Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSM150PSWH Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, WhiteCustomer Review: Great Mixer, But Read The Maunal First! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this mixer as "refurbished," and saved some bucks. It comes with the burnished steel flat beater and dough hook, as opposed to the painted ones. I learned too late that only the painted attachments are dishwasher safe! Now the hook and beater are a dark mottled color. Still work fine, just needed to be well scrubbed to get the dark residue off. That'll teach me to read the manual first. One reviewer expressed disappointment in some gears of the mixer being nylon, and getting stripped out. My dealer told me that a number of the parts inside are "sacrificial," that is, small inexpensive parts are designed to fail before large expensive parts do. This is a good thing! Think of it the same way as the crumple zones in your car's body. They get crushed, so you don't. I've used the mixer to make bread, and it came out perfect. I made pancake batter this morning, and the flat beater mixed all the way down to the bottom of the bowl just as it is supposed to. If yours doesn't, use the adjuster screw. The splash guard is misnamed-- its main purpose is to give you a chute for adding material. Some splashing will still occur, but to be fair the manual says the splash guard "reduces" splashing, not eliminates it. A note on refurbished models; I was assured that they are demos and trade show displays, not warranty returns. No mixer that has been sold to a consumer will show up later as refurbished. I don't know what they do with the warranty returns. You'll have this mixer a long time, so get the model you really want and the color you can live with for 20+ years. I love mine, and my once-skeptical wife is now a believer too.
Customer Review: An heirloom in the making Summary: 5 Stars
My husband gave me my own KitchenAid Artisan mixer several years ago, but for years I had been using the Kitchen Aid stand mixer that was given to my mom and dad as a wedding gift in 1946. And, believe it or not, that almost 60 year old mixer still works and I sometimes use both of them at one time when I have a large amount of cooking to do. Even though I've had good service from our "heirloom" as I call it, I had always wanted my own that I could use as my own personal workhorse in the kitchen. If someone enjoys cooking and baking, these mixers are the best you can buy and are worth every penny. I've never found better equipment for making the cakes and frostings that I'm famous for in my family and I think I've covered the gamut of celebrations from birthday's to my son's groom's cake thanks to our Kitchen Aid mixers. And, let's not even talk about mashed potatoes and other yummy stuff. While it's often said that husbands shouldn't give kitchen items to their wives for gifts, a Kitchen Aid item in the cobalt blue (which goes with my kitchen) is for me an appreciated gift that is as decorative as it is practical. My cobalt blue mixer was the start of my own still growing collection of KitchenAid small appliance. The blender and mini-chopper are also excellent buys. Another thing I like about KitchenAid, is the appliances are made in the USA. And, if you need to talk to customer service (which I did only once and that was because of my own error, not a problem with the appliance,) you talk to someone in the US. No need to try to decipher accented English that inevitably leads to confusion and disappointing service. It's wonderful to see an American company keep its jobs at home.
Customer Review: at long last! Summary: 5 Stars
i dont have a lot of extra money so i couldnt justify buying this while i had a handmixer that worked.
needless to say, last saturday, my hand mixer finally beat the dust... meanwhile i did a little happy dance...
...and bought this.
i do a lot of cookies. that's my specialty.
the only gripe i had is maybe the bowl could be bigger so i could do my triple batches, but whatever. i cant afford a more expensive one just so it would have a bigger bowl.
i got to use it for the first time tonight on my oatmeal raisin. yeah a little noise, but not unexpected or scary. there was a little movement too, but again not unexpected considering how thick the mixture is.
i had to lift it every once in awhile to make sure that all the mixture was getting beat in but didnt really need to- everything got mixed very thoroughly; much easier than having to stand there with the hand mixer and fight with it.
i havent messed with the dough hook simply because i use a breadmaker for that, and i havent used the whip because i really never have needed that either.
i am looking forward to getting some of the attachments, especially the ice cream one and the meat grinder. we try to eat as "natural" as possible, and i am looking forward to doing ground chicken and other things.
i know its not an investment to enter into lightly, but its well worth the money because i know this will last me into my middle age.
i love the heft of this machine also. i am one that buys the most durable things i can; i have a sewing machine that was made in switzerland, and i can tell this is the same type of construction- all metal.
Customer Review: I'm putting it in my will Summary: 5 Stars
It's not just the creme de la creme of mixers, it's the only one you should ever own. If you're new to Kitchenaid, I know what you're thinking. "Gee, this is a really expensive mixer! Why would I want to pay this much when I can easily get one of a hundred other brand mixers for 50 bucks?" It's simple -- there is a reason why in every movie or television show containing a kitchen scene, you'll see a KitchenAid mixer somewhere. It's not just slick product placement. It's the simple fact that there is nothing, and I mean NO OTHER MIXER that even comes close to being of the quality and durability that even the most CASUAL user would need! For example: I discovered baking when I was 8 years old and would haul my mother's mixer out of the bottom cabinent on a regular basis to make some increasingly devine concoxion. This passion for baking continued the 10 additional years I lived at home. During that time, we went through three mixers (motors burnt out) and more than a dozen new pairs of beaters (a real pain to order). For the price of all of this, we could have easily bought a KitchenAid, which I did -- as my first kitchen item in my 1st apartment at 18. Now I'm 28, a KitchenAid owner for 10 years, and still on my original mixer and beaters! [grin] And . . . did I mention it mixes better and more thourough and it's easier to clean? Yep! What more could you want? PS, my grandmother willed me the one she owned for more than 40 years so now I have a black one and a white one. Both, I'm sure will last long enough to put in my own will.
Customer Review: Really Pleased! Summary: 5 Stars
My wonderful(but very old) Oster kitchen center recently met an untimely end (I nearly cried) and I really wasn't sure what mixer to purchase as the Oster was the only one I've ever had. Because of all the hype and great things I've heard about kitchenaid mixers, I thought I would give it a try. And I absolutely love it.
I didn't have to adjust the beater when I got it, but kitchenaid includes instructions for this in the manual (and other reviewers give instructions) if you find that the clearance between the bowl and the beater isn't correct. I have found that it mixes very well and I love the power it has. I can't comment on the dough hook as I don't use it to make bread dough; but the whisk and beater are very nice. I really like how sturdy it is, but as many people have said, it is quite heavy!!
I'm considering buying the beater with the scrapers on the side as that I think might be even better than the one that kitchenaid provides; it can be rather hard to scrape the edges of the bowl without removing the bowl from the base. Also, I've considered purchasing the glass bowl cuz I rather like to see how things are mixing throughout the bowl as well as being able to throw the bowl in the microwave to melt ingredients, etc. My last mixer had a glass bowl so I guess I'm just used to it.
All in all I really do love it, its such an excellent addition to my kitchen.
