Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSM150PSER Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer, Empire RedCustomer Review: Best Buy Summary: 5 Stars
I burned out my ~$50 hand mixer making Oat Meal Raisin cookies. I read reviews for all the brands; asked friends and relitives and still had mixed feelings as to which stand mixer was best for the money.
I decided to run a test.
I bought a Kitchen Aid Artisan ($300) and a Kenmore Elite ($260). I made a batch of cookies with each. The Kenmore is going back!
It wasn't the $40 delta that had me look at the Kenmore; it was because it had 400 Watts of power vs. the 325 of the Kitchen Aid. Also:
1. Kenmore had a 5 year warranty vs. 1 year with Kitchen Aid
2. Kenmore had a LED light under the housing to light the work area
3. Kenmore had 2 mixing bowls
4. Kenmore had 12 speeds vs. 10 with Kitchen Aid
I had watched a video review of the Kenmore and except for loudness, seemed great, had good ratings and I had a 20% discount coupon.
What I found was the Kitchen Aid:
1. mixed more completely and evenly
2. didn't leave mix on the sides of the bowl that had to be pushed down
3. had NO vibrations when the mix got thick
4. didn't even work up a sweat with the stiff batter
5. and made a lot less noise (not that I can hear it without my hearing aids in anyhow!).
So now I'm buying a stick on LED light.
Great mixer!
Customer Review: Absolutely love it!!!!!!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
Just received this a couple weeks ago. First, I must say that this is just beautiful. I wouldn't dare store it in the cupboard, I proudly display it on my counter. And it is so functional. I use it almost everyday. Very versatile and clean-up is a breeze. I made lemon bars the other day. First, I used the mixer to combine the crust ingredients, which by hand, is not easy to get the correct consistency. Once I got the crust in the oven it only took a minute to clean the bowl and paddle and mix the filling, which was ready and I still had 10 minutes to wait for the crust. This machine was intimidating to me at first. I was almost scared to use it, fearing that it would take me days to read the manual, figure out the parts, which accessory to use and what speed to use. The manual has an easy-to-read handy chart for each of these categories that outlines everything for you. I refer to it often.
I only have a couple minor negatives. First, even with the pouring shield on, some of the liquid still manages to come out the opening. I usually just cover that part of the shield with a piece of plastic wrap. And, secondly, and this is the big one - everything comes out perfect with this machine. Everything gets incorporated and comes out the perfect consisistency everytime, so I've gained about 5 lbs!!
Customer Review: Not as powerful as Accolade - but does the job Summary: 4 Stars
I have previously used an Accolade (the ex got it - ha ha ha) and recently decided to buy my own KitchenAide Mixer. I got a deal on this with the Amazon "Save $25 on $125" promo (that seems to be forever ongoing) AND a $25 rebate from the manufacturer (do an iternet search for rebates). Think I paid less than $125 for it.
It is perfect for making my homemade bird suet, cookie dough, mixing cakes, kneading bread etc.
The only drawback I can find is that the "better" Accolade item has a nifty handle that raises and lowers the mixer's head. I miss that. Also, this Artisan model doesn't have the holder arm device that the bowl rests on that you can raise and lower - instead the Artisan's mixing bowl kind of "screws/locks" onto the base - not as handy to remove, when your hands may be greasy from kitchen chores -- as you have to grip the handle of the mixing bowl and then use your other hand to steady the base -- so you can unscrew it.
Overall -- the Accolade is far better from a design point of view - but it IS also MUCH more expensive. I'll stick happily with this model and know that I took my "ex's favorite" chocolate chip cookie recipe written by his mother -- with me when I left - Ha! He may have got the mixer - but the "dough" is mine! Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!
Customer Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this mixer about a month ago. I've wanted one for years, but always talked myself out of it (too expensive, too big, etc.) After finding a great deal here on Amazon, I finally caved in and let me say, I'm glad I did. I love this mixer! I was worried I wouldn't use it very much, since I already have a very nice bread machine (a "Zo"). I find that I'm using it all the time though. It really is like having an extra pair of hands in the kitchen. Cookie dough is so much easier. I'm also making bread with it constantly. It's just so simple to throw the ingredients in the mixer and let it do all the kneading. I've been making fresh bread and bagels every week and it's been no hassle. It handles the dough very well and stays put. It's a big heavy machine. The only problem I was having with it was I was finding it very difficult to remove the bowl to clean it after I was done mixing something. My husband suggested rubbing some vaseline on the bottom edge and that has solved the problem completely. Now I can pop the bowl off with one hand. Anyway, if you've been wanting one of these and if you like to bake at all, do youself a favor and get one. You will be amazed at how much easier it will make your life. I only wish I'd gotten one years ago!
Customer Review: A Big But Great Mixer Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit that this mixer does take a lot of space on the limited counterspace that I have but there is no way that I wouldn't have on my counter. I'm willing to sacrifice the space on my counter for the power of this mixer. I especially love the grinder. My family likes to eat a lot of tacos made with chicken breast, however ground chicken is expensive and you don't always know what you're getting. With this machine we are able to purchase the boneless skinless chicken breasts and grind them ourselves. The only thing I would recommend if you choose to do this is to make sure that the pieces of meat aren't too big for it. I ended up accidentaly ran a peice of chicken that was too big and burnt up the motor in it.
My husband bought me a new one for Christmas, and when I told my parents about the problem. My dad told me to give him the machine that he would pay to have it fixed for my mother. When he called Kitchenaide, they just said they were going to ship him a new one. No problem. She couldn't have been happier, now we both have the mixer and it's great.
They are also very expensive, but this is a case that if you want quality, you have to pay for it and this machine is very much worth it.
