Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: Good ice cream, flimsy parts
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this because it came very highly rated in a magazine.
I've had it about a year and rarely used it because I have a small, very packed apt freezer and I really had to plan to freeze the bowl. The ice cream was good when I got around to making it but the reason I'm writing my first ever amazon review tonight is that I want to warn you the parts are iffy. First the paddle snapped - it was still usable, but broken. Then the top broke in the dishwasher. And as I was cleaning the base, I just noticed goopy liquid leaking out of the seal around the base. And I'm not banging the stuff around I swear! Quite disappointed really.

Customer Review: Not as durable as I hoped
Summary: 3 Stars

I made ice cream often using crushed ice and rock salt. This is much more convenient. I have been able to start after setting the bowl in the freezer for 12 hours. I broke the paddle after trying to get a sample out of the maker with a spoon. Fortunately, I was able to get a replacement from Krups. I have been careful to wash and dry the bowl completely after each use. I think, water gets in between the plastic outer and metal inner bowl. It freezes and cracks the inner bowl. It is a bad design flaw. Now I am getting the freezing liquid stuff all over the place. I am in the market for a new one after three years of use.

Customer Review: Warped lid or something
Summary: 1 Stars

After a few years of very occasional use, the last two times I've tried making ice cream I find that the lid (which is very hard to wrestle down in the first place) pops off midway through the process. This is basically a disaster because once the lid pops off and the paddle moves out of alignment you can't really get it working again because the ice cream freezes over the spot the paddle should fit into. It is intensely frustrating. After reading the reviews here I realize I'm not the only one this has happened to. It's a relief because I thought I was somehow doing something wrong. Do not buy this machine, buy a cuisinart.

Customer Review: The Soup's On!
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this ice cream maker for Christmas 2000. I tried to follow the directions in the booklet which comes with it, however, I am yet to make some "eatable" ice cream! I have had no luck getting the stuff to freeze. I made sure the barrel was frozen solid, and refrigerated the chilled mix, but no luck. My daughter has enjoyed the frappes, that is the only consistency of what I was able to reach. In other reviews, they say that it is a pain to set up the lid and so on, I found that to be fairly simple. I am still trying new recipes, so hopefully, I will be able to "eat" some ice cream soon. :-)

Customer Review: So much fun to use!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not a kitchen maven, but it is nice to impress my friends and family with homemade ice cream. It is super easy with this machine. Yes, the lid can sometimes take a few extra seconds to fit on, but other than that it is a wonderful machine. Eating homemade vanilla ice cream is well worth this machine.

I keep the bowl in my freezer at all times in case I decide to make ice cream on a whim. I also sometimes buy William Sonoma ice cream mixes in the summer to use with the machine. I recommend buying a fun ice cream recipe book to help you experiment with new flavors of ice cream.
