Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSM150PSWH Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, WhiteCustomer Review: Love the mixer..worried about the oil spill Summary: 3 Stars
I received this as a gift. I love to bake but really only get an opportunity to use my KA once a week. That said, I have had a problem with the small amount of oil from the machinery leaking out of the head of it (I can always wipe oil off of it before baking). I called their customer service and was told that this happens when the machine is not turned on a lot...that the oil seeps into the head and leaks out. WHAT?!?! Sure, it is food grade oil (meaning one can eat it and not get poisoned)but I do not like seeing it in my freshly ground meat or spotting my kneaded bread dough.
Now, before mixing anything, I will turn the machine on for a few minutes to get the oil back up where it belongs as per the directions of the friendly customer service person. She assured me that it was okay-that seeing more than a cup full of oil was bvad but this small amount was ok. (um...ok) That still does not do the trick-I still see oil. During the month of December, I used this mixer almost every day and still had the problem. For what was paid for the Artisan, I should not have to worry about "food grade oil" seeping into my food! Not only that but it cannot be good for the gear assembly for the levels of oil to be constantly seeping out.
After calling several other KA owners and being told they do NOT have this problem, I am going to call KA back and ask for a replacement.
Customer Review: Kitchen Aid has gone way down hill in quality. Summary: 1 Stars
My mother used a Kitchen Aid mixer her entire life, and when I got older and became serious about baking, I too thought I would buy a Kitchen Aid mixer, and I expected the mixer to be the only mixer I would ever have to buy. Wow, was I wrong.
I bought my mixer (WS4494931, Model KSM15OPSWH) yesterday and from the first use I had nothing but problems, odd sounds, odors, along with sparks flashing from the inside of the motor, and finally the device simply would not turn on. I returned the mixer to the store, and being the open-minded person I am, decided to give Kitchen Aid brand another shot. The second mixer still omitted an odor, but I was told that this was normal for a new mixer motor, and seemed quieter; however, speed 2 does not work. When I move the speed selector from Stir, to 2, there is no change in speed.
I bought a Kitchen Aid without doing research because I trusted the brand name, and of course because my mother used hers for so long, but once I started researching Kitchen Aid on the Internet, I see that I am not the only person who has experienced the same issues with Kitchen Aid mixers.
I am totally disappointed with my purchase and will return it to the store that I purchased it from. I will also not buy Kitchen Aid appliances again.
It's a shame that Kitchen Aid has let the quality of their product go down hill.
Customer Review: I can't stop baking Summary: 5 Stars
My 20-year-old Sunbeam stand mixer finally died, so I decided to purchase the KitchenAid because it is so popular and comes in so many different colors. After considering all the color options, I settled on white because of the price and because it matches other appliances in my kitchen. The mixer works beautifully, and I keep it out on my counter for easy accessibility. It is way too heavy for me to move around. I suppose the biggest problem I have encountered is the weight gain over the Christmas to New Year's holidays. This new toy of mine has encouraged me to bake all sorts of rolls, breads, pies, and cakes. My fresh whipped cream takes minutes. The whipped egg whites are beautiful. I just keep coming up with reasons to use this thing. After New Year's Day I am going to swear off the thing--but it is so easy to use. The splashguard keeps ingredients in the bowl and that handy spout is excellent for adding ingredients. Compared to my old faithful Sunbeam, the motor on this KitchenAid has much more power and can handle the kneading of the bread dough more effectively. Well, I am pleased with my purchase, and as always, I am doubly pleased with Amazon's service. I received free shipping. The product arrived a day before the scheduled date, and very quickly. It was in good condition upon arrival. The price was the best price out there.
Customer Review: Very versatile mixer! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this mixer 3 years ago, and use it to mix small batches of concrete for my model railroad projects, also for minor patching in the driveway. For larger jobs, probably one of the pro models would be better.
It also works well as a rock polisher. Just add some smooth stones, enough abrasive polishing compound to cover, and let it run on the "stir" setting for about 2 weeks, using the beater paddle. It's a little bit noisy, but putting it out in the garage solves the problem for me.
It also comes in handy for making bricks out of wet clay and straw. The dough hook is perfect for this! Be careful though, you need to add enough water or the thing bogs down and heats up. You can make enough brick batter to fill 4 average size brick molds, which can be made from scrap plywood lined with old carpet (You have to pull the carpet off before they completely dry. This is important!). Then bake the bricks at 1500 to 1800 degrees for 10 to 12 hours. I do this by repeating the "clean" cycle on my KitchenAid electric range. It's a long slog, but the satisfaction of making your own bricks is indescribable. Plus, you can add colors for endless varieties!
Yes, these machines are truly versatile. Just think of the possibilities! Buy two today, one for food, one for your favorite projects!
Customer Review: A bit disappointed. Summary: 3 Stars
I bought a Sunbeam Heritage stand mixer and was appalled at what poor quality it was. I lost all respect for Sunbeam manufacture.
The Kitchenaid is obviously much better quality, but I'm put off at its design. I suspect that much of the hype about Kitchenaid relates to its fancy design and attractive appearance (designer colors etc.). On a practical level it hasn't measured up.
For instance: the beaters don't pull up enough of the cooking material. Scraping the bowl is much more awkward with Kitchenaid than with old fashioned wide, spinning bowls. One has to stop the motor, unlock the head, lift it up, detach the bowl, angle it out and then scrape. Afterwards reverse the process to get back to the beating. Interesting though the beater design is, it often doesn't do as good a mixing as the old variety.
The bowl is tall, which for when whipping cream or egg whites is desirable, but it's rather a tight fit to the machine making it difficult to add ingredients to. The plastic device that is supposed to be used for adding ingredients can't satisfactorily be used for certain things, like adding boiled sugar to whipped egg whites.
In general I find the design cumbersome I'm sorry to say.
