Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KHM5DH 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer, WhiteCustomer Review: This sturdy hand mixer will always have a spot in my kitchen Summary: 5 Stars
My mother, if she were still alive, could probably tell you about the number of "bargain" electric mixers I destroyed between elementary school and the middle of college. I don't remember all of them; I just remember that there were a LOT of them, and that none of them were built to withstand peanut butter cookie dough or gingerbread cookie dough, and quite a number of them couldn't manage even softer doughs.
In the middle of college, Mom bought an early version of this mixer, and it survived me (and the rest of the family) for years. When I got married a few years later, I told my fiancee this: "We MUST have a KitchenAid mixer -- unless you really WANT to buy a new "bargain" every few months."
Many years later, I still have that mixer; since getting my KitchenAid stand mixer, I haven't used this one as much, but I do pull it out occasionally, and it's in great shape. If it ever dies, I'll buy another one.
The reasons that this mixer works better than the "bargains" are:
1) The beaters are thin (but strong) wires, so they present a smaller surface area and therefore less friction to the dough. (They're also easier to clean.)
2) It has a strong motor (but not a noisy one!) that can go through anything!
A word of caution: Mom's mixer outlived her, but it didn't live forever. Note (and tell the spouse and kids) that there is a "left" and a "right" beater. It's easy to tell which is which, if you look at the bottom of the mixer, and the beaters won't go into the wrong hole easily (but they can be forced).
One day someone jammed the beaters in "backwards" and flipped it on high speed, to the sound of the motor straining and the beaters locking and twisting. Amazingly, it didn't die immediately, but it was never the same after that, and eventually quit working.
