Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KSB580NK Custom Metallic 5-Speed Blender, Brushed Nickel

Customer Review: Caviar Emptor, Blends easily, Breaks, easily...
Summary: 2 Stars

**general overview**

(yes, I know it is "caveat emptor"...if you would like to understand why, please read number 4 under my wordy detailed review.)

blends decent(leave bits sometimes chunks behind), crushes ice, holds high volume(good for small parties), good options and choices, nice looking, heavy, "AND" BREAKS EASILY...

(more detailed review)

When my favorite blender broke(Osterizer, heavy glass that shattered), I thought about getting another Osterizer blender. After searching high and low, I settled on this Kitchen Aid KSB580NK Blender because it was a bigger, made of durable plastic, and seemed to do a lot of what I wanted in a blender.

1) Weight and Size:
The plastic container part is light weight and comfortable to hold but its base is quite heavy(which I can understand because I am looking for a heavy duty blender that can crush ice. So its motor is hefty).

It IS big and it IS bulky and will take up quite an area on the counter top. If you place a sheet of 8-1/2 X 11 sheet of paper on the counter, that's about how much space it'll take up in that respect. Height-wise, it is about 14-1/2" long.

It IS heavy to be moving to and fro the storage area on a regular basis and we tried that the first month and gave up on it, we simply leave it on the counter and only store it away when we have company (and finding a storage space for it isn't exactly a cake walk either).

The blender can hold a lot of volume so if you were making margaritas for about 6 people, it can do the job as far as volumes go.

2) Looks and Aesthetics:

If someone were looking for a small/unnoticeable appliance that they don't want to store away each time and to just let it sit on the counter, this WILL stand out.

It IS a nice looking, however, and if one has a steel/black/onyx theme going, this would "blend" (pardon the pun) in as far as looks go.

3) Functionality:

probably the most important aspect of a blender. The blender is very functional for the most part. It does pretty much everything it claims, from chopping ice to pureeing foods.

We make protein shakes everyday and it does a decent job of blending/pureeing our ingredients. It also crushes ice although it doesn't crush it as cleanly as some of the other blenders that I've used. It does leave some chunks and/or bits that are noticeable thus makes the drinks uneven and if one is a connoisseur of pureed drinks that don't like some bits in their drinks, this blender gets a B- in that department.

we are more "smooth" drinkers and like our drinks consistent and smoother and this blender doesn't deliever well in that respect.

When we puree bananas, it also leaves small bits of it around, enough to notice and making the bits and chunks not as pleasant to swallow.

I suspect this is the case for this blender because of its wide, 4-leaf clover like bottom that doesn't taper/funnel down like some of the other blenders that are more streamlined and cones toward the bottom. Our old Osterizer was more conic shaped and it always blended well and didn't leave chunks or bits when it pureed.

Other than that,it blends just about anything you can throw at it although I wouldn't recommend throwing an ipod in it...

4) Durability:

This is my BIGGEST (may we get BOLD and FONT SIZES choices HERE,please, AMAZON?) issue with this blender. The motor unit is well made, heavy and hefty and doesn't get heated when the blender goes into busy mode when we would have a party or get togethers.

But, the container is another story. The plastic component, while light and easy to handle, make the bottom gasket and wheels break easily. In the few months that we've had this blender, we've already had to replace a crack that happened between the screw/wheel/gasket at the bottom of the blender. And then even with the replacement, the gasket would just come loose after every 10-12 use.

I got tired of calling tech support so I just keep a wrench nearby and tighten it whenever it becomes loose.

Let me also state that there is a danger in this. When the gasket and screw/wheel became loose the first time, I was distracted by my kids and a phone call. I didn't know that it was broken.

I let it blend, got called away by my kids and then a phone call. When I went back to the kitchen later, there were liquids all over the counter and the floor and the some of the liquid seeped into the base unit and all the lights were flashing. And the blender was still leaking.

If I hadn't gotten back in time to unplug it, it might have created some sort of kitchen fire.

After the replacement, I would keep a close eye on it each time and whenever it would show signs of leaking through, I'd take out the wrench and tighten the gasket/screw/wheel.

This reason alone makes me drop the ratings on this blender from a 4 to 2.

5) Odds and Ends:

I blend peanut butter, strawberries, blueberries, protein powders, milk, wheat germ on daily basis.

This blender does leave residues of the powder, so after a few seconds, I'd have to take a spatula(silicone works best) and scrape off the unblended powder to incorporate it back. It also leaves a greasy film when using oily products such as peanut butter. And it does take a bit of effort to wash off.
In our old glass blender, that was not a problem because we'd simply fill it with water and a drop of detergent and blend it to clean it off. With the kitchen aid, the film doesn't come off using that method. We'd have to actually scrub it off to clean it.

as for loudness, I think all blenders that blend ice cubes are going to be loud no matter what, but it does make the SAME loud noise when it blends bananas and powders making it not so attractive when it comes to noise choice. It is hard to justify that it has options for crushing ice and options for stir and mix (along with other functions) only to have them all be equally loud. I'd like think that my blender is "smart" enough to know that when I use a mix function, I don't want it to serve as an alarm clock as well. Although there is a big plus with the big noise.

When you throw a party and somebody really annoying starts to yak at you non-stop. Ask them to join you to make some margaritas and ask them to chat up while you are making the drinks and watch them to try to be louder than the blender...LOL

All in all, this blender has turned out to be quite disappointing. We use many other Kitchen Aid products that we enjoy but feel Kitchen Aid failed in many aspects with this product. And for the price, there are definitely better alternatives out there...
