Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSC700GC 7-Quart Slow Cooker, Gloss Cinnamon RedCustomer Review: So Far So Good (Spoke Too Soon) Summary: 1 Stars
Took a chance on ordering this due to the high number of good comments I've seen, and the lack of anything else that seems comparable. There have been many complaints about cracking liners ... thus far we have not had that problem. We've used this about 4 times in the past month with great result ... my wife really enjoys it. She loves the timer and the different heat settings, and they were very easy to become familiar with. One negative comment from her, though, is that the liner is pretty heavy, which makes cleanup a little more difficult. But we cook in pretty big quantity so we needed to get this large unit. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of all the negative comments about liners breaking ... I still have my fingers crossed. Get one if you feel lucky!
Update: Well, not too very long after I wrote my initial review, our liner cracked. I called customer service at Kitchen Aid and the woman I spoke with actually tried to convince me she had never heard of this happening before. She went on to tell me she has the exact same model herself and uses it constantly and has never had any problems with the liner cracking. She attempted to convince me that if mine DID crack it was because I was using it incorrectly. She told me that you must always have liquid in the thing before you turn it on (seriously? Where is that info in the product literature? Besides, we always did.) Eventually she said she would send me a new liner. Got the new liner and guess what ... it cracked also. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!! You WILL have problems with it. How an outfit like Kitchen Aid can go on selling stuff like this is beyond me.
Customer Review: My crock cracked also. Summary: 1 Stars
I wish I'd found some reviews when I purchased mine. My original one I bought 3 years ago. The first insert cracked within a few uses, so Kitchenaid replaced it with no problem, which was nice. The replacement crock cracked last year(2008) in March, and again Kitchenaid gracefully replaced it. So a few weeks ago, I again heard that familiar high pitched "crack", then the hissing of my soup leaking into the heating unit.
Kitchenaid this time said they believed there might be a problem with the unit that was cracking the crock insert, so they actually sent me a replacement free of charge. Upon looking over the new unit, I noticed some glazing defects which may or may not have been a problem, but Kitchenaid replaced it anyway. Amazingly, the replacement that came was already cracked upon arrival (maybe a used one??)- the sametype of crack near the bottom edge of all my other crocks.
My replacement for that crock came today, but now I am reading these reviews online and I am pretty disgusted that this is a common problem, and they surely know it but aren't cautioning people - just handing out new crocks until someone's house burns down?!? Fortunately they have been great about replacing the crocks(and even my whole unit), so the customer service for me has been great. But like others here, I now feel like I don't want to use the cooker while I am gone, and why can't they fix this problem? My old rival crockpot never gave me a problem and I only ditched it when I broke the crock one day and learned they no longer had replacements for that model. So now what?
Customer Review: Extremely disappointed in this product Summary: 1 Stars
I was very excited to treat myself to this cooker, Stainless, less than a year ago. I cannot say just how disappointed I am today after my 3rd liner cracked on its first use. I have contacted KA each time and they have sent me the replacement liner quickly; I'll give them that. I did some epinions and other site research to see just how prevalent this issue was- it is quite common, in fact. I wish that I had seen that before buying this unit. Other than the crock liners cracking it is a great unit. I will warn, however, that you can get a 3rd degree burn from touching the metal band where the crock meets the unit. I know this from my daughter's bad experience. It gets hotter than a cookie sheet at 400 degrees. I am going to ask KA to replace the entire unit this time or let me exchange it for some mixer accessories. I believe strongly in buying quality tools for the kichen (I equate them to my hubby's wood working tools) but I would absolutely not recommend this particular KA product. They did admit that this had been a recurring problem but wouldn't go as far as telling me if they had corrected it or not. I say that they have not considering my 3 broken liners. By the way, all of mine cracked on the bottom, too and all in about the same place. At this point I am going to check out the All Clad which was recommended by America's Test Kitchen on PBS. That or I am going to buy a metal lined unit! Hope this helps.
Customer Review: It performs like a charm Summary: 5 Stars
Let me begin by saying that I have not had a single problem with this product.
I originally received it as a Christmas present for Christmas 2007. After the giver gave it to me, she told me she had read the bad reviews and had offered to return it for a different model. I figured I would give it a go. With this, she also gave me the wonderful cookbook named "Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook" (reviewed elsewhere).
I initially tried this product around the first week of February and it performed perfectly. Since that time, I use it at least twice a month and, over the summer, made barbeque ribs in it twice. No cracking or lid problems to report.
A few minor things however: I don't know if it is because of its size or output, but things tend to cook in it a bit faster than many recipes call for. However, this is not a huge problem. When it completes cooking, it automatically goes over to a "Warm" mode to keep everything hot. Also, I just cook everything with the Low setting.
Also, because of size, it is sometimes a bit awkward to clean the porcelain cooking bowl. However, nothing sticks to it and it cleans up quite quickly.
I especially like how the cord tucks in for easy storage.
As a serious cooking hobbyist, I like this product more and more with each use. I make everything in it from Beef Stew, to Ribs, to Corned Beef and it performs as advertised.
Customer Review: BEWARE!! - My crock cracked during 3rd use (Original Review June 5, 2007) Summary: 1 Stars
There's another offer on Amazon for this same slow cooker. That offer has a lot more reviews than this one here. My original review from 6/5/07:
After my experience, I looked up KitchenAid's website. There they have a forum and a special thread for those who have had their crocks crack. Some people are on their 3rd replacement and the crocks are cracking in the same place every time.
MY REVIEW:
I bought this KitchenAid slow cooker in black and I really had to talk myself into buying it because it was so expensive. I kept telling myself you get what you pay for. Well, tonight I want to cry because I had just started a pork roast to cook overnight. After leaving the kitchen, my husband and I both heard a loud pop. I went back and found my slow cooker leaking liquid all over the place. I took out the crock, turned it upside-down and found a winding crack all along the bottom.
I've only owned my KitchenAid slow cooker for about 2 weeks and the crack occurred during the third time I used it. At this point I don't know if I want a replacement slow cooker directly from KitchenAid or whether I want to return the slow cooker to Amazon for a refund. If I got a replacement, I would be nervous to leave it on overnight or when I leave home, which is the whole benefit of having a slow cooker. Worrying about your slow cooker that has a retail price of $150 doesn't seem like a very good value to me.
