Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Krups 203-42 Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder with Stainless-Steel blades, BlackCustomer Review: Possessed! Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Krups Fast Touch Grinder a month ago and used it almost daily to grind coffee since then. The use is very simple - add coffee beans, plug it in, and push down button to grind. You can pulse and vary the time to achieve the grind of choice. It takes a a bit of experimenting, but isn't too difficult to get the hang of it.
A few days ago, I was grinding some coffee beans and suddenly the Krups became possessed. Specifically, I took my hand of the button and the grinder came to a stop. However, a few seconds later, the machine came back to life and was grinding the beans to a fine mist without me touching it. It took a few seconds for me to get over the initial shock and I unplugged the thing.
I suspect some grinds got into the depressor part of the grinder and so far I have not been able to get it out. I resorted to plugging and unplugging the cord from the outlet to grind my beans the last couple of days, but I'm probably going to have to come up with a more permanent solution soon.
Customer Review: A fine grinder Summary: 5 Stars
...this guy is. It grinds coffee. What more is there to possibly say about it? It does what it's supposed to do, uniformly, and well. The end result is consistent, providing I count off a consistent time (the same could not be said for the previous beast that dwelled in my kitchen). It's a good grinder---I use it fairly heavily: grinding about a half-pound every six or eight days (what can I say? I'm a student. Caffeine is my lifeblood.). I have had my unit for over a year, and it has neither developed irritating quirks nor broken and needed replacing: the blades have also remained sharp. The single word of advice that I would attach to this would be that you might wish a good, fairly long-handled and firm-bristled brush to clean it with: the shape of the lid and of the unit's base is such that grounds seem to adhere to the crevices. This is nothing that a washing of the lid can't address, but dunking the base in the sink has always seemed, well...inadvisable? It's a dependable machine: worth the money.
Customer Review: Well designed, best value, built to last Summary: 5 Stars
Had one of these for 10+ years and used it daily, lasted longer than my marriage and never once complained about me not doing the dishes or taking out the trash. Simple but effective design, extremely well built. As others posted, to adjust the fineness of grind, just pulse and/or shake it as you grind, and after a bit of time you will learn to how much time it takes and the sound it makes to get the right grind. I use a gold conical filter and rarely if ever have a problem with the coffee pot getting fine silt at the bottom, and I brew really dark coffee. It's also advisable to use a small brush every few times to clean the grinds that build up inside the lid and around the grinder bowl. This is true of any grinder. Also used with mediocre quality espresso machine and found it adequate, but if you spend $$$+ on an espresso maker and have the skills and/or desire to pull barista quality espresso shots, might as well spend another $250+ on a decent burr grinder.
Customer Review: 10 years and still going Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this grinder for 10 years and use it constantly. I buy all of my beans whole, so this little grinder has been well used. I purchased this grinder from a Spiegel outlet store in Chicago. At the time I was employed by them, so my incentive to buy this grinder along with a Krups coffee maker was my employee discount, without really doing any research or knowing anything about different brands of coffee makers/grinders. Both Krups products are still plugging away and making great coffee. The grinder has some minor limitations as stated in some of these reviews - such as longer grinding time - and the beans can also grind inconsistently (I've heard that is a consequence of the oval shape but I'm not sure if that is true). If you make sure your beans are at room temperature before grinding (for those of you who store beans in the 'fridge/freezer) that will help to lessen the wear on the blades. But it is a great value for the price, and highly recommended.
Customer Review: Perfect For My Needs Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first coffee grinder, and I don't think I could ask for anything more. I love the compact size. Each morning after I use it I stick it back in the cupboard. It takes about as much room as a large drinking glass. I took the advice of another reviewer and I pulse the machine to grind my coffee, in two-second intervals for a total of about 12 seconds. Supposedly, this keeps the grinder from heating as much...a good thing since heat affects the taste of coffee beans. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a little problem with the ground coffee sticking inside the container, but I have discovered that frozen coffee beans don't stick nearly as much, so I keep my beans in the freezer. Maybe that's a no-no to coffee snobs, but I haven't noticed any difference in the taste. After I'm finished grinding, I tap out the excess, and then I take a dry paper towel and wipe it out. I haven't tried grinding spices or nuts with this grinder.
