Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Works great but noisy Summary: 4 Stars
I have made dozens batches in mine and I love it. Here's my reactions to the criticism I've seen here. It is noisy; I don't know how other models compare but they could well be quieter. The lid is hard to snap on but after a few tries it's not that bad. But the complaints about soft ice cream seem unfair. All home ice cream makers (ones without their own cooling power) will make soft ice cream. It's still good, but ideally I make it 2-4 hours before serving and it firms up just enough. You have to freeze the machine for a long time before using it, and the people who say that didn't help should check their freezer's temperature with a thermometer rather than just saying that they had their freezer on the lowest setting. Finally, I recommend "How to Make Ice Cream" by the editors of Cook's Illustrated for the authoritative guide to ice cream making. The recipes aren't exotic, but once you have the basics down, it's easy to modify these recipes.
Customer Review: Easy to use, easy to clean. Freeze it upside down! Summary: 5 Stars
We have a factory reconditioned unit and we're very pleased overall. It's very quiet, which was surprising considering that many people have found that theirs are noisy. Makes great-tasting ice cream, though planning ahead is a must because the recipes mostly involve heating the mixture, then letting it cool to room temp, then adding cream, then chilling. Not exactly a spur-of-the-moment treat, but the results are worth the minor additional effort. I agree that the top is rather aggravating to attach sometimes! *** I added this next part later... I finally figured out one reason the top is so hard to put on: it seems that after freezing, the core expands so much at the bottom that the blade rides too high, so you can't attach the top without extreme difficulty. What worked for me was to put the thawed unit upside down in the freezer to freeze it. Really! It helped considerably!
Customer Review: Beware, beware! Summary: 1 Stars
The frustrations others have expressed about this product are (sadly) true. I really cannot say anything positive about the Krups ice cream maker. It's too bad, because the first few times I used it, my ice cream turned out great. But little by little it became harder to use, until now the top attachment is impossible to fit onto the bowl, the motor is extremely loud and makes awful grinding noises when it runs, and sounds as though there are multiple parts loose inside... all this despite taking very good care of all the parts. I assume at least some of these problems have to do with the bowl expanding or warping as it gets cold... but that aside, the motor is clearly shoddy too. With a lot of patience it is possible to get it working even now, but I'm still ready to chuck the whole thing. I haven't use the Cuisinart model, but I have to hope it works better than this one...
Customer Review: It gets the job done Summary: 4 Stars
I decided to buy an ice cream machine last summer when my favorite ice cream parlor closed, which was the only one for miles around that sold cinnamon ice cream. (I can live without a lot of things but cinnamon ice cream isn't one of them.) I went to the housewares stores looking for the Cuisinart but they were sold out, so I bought the Krups instead. Lucky me. I took it home, popped the bowl in the freezer according to directions (for good measure I put the beater in there too), and the next day I was downing a plate of the most scrumptious cinnamon ice cream I ever ate. The machine's design could do with some improvement; it isn't very easy to get the top situated just right; and the recipe book isn't all that great. But in terms of performance, this little machine came through just fine. I'm looking forward to another summer full of cinnamon ice cream!
Customer Review: Delicous Ice Cream Summary: 5 Stars
This Krups Le Glacier Ice Cream Maker is Fab.You can make creamy smooth ice cream or thick rough ice cream. You can also make sorbets and yoghurts. Belive me the cherry lattie is georgous.Me and my boyfriend sampled some round my friends house and it's fab. That's when I decided to get my own. I must admit you do have to wait for over 3 hours for the ice cream to set and 24 hours for the steel bowl to freeze. The lid is a bit tricky to get on.It is well worth the wait. Here are some of my tips: 1.Practise to put the lid on and off a couple of times before you put your mixture in. 2.Keep you steel bowl in the freezer so you can just take in and out when you want. 3.Follow the instructions carefully before you clean your steel bowl.P.s Enjoy eating delicous ice cream, sorbets and yoghurts.
