Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 203-42 Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder with Stainless-Steel blades, Black

Customer Review: Outstanding coffee or spice grinder
Summary: 5 Stars

The Krups name may be new to many but it has stood for high quality in Germany for a long time.

This is a high quality product, with heavy plastic clear cover that doesn't quickly scratch and become opaque. It also has a powerful motor with sharp blades that gets the job done fast.

I use mine to grind the 1/4 cup of flax seed I add to my oatmeal every morning. I also pulverize dried spices with it.

Because the large capacity grinding bowl is shaped like an elongated "D" rather that a circle, it is slightly more difficult to clean. But the shape allows for a natural pouring spout that help prevent a mess on the counter. Use a very slightly moistened cloth to clean.

All-in-all the best quality inexpensive blade type grinder I have seen.

Customer Review: Perfect for my needs!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the third brand of grinder I tried, and the first two were total failures.
I work in Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, and I use mine for grinding pills to use in making food - Henry's Healthy Blocks - for the squirrels I raise. The Krups works perfectly. It grinds to a very fine powder, and does it very quickly. The powder is contained in the grinder - none escapes to float around the kitchen. It is simple to operate, and the top removes easily when you are done. (On one grinder that I tried it was next to impossible to remove the top because the fine powder got between the base and the lid, as well as managing to leak out, leaving a fine powder floating throughout the kitchen.) I am very happy with the Krups, and it sure beats trying to grind all those pills by hand.

Customer Review: We've used this every day since 1989!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a fantastic coffee grinder and I can't believe the exact same model is still available! My husband and I seriously bought ours in 1989 when we got our first apartment and have used it every day (at least once a day) since and it works as well now as it did then. We have seen other models and thought about getting them just because they have extra features, but we just couldn't rationalize buying them when this one does such a great job and has been so reliable. It is very straightforward and doesn't do anything fancy, but really, we consider ourselves hardcore java junkies and we don't need anything else. This grinder has seen us through several coffee makers--don't get me started--and has done a great job of grinding the coffee for over twenty years. What more can I say?

Customer Review: Good for drip coffee
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had this grinder (red) for 15 years and it has held up really well. My coffee maker of choice is a 12 cup drip coffee maker with a gold cone. After lots of experience discovered that you get the best results if you gently rotate the grinder while grinding. This mixes the beans and you get more consistent grounds. Darker coffee beans have more of a tendency to clump and not grind as evenly. Medium and light beans, though grind up well. I don't like espresso, but I've read that this grinder may not be a good choice for espresso. I have enough practice to know how many beans to grind in a single batch and how many seconds to grind. All in all, this is a good grinder that balances price with functionality. It's not a lot of money to spend to get fresh ground coffee!

Customer Review: Best on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never had any trouble with the grinder, which is not the case with other brands owned by friends. The oval shape is interesting; apparently has something to do with the way coffee whirls around when ground and is supposed to increase grinding efficiency. Whatever, it works.

I had two, one for spices. (we got an extra as a present, so I dedicated the older one to spice grinding.) But I don't recommend it for spices, and wish I could recommend something other than my marble mortar and pestle, but that's what I use. Why? The cover of the Krups grinder gets scarred from the tough stems of cloves, and I noticed even the edge of the plastic cover got nicked and chipped. Question: where did those plastic chips go? So now I pound away on the mortar and use the grinder for coffee.
