Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kness Mfg 102-0-019 Snap-E Mouse TrapCustomer Review: I think the cover is worth $1.29 Summary: 4 Stars
So just FYI, this is the same mechanism as in the D-CON covered mousetrap (sometimes called the "ultra set"). The D-CON version just has a plastic cover with an entryway. The setting pull bar goes outside the cover. For the cover you may be charged an additional $1.29 or so.
This makes it more expensive, but it might well be worth it. Certainly if you have pets, you would want the cover. A dog's sniffer won't set off the covered version. There are also advantages if you need to set some traps in a chaotic location like a kitchen where things might fall over and set off the uncovered version. Courtland J. Carpenter suggests using chocolate as bait (see his review) but this seems overly ghoulish to me, I'm not sure why. Let's try to keep chocolate, pest infestations and death all separate, okay Courtland?
Anyway, the main reason for the cover is for the squeamish--you don't see much of the dead mouse until you drop it in the trash. I got the covered version because my lady friend was on the less murderous side of personality types, and I didn't think she could deal with an uncovered trap. But guess what? She still needed me to do it. So that $1.29 didn't get me out of "bring out your dead" duty.
At first, I was pretty happy to do it--I felt like a hero, like St. George, slaying the dragon. But one day, emptying the trap by pulling up on the cover, I had a fellow-feeling with the mouse. Something about the cover on the D-CON version makes you feel like it's HIS house, like a dog-house. And it seemed that actually domesticity was the real trap, and I couldn't figure out why we were enemies. So if you don't have pets, you might find this uncovered version more conducive to your peace of mind. [37]
Customer Review: Better Than Any Other Trap Summary: 5 Stars
I put a video camera on the trap area to find out why I can't get the little bugger (3 weeks, no luck). He/She was able to eat and crawl all over the std style wood snap trap we've grown up with. He had no interest entering the live trap, no matter how much peanut butter I put inside. Didn't like the plastic jaws type, to small maybe. Got away to quick for the Victor big yellow paddle trap you can buy almost anywhere now. He would come out, look at the live trap and the jaw trap and have no interest in it. But, within 4 hours after I put out the Snap-E, the 3 week cat & mouse game (I was the cat) was over. The reaction time on these has to be half since the spring bar travels half the normal distance. The bait area is very large and is in the center hole of the paddle, not on the paddle but below the paddle, so he has to get fully inside. He was smart enough to nudge the old style trap to spring it, which worked. This one won't spring with a nudge, didn't work this time. Once it's set, it solid. Can be a little tricky getting a solid set, but if you have any feel for the mechanics of things and a little experimenting, it's pretty straight forward. Old trap, I had to put my fingernail under the bar where the mouse was. I felt dirty for hours afterwords, this one, not. It got him so fast, I don't think he got one bite, so I didn't have to even rebait. Unfortunately for the Snap-E company sales dept, you want to re-use it and not throw it away. It's so easy and sanitary to unload and re-spring. The old wood type, I just didn't want to reuse. From what I've seen in the first 4 hours of use, this thing is something else!Snap-E Mouse Trap
Customer Review: The Deadliest Catch-er Summary: 5 Stars
We thought we had a several mice running around... you can hear them in the ceiling, inside the walls. Mouse poop everywhere - under the sink, behind furniture, in places you would'd think! We tried peppermint oil, mothballs, electronic repellants, glue traps - they would work for a couple of days, a week or so, then you'd here the scratching noises again (good thing this was before Paranormal Activity came out).
We got serious and opted for death. We got some generic mouse traps from Home Depot, they were somewhat effective at about 50% kill rate. Half the time we would find the trap set off with the bait gone. We went for the brand name Victor traps next, and their kill rate was much higher, I'd say 75%. After 2 week or so, the traps were left untouched. Mouse problem solved? NO!!!
The demons inside the walls were still there... and they got smarter. They now leave all the traps alone. We tried different baits - chocolate, cheese, peanut butter. Dog food was perhaps the one they can't resist, but they were easy to steal (Kibbles balls) and the kill rate dropped down to less than 25%, even with the Victor.
So after much surfing on the inter-web, we finally decided to go with the Snap E. In about 2 weeks, we terminated about 40 mice. Yes, FORTY!!! This trap is a killer, with about a 95% kill rate. The trigger makes it very hard for lil' Mickey to steal the bait without setting off the trap. Being able to re-use the traps too is great, although it may get messy after several kills. The mice don't seem to mind... and they can't resist the Kibbles! An excellent mouse trap, perhaps the best ever invented. Death to Mickey!
P.S. This can be found on E plus Bay for cheaper.
Customer Review: This IS a better, MUCH better, mouse trap Summary: 5 Stars
Do not hesitate one more second if you are infested with vermin - buy this trap NOW. A couple of weeks ago we discovered unwelcome mice in the house following torrential rains and flooding.
First, we tried the Victor traps with only limited success - one mouse in 5 days with the peanut butter bait stripped from the other traps. Then, on the advice of the hardware store folks, the sticky traps - mice escaped. Finally, I decided to search Amazon (thank you Amazon) for mouse traps and came across this wonderful product.
I'd never heard of the Snap-E trap and probably never would have had I not come to Amazon. It is as close to perfection as you can possibly imagine - easy to bait, easy to set, easy to get rid of the dead mouse and then easy to set again. I will make a bold prediction - in my lifetime, there will not be a better mouse trap. It simply is not possible to improve on this design.
The first night we caught 4 mice! I've no doubt whatsoever that these traps will rid us of our problem once and for all as quickly as the four traps I purchased can kill the little rascals.
Say good bye to Victor for good. Buy this product and you will never look back.
Update: These traps just keep on working with ruthless efficiency. It almost seems unfair. The vermin just don't stand a chance. My next project - tackle the moles in the yard.
Further update: Absolutely no evidence of vermin whatsoever. The problem has been eliminated. I'll keep the traps out in the attic and in the unfinished basement. Trust me: you'll not find a better mousetrap anywhere for any amount of money. Simply an amazing device.
Customer Review: Great mousetrap Summary: 5 Stars
It seems that no matter where we live, mice find us. Or maybe it's just that many houses in New York are really old. Whatever the reason, we are not new to the mouse problem. I don't necessarily hate mice or wish them any ill, but I am unwilling to live with mouse droppings and expose myself and my family to various diseases mice carry. For years we have been looking for good mouse traps. Glue traps are just horrible; as much as I dislike mice,I don't want these little guys to suffer. I don't like the idea of poison either - the mouse could die in some place inaccessible, say between the walls, and then stink up the house for weeks. Humane traps are not very effective, are very expensive, and raise a question as to when and where in the big city I would release a mouse - in my backyard so that it can come back again? We even bought the electric mouse trap, which didn't work AT ALL, even though it cost over $20. Then I found these and decided to give them a try.
We didn't have a terrible infestation, but within the first few days caught 3 mice and haven't seen any sign of them since. From what it looks mice died almost immediately. The traps are very sensitive, so one should be careful when handling them and not leave them in places accessible to children. It is also very important to put the bait exactly in the designated place and not overbait. Disposing of dead mice is relatively easy, or so the husband says.
Overall, very satisfied with the product and would recommend it.
