Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid SNPA Pasta Maker Plates for Food Grinder Attachment for Stand Mixers

Customer Review: ignore the naysayers: some of the best money I have ever spent
Summary: 5 Stars

These attachments make fresh home made pasta a complete doddle. Using this add-on for the food grinder further extends the usefulness and flexibility of the superb KitchenAid mixers.

As for the bad reviews, the only way I can imagine someone damaging their mixer with this attachment is if they make the pasta too wet - the pasta dough looks like bread crumbs, as if it was barely damp flour - or if someone takes the instructions too literally - in the instructions it says to use pieces of pasta dough "the size of a walnut": if you grab some of the dough and squash it all up to make a walnut-sized lump I could see it damaging the mixer motor. I just dropped the dough crumbs "as is" into the grinder and the pasta flew out the end :)

To make your pasta healthier, use egg beaters instead of eggs (drastically reduces the cholesterol) and swap out some of the AP flour for resistant starch (reduces the glycaemic index), and enjoy your healthier fresh pasta!

Customer Review: Somewhat effective, if expensive, pasta attachment
Summary: 3 Stars

For what it is (all plastic), this item is rather expensive. But, since I already had the mixer and the food grinder, I went ahead and got this. I agree with the other users that some of the attachments (spaghetti, thinner noodles) make the pasta tend to stick together. More of a problem might be that you really have to tweak the recipe a bit to get a good consistency. I prefer this for lasagne or fettucini noodles myself. It is functional. I would not want to do a large amount of pasta in this at one sitting because I am afraid it would burn out the motor (upon doing a full recipe for the first time, smoke emanated from my mixer. A call to Kitchen Aid said this was probably normal, as my mixer wasn't that old and oil was burning off, but I never did a full recipe again). I would really love to instead get the rolling pasta plate attachment for the Kitchen Aid, but at (price) it's a bit too much of an investment to me. This is functional for what I need it for.

Customer Review: perfect so easy - dont know why bad reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

There are so many negative comments about these pasta plates I was so worried but ordered them anyway.

WELL they are awesome! I used plate #2 thick spaghetti. Yes the noodles stuck together, but that didnt matter. I used a fork to seperate them as they were cooking it was so easy!

3eggs, 2tbs water, 2 3/4 cups flour how much simplier can it be.

I mixed the dough in the kitchen aid for 2 minutes as it stated. Then kneaded by hand 2 minutes. AS dough was resting I assembled the meat grinder (sold seprately) and the plates. I broke up the dough in SMALL pieces (walnut size but the size of the walnuts you eat peeled and everything) I turned the mixer to 10 and I dropped the pieces in. It worked fast and great. I cut the pasta off with a knife every 8 inches or so and just draped it over the mixing bowl side. No seperating it. It was so delicious. You wont be disappointed! I wish I could add a photo

Customer Review: So much easier than I expected.
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading so many unfavorable reviews, I was hesitant to purchase this pasta attachment. I have made pasta using the roller/ fettuccini /linguini attachements, but I prefer spaghetti. The day after I received the attachment in the mail, I decided to try making spaghetti. I used my own pasta recipe, but I took the advice in the instruction manuel and I sifted the flour first to make it easier on the machine. I pulled the pasta dough apart into small chunks and dropped them into the feed tube, and it worked like a charm starting with the first batch. I didn't have any problem with the pasta curling. The spaghetti was somewhat warm and sticky when it came through, so I just seperated it with my fingers and tossed it with flour. I made over a pound of pasta, and it cooked up in 2 minutes. I will be using this attachment often!

Customer Review: If you LOVE your KitchenAid Stand Mixer...this is a no,no!
Summary: 1 Stars

I have a Profesional 6 model, and I did everything the recipe said for 1 batch of regular spaghetti pasta. It didn't kill the mixer, but the motor became very hot! I will never use it again. I also have the roto slicer/shredder, fruit/veggie strainer, food grinder & sausage stuffer attachments...none of these have even made my stand mixer very warm. --That tells me the pasta maker attachment is a bad product. I am thankful that my model is 525 watts...I could only imagine what would have happened if I had a classic 300 watt model!

My best advice is to pick up an inexpensive pasta machine or an Emperia hand crank pasta machine. They run between $20-40 without a motor or $80-120 with a motor (that you can also buy separately for $50-80). --A very small price to pay, if you want to keep your KitchenAid Stand Mixer!
