Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 203-70 Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder with Stainless-Steel blades, WhiteCustomer Review: Not for spices at all! Summary: 1 Stars
I needed a spice grinder and got this because it was the only one available locally at the time. The box on it said "Coffee and spice grinder," and my father used one of these for coffee for years, so I figured it had to be okay. After buying it, it was obvious that the "spice grinder" part was a marketing gimmick as the included docs didn't talk about it at all. End result, while it did a fine job grinding, it is impossible to clean! Neither the metal bowl nor the blade can be removed, so you can't scrub it, especially the bottom of the blade. There is also a seam between the bowl and the plastic which collects ground spices. Unless you want your freshly ground cinnamon tasting like coriander and black pepper, don't buy this unless you buy one for each spice. I'm sure it does a fine job with coffee, but for spices, it is not good and I feel ripped off. I kept it and cleaned as best I could until I found a Kitchen-Aid model, that while not quite as good at grinding, is able to be cleaned. Much better!
Customer Review: For serious coffee drinkers Summary: 5 Stars
We are serious cooks and take our coffee seriously. Own two of these and the first one is at least ten years old and the newest one less than two. Grinds whole beans according to your desired taste. We own two simply because we like plain as well as flavoured whole bean coffee and simply wish to keep the flavors separate. Two helpful hints someone suggested that I pass on. Place this grinder on a small towel or pot holder as it helps muffle the sound. Secondly, invest in a good quality nylon paint brush that you can use to "sweep" out your coffee grinder weekly so that you have no grounds left as these can turn rancid over months and leave an awful taste. Oh and if this or any appliance breaks down contact the maker not Amazon.com and they will replace it. Krups is a reliable maker and I know firsthand that they stand by their products.
Customer Review: back to basics Summary: 5 Stars
We were sucked into the hype around burr grinders a few years back and tossed our old Krups grinder. It was actually an old one of my mother's and the top was getting a little ragged, chewed up. But this week we came back around and ordered this grinder. You just can't beat its simplicity. I like being able to measure out the exact amount of beans and grind it to my own preference. The burr grinder relies on presets for how fine the grind is. You also are trusting that, when you set it to grind 10 cups' worth of beans, that's what you will get. After a while those things start getting a little wiggy on you.
But not this unit. It grinds exactly what you put in and it grinds it coarse or fine, whatever you want. There's very little to go wrong because there's not much going on. No fancy dials or knobs. It's perfect.
Customer Review: Nifty Summary: 4 Stars
I finally used up one of my first warehouse purchases: onion flakes. I made onion powder for my homemade burgers in seconds. Wow, what fun. The clear plastic cover is washable but the blade part is not so I don't know how this is dealt with. I just plan on using this for spices and won't be picky about other flavors mixed in.
I purchased this because a mortar and pestle was not grinding up the five spice I needed for a recipe. There are just too many recipes I want to try that call for freshly ground up spices for me not to have this spice grinder.
Is this frugal? yes, grinding refreshes stale spices
Would I have purchased this used at a cheaper price off of craigslist? no
Did I shop around for the best total price including the manufacturer's website? yes and so should you
Customer Review: Life's a grind and this is my grinder. Summary: 5 Stars
I hope my silly byline caught your eye. Nothing compares to the aroma of coffee brewed from freshly ground beans. I've been using my trusty Krups Coffee Grinder for over ten years and it works like new. I put in a full scoop of whole beans (Kirkland 100% Columbian) and press the top and count to 5 seconds. If you grind any longer the grind will be too fine that it will clog up your paper filter and take longer to pass through. The amount I grind yields 3-4 cups of robust coffee. Once a week I use a damp paper towel to wipe out the residue grinds. The grinder is designed to grind coffee beans and I don't recommend using it to grind harder beans or grains. I have, on occasion, used it to grind my favorite herb. Just a few quick pulse presses and it's ready for my favorite "recipe". Get one today and grind away!
