Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSM150PSWH Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, White

Customer Review: Almost perfect...
Summary: 4 Stars

For my use the 5 quart size is important. 4.5 quarts would not do. I would even
prefer a 5.5 or a 6 quart version, but this is pretty close to perfect. I have only
one complaint, which is that the dough blade does not reach as far into the bowl as the
other blades. The dough blade mixes the dough, but often leaves some of the dry mixture
pooled in the bottom. I can not lower it, because then the other blades will contact
the bowl. I don't know if my experience is the exception, or typical. I would still
buy this appliance, though. It gets used a lot in my house. Here are the most common things
I use it for:

Bread doughs (10 minutes prep time)
Cookie doughs
Pie fillings
Cake batters

I've never used the front attachments (yet anyway) or the pour spout.

Customer Review: So easy for this novice!
Summary: 5 Stars

Wow - I've recently begun cooking and felt I had to have this mixer after burning out two hand mixers. It's now my new best friend. The first thing I tried was a "jar" cookie recipe where everything (eggs, butter, flour & chips) are all thrown together at once. It didn't even bat an eye - just mixed it all up like nobody's business.

I must confess it took some time to get used to locking the tilting head - when you don't the poor thing jumps and dances all over the counter. I couldn't believe something so simple made a huge difference.

It comes with a few recipes (I tried the chocolate pound cake - yum). Cleaning is a snap - I would like to get an extra bowl, though.

The only draw back is it's difficult to add ingredients while it's mixing. I haven't tried the pouring shield yet but I'm betting it will help.

Customer Review: Not happy with the bowl lift
Summary: 3 Stars

We got a refurbished one from Amazon. Didn't know that there were two options, bowl lift, and tilt head. I'd get the tilt head if I were to buy another one... We got the bowl lift one and it's a real headache to put it on and off. And to add more ingredients, it's a real hassle if you have it operating as there is very little room to work. The mixer is also kind of noisy, as the metal beater hits the metal bowl on the sides, but also, the beaters don't hit all the way to the bottom, so you have to be careful and make sure that the doe has been completely mixed. I was really looking forward to having my real KitchenAid Mixer, but sometimes, I just go with my little manual 7 speed one. But what is true is that it's super powerful, convenient and you can do other things as you have it on, as the mixer won't move!

Customer Review: This one was a "lemon"
Summary: 1 Stars

I was excited to own the Kitchen Aid Artisan Mixer. Several of my friends own this Kitchen Aid Mixer. Also, many of the Food Network cooks use this mixer. I used the mixer a few times the first year after I purchased it.
Due to an unfortunate situation, I didn't bake or use my Kitchen Aid Mixer from Feb. 2007 until Feb. 2008. The mixer sat idle. When I tried to use it this year, the motor would only work on high settings and then for only a few seconds. I contacted Kitchen Aid and they reminded me that my warranty is over. I explained the mixer was hardly used. It seems like I really got a bad product. Kitchen Aid states that they stand behind their products. They didn't do well with this one. I wish I hadn't thrown away my very old mixer of 30 plus years, made by another manufacturer. It still worked.

Customer Review: all you need.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great machine for those who want a mixer that tilts up and may not have enough room in the kitchen to hold one of the larger "epicurian" models. Previously to this model all the big iron in the kitchen aid line was of the taller, fixed head design.

This mixer has substantial power (325 watts) to mix large recipies or run the more power hungry attachments and a large enough bowl to mix almost any recipe a home cook will make. The tilt head comes highly recomended (see the Cooks Illustrated article on mixers, available on this website), it keeps the controls lower and makes access to the bowl easier.

My wife and I have made several large batches of bread dough and this machine handles it with ease. It takes all the work out of it and just leaves the yummy home baked bread in its place.
