Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: save yourself some money... Summary: 1 Stars
this ice cream maker makes a lot of claims, but one things it assures you of, it's not very sturdy. You can tell this right off the bat because once you get it home and look at the warrant you will find it to cover, not much, and be limited to a year. If it makes it a year ha, ha, ha...We are terribly disappointed as this was a gift for valentines day so I could make coconut ice cream for my hubby. Well the ice cream came out fine, but not because of this ice cream maker. You have to freeze the cylinder of the maker for at least 24 hours before usage. Even after that it does not properly freeze or cool your ice cream. A technique my mother taught me was to put the ice cream in a container and roll it every couple of hours for the first freezing time. After I used this "ice cream maker" the ice cream was not anywhere near done, and I ended up have to use my mom's technique. What was the point of all the money we spent on this? Not much. I wish everyone success, and if anyone knows of an ice cream maker that works, please let us know!!
Customer Review: This is one of our favorite kitchen appliances Summary: 5 Stars
Back when we were making up our wedding registry, my then-fiance (now husband) really wanted an ice cream maker. The store we registered at had three options: the Krups, the Cuisinart and one that used salt. We chose the Krups based on its smaller size and touted ease of use.The claims of ease were absolutely true! We keep the bowl of the machine in our freezer at all times so we're ready to mix up a batch of fresh, homemade ice cream with as short a wait as possible. The mixer is very strong and we've yet to mix up a batch too thick for it. It's also a breeze to clean up. You wouldn't believe the raves we've received on the varieties of ice cream we've made. What more could you ask for? Another reviewer mentioned the scarcity of recipes that came with the machine. To be honest, we've never tried any of them. The most requested batch we've made came from "Williams-Sonoma's Ice Creams and Sorbets" book - it's the recipe for Cantaloupe Sorbet with Minted Melon. We've also found Ben & Jerry's book to be a winner as well.
Customer Review: Love it!!! Summary: 4 Stars
We got La Glaciere as a wedding present five years ago, and promptly stuck it in a dark corner never to see the light of day again. Recently digging through the nooks and crannies of my kitchen, the little ice cream maker appeared. I decided to use it once before I donated it to Good Will.I'm so glad I decided to give it a chance. It makes really good ice cream -- quickly, simply, and in a nice, manageable amount. And as far as performance, even when we tried to screw it up by pouring in the ice cream mix before we put in the paddle (hint: don't let your husband in the kitchen), the machine was foolproof. I've looked at the other reviews, and I can see where someone might gripe about the awkward attachment of the lid to the machine, but that's really a trifle compared to the overall performance of the machine. As far as the ice cream not freezing, make sure that your freezer is at 0 degrees (a health requirement anyway), and you should be fine. Buy it, and eat luscious, homemade ice cream every day of your life!
Customer Review: Simple steps to simple pleasures Summary: 5 Stars
We've had this ice cream maker for about two years now. It has performed flawlessly. We prefer our ice cream more on the soft serve side and don't bother freezing the finished product further unless we have left overs. Previous reviewers have commented on the build quality. So far all of the components have held up to our use. This even after we poured in a mixture then attempted to turn it on to mix. The blade wouldn't turn and the motor whined. However, the blade did not break nor did the motor burn-out. The opening in the cover has proved more than adequate for pouring in the ingredients. Our tub has held up, but we make sure to wash it by hand in COLD water as to not thaw out the tub more than needed. In less than 24 hours it is ready to mix again. We do keep it in a separate freezer which is set to the coldest setting so I assume this helps in the recovery time. Overall, we are pleased with this purchase and even bought every household in our families one for Christmas gifts two years ago. Hope this helps.
Customer Review: Great in Concept, Not So Great in Use Summary: 2 Stars
Once I was able to get all of the parts to fit properly and the lid to lock in place, this machine made great ice cream. However, getting the equipment to work correctly was an exercise in futility. First of all, the instructions don't explain that you MUST have the blade in place before adding the ice cream mixture, else it will freeze right to the bowl, making it impossible for the blade to fit or turn. Once you make it past this hurdle, you move on to the challenge of putting the lid in place (there was a great deal of swearing in my kitchen the day of this machine's first use). On about my fourth use of the Krups machine, the blade cracked, which makes the process even more laborious. When I attempted to use the machine about a month ago, I found that I couldn't fit the lid in place at ALL, rendering the machine completely useless. I would have a hard time recommending this product to anyone. I'm going to give the Cuisinart model a try next time.
