it is possible but replicating and being consistent wasn't something I was able to do. I opted for a Technivorm instead and have been really happy.
