Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KHB100OB Hand Blender, Onyx BlackCustomer Review: Pure KitchenAid Quality Summary: 5 Stars
Love, love, love this KitchenAid hand blender!
At it's heart, it's a hand blender. It spins a blade. So, what's so special about this?
While some KitchenAid products have strayed away from the legendary KitchenAid quality of years ago (mostly after the company was acquired by Whirlpool), this blender is a reminder of what the company can do.
I've owned several competing products over the past couple of decades - some cheaper, some more expensive. And while it's true that this is simply another hand blender, aside from the obvious quality, what sets this one apart for me is:
1). The bottom half of the blender easily detaches for proper cleaning. No more worrying about immersion of the motor.
2). A more permenantly attached blade. No need for gimmicky "multi-blade" attachments on these blenders. The extra blades just end up getting lost over time anyhow.
3). Multi-speeds. No, MANY-speeds. I've had blenders with low/high speeds, and even low/med/high speeds, but this beauty allows for a 1-9 speed selection - always providing the right speed for the job.
Customer Review: Fantastic hand blender! Summary: 5 Stars
I was actually looking for a new hand blender and snapped up this KitchenAid blender when it showed up on sale. It arrived today and I decided to use it while preparing dinner. First I took a carrot, a bit of celery, onion, spices, basil, some V8 juice and a few tomatoes to make a simple and fresh soup. Then I cleaned the blender and and mixed up a quick salad dressing and for dessert I made a thick and creamy vanilla milkshake. I was impressed how smooth the soup was and I was barely using the blender at half power!
This thing is big. I'm a big guy and it doesn't bother me at all but I can see how some people may feel some discomfort if they are holding this 2 pound blender at shoulder length for extended periods of time. The mixing beaker is also pretty big at 32 ounces. I appreciate this as it gives you room for a lot of ingredients without your food splattering everywhere. Despite the unit's size, it's actually easy to store. It does break down into two pieces.
I wholeheartedly recommend this blender to anyone, especially if it shows up as a gold box special again. Even at $50, this is a great kitchen mixer.
Customer Review: What a shame!! Summary: 1 Stars
I have just used my KitcheAid hand blender for the second time to blend some soup having purchased it a couple of weeks ago. Whilst eating it, I realized there were some odd pieces floating in it! I picked them out thinking that, somehow, they were from a can of tomatoes I'd used. I looked at the pieces more closely and determined that they looked like pieces of plastic. Afterwards, whilst I was cleaning the hand blender, I noticed that there was a plastic disc above the cutting blades, which had pieces missing from it! When I examined the blender more closely, each time I pushed the plastic disc up, it just kept falling down on the blade area each time. I'm pretty disappointed with this product. No way should this have happened. What if someone had used it to blend a meal for a young child or baby and not noticed that pieces had broken off the disc - one or two of them were quite large and could easily cause a child to choke. The first time I used it, I thought it did a great job of blending but after this experience I can't give the product a rating as it is clearly badly designed. I am returning it for a full refund.
Customer Review: make SMOOTHIES if .., Summary: 5 Stars
If you start processing your smoothie with the liquids first and gradually add small size frozen or fresh fruits and CRUSHED icy bits (not big cubes), you can make a delicious smoothie drink real quick. I like to add 1-2 T ground flax seeds to mine but you don't have to. Here is a recipe I like.
Start with 1 banana, 2 oz yogurt = (about 1/3 of a personal size yogurt cup), 2T fz OJ concentrate, 1/2 C ice water, then start adding 1/2 C blueberries, 1/2 C mixed berries OR raspberries, (cut up the lg strawberries first with a knife IF they are frozen), add crushed ice chips. Add flax meal last (or omit).
Let this powerful blender do the work at it's own pace. Don't force it down hard to chop everything immediately, be patient and start slowly. I put ice cubes in a sandwich bag and turn my hammer sideways and smash them into crushed ice to add to the smoothie (FUN). If your fruits are frozen, then you don't even need the ice.
This recipe tastes better than the smoothies I was paying $5.oo ea for at the mall! This blender works wonderfully for soups too.
Customer Review: I have the similar white model but need a new one.... Summary: 4 Stars
I am still using the white plastic version of this blender...I got the full kit (whisk, etc.) via rewards points a couple of years ago.
It is still working perfectly...however, the plastic covering the cord wires has split and I the wires are exposed. I put some electrical tape on, but it really isn't working that well anymore, so it's time to replace the unit, just to keep safe.
Overall I have loved my old white version, but I would prefer the darker color...the white is OK, but since it's well used there is some slight staining.
The power is still there after about 2 years of daily use. I use it to mix up a supplement I have to take...powder, which which blend with fruit and water...sort of like a smoothie. It's not especially taxing on the unit.
I could have gotten a Viking with rewards points, but the reviews aren't that good for that unit. So, I'd prefer to buy the Kitchen Aid because I've been very happy with it overall...except for the cord.
