Customer Review: Disappointing how delicate these expensive machines are.

I was hesitant to buy one of these because of all of the bad reviews. But I read that they fixed the issue causing them to break so I bought my mixer July 2009 and it broke September of 2010. I was concerned because Kitchenaid has so little faith in the mixer that they say retails for $500 that they only warranty it for one year. Kitchenaid support was very helpful and they sent me a replacement for free.
While talking to support the first time I was told that these mixers aren't supposed to run for more then 5 minutes at a time or they can get too hot and cause it to break down quicker. She also suggested that if a recipe says to mix something for 9 minutes the KitchenAid mixer only needs to mix it for 3 minutes, apparently basic laws of physics don't apply to KA mixers. I think its pretty ridiculous that a $500 kitchen appliance needs to be treated so delicately.
I cannot suggest a KitchenAid mixer to anyone who wants to get into any sort of dough making. They are just not durable enough, looks like these mixers are limited to whip cream and pastries, in which case theres no reason to spend this much money on a mixer. A cheap mixer will handle whipped cream just fine. If you have the kitchen space you may be able to get a smaller used Hobart at your local restaurant supply store and mix all you want for years.

The Professional 600 TM has a powerful motor that is crafted for commercial-style performance, the direct drive, all-steel gear transmission delivers unyielding power for professional results. The mixer can effectively mix up to 14 cups of all-purpose flour per recipe and produce up to 8 pounds of mashed potatoes. The Soft Start mixing feature helps minimize ingredient splatter and flour puff with gentle acceleration to selected speed after start-up. Electronic Speed Sensor monitors operation to maintain precise mixer speed. Commercial-style motor protection automatically shuts off the mixer when overload is sensed to protect the motor. Durable all-steel gears provide reliable service.
