Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker AttachmentCustomer Review: Excellent attachment for KitchenAid Stand Mixer!! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't want to be redundant, so please refer to the previous review from "Not my real name" dated February 27, 2006. I agree with everything stated in that review. I have made quite a few batches since I received this and all came out great!
One way around the problem of no pour spout on the mixing bowl is to simply pour it into a large pre-cooled bowl that does have a spout then quickly pour it into your freezing containers. It helps to have a stiff spatula or paddle spoon to scoop it out of the mixing bowl. Just make sure they are plastic or wood, don't dare use metal!!
I found that by thoroughly cooling the mixture, almost to freezing, before making your batch allows it to firm up much faster - 12 to 15 minutes for a half filled bowl which will be almost full by the time it's done. I even made two batches in one day allowing the mixing bowl to refreeze for only six hours in between. Just be sure to pour, rinse, dry and put the bowl back in the freezer as fast as you can.
The only problem I've encountered is the space it takes up in my freezer - both for the mixing bowl and the containers of finished ice cream. But, now I finally have another great excuse to buy that chest freezer I've always wanted!!
Customer Review: My wife tried to murder me with this! Summary: 5 Stars
I think my wife is trying to murder me with this KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment! She bought this for me for Christmas along with the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Recipe book knowing full well that I would become obsessed with trying all of the recipes. I'm on the third batch (Cherry Garcia, Coffee Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip) and I can already feel my heart slowing down. I can hardly make it to the mailbox without becoming winded. Luckily I realized her dastardly plot before having an ice cream overdose induced myocardial infarction. She almost got away with it as nobody would have suspected her. The paramedics would have just thought I was another fat pig who overdosed on ice cream.
This is so easy to use you may also find yourself overstocked with fresh quarts of the best ice cream you ever tasted. Follow the recipes in Ben and Jerry's book and carefully follow the directions that come with the churn and you'll make great ice cream every time. As the other reviewers have mentioned, it is essential to allow the ice cream to "ripen" before serving. This is not a requirement that is unique to this churn by the way. This is necessary with other churns as well. So be patient, plan ahead, get creative, and enjoy.
Customer Review: Performs as advertised. Summary: 5 Stars
This product worked for me, and the bowl got cold enough even though my freezer is sort of iffy. I packed the bowl with ice while freezing it, and my ice cream sets to the proper consistency within 10-15 minutes. This shorter freezing time allows me to get a great consistency with the finished product, since it is already very cold when I transfer it to the freezer to harden.
For those reviewers who say the bowl is not cold enough, there are two possible reasons:
1. The ingredients are not cold enough when you pour them in. You must cool the ice cream mix in the refrigerator before using, never use lukewarm mix.
2. The freezing element in these types of bowls seems to degrade over time. You may have gotten a lemon. Some say that Kitchenaid was helpful in getting a replacement, some seem to have had worse experiences.
I use recipes from The Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments, which I also recommend. I also have a Cuisinart ICE-20, which is fine but I think the Kitchenaid freezer bowl gets colder. In the summertime I keep both freezer bowls in the freezer.
Customer Review: KitchenAid Ice Cream maker is ok for quick treat Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned a freezer-bowl type ice creamer in the past, and this one does seem to perform a little better. The freezer bowl begins to thaw pretty quickly after about 25 minutes, so your ice cream better be frozen by then. This means chilling all your liquid ingredients thoroughly before beginning. If you want to add fruit, freeze it first, then add during the last 5 minutes of freezing, or fold it in before you transfer the ice cream to a freezer container.
The bowl is quite large and takes a substantial amount of room in the freezer, especially if you only have one freezer. Freeze the bowl at least 24 hours before using.
The one thing I don't like about the cured, finished ice cream product, is the texture. I'm talking about after you have frozen the ice cream for several hours, and then serve it. Even though I used real light and heavy cream in my recipes, tried cooked recipes, and uncooked, still the final texture is still too grainy. When it is first made it is quite creamy, but is soft-serve and melts quickly. Good for a quick dessert though and will definitely impress your guests.
I like using the ice cream maker and will continue to perfect a recipe for the creamy hard ice cream.
Customer Review: Homemade Ice Cream is THE BEST! Summary: 5 Stars
I was dying for this ice cream maker and I finally got it on a Friday deal.
Anyway, I give this Ice Cream Maker Attachment a 5 star review because it is does everything it is supposed to.
You put the bowl in the freezer and let it freeze over night. Put the attachment on the mixer and the bowl, turn the mixer on, pour the mix in and let it churn on speed 1 for 15-20 mins.
It comes with an operator's manual with recipes for basic Ice Cream and Sorbets. I used this several times and I made a few different variations.
So far, I have made Oreo, Root Beer Float flavored (my own recipe), Strawberry and Blackberry Ice Cream. Strawberry was my favorite so far. I also made Raspberry Sorbet and it was to die for.
The only way you could screw this up is if you don't follow the directions by geting the batter or bowl cold enough. I also bought the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Book to go a long with my mixer.
I think it is a great investment and if you love homemade ice cream and using your KitchenAid mixer, you should get it.
There are quite a few videos on YouTube of people making ice cream using their mixer and attachment.
