Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KHB100OB Hand Blender, Onyx BlackCustomer Review: Oh the possibilities! Summary: 5 Stars
Before I bought this I was going through one bad blender after another wishing I didn't have to clean them every time I thought it would be a good idea to use them.
Then this beauty of a product entered my house and we all lived happily ever after... Well, as long as it had to do with blending! This has made it so easy to blend things without any extra mess. If I have a pot of soup and randomly decide I'd rather have a creamy soup all I have to do is plug in my hand blender and stick it in my (still hot on the stove) pot and blend up my soup. If I want fluffy snow ice cream all I have to do is put my snow and flavorings in a bowl and stick my blender in. I don't have to worry about the amount i'm blending because I can use any bowl.
The plastic cup it comes with is the perfect size for frozen fruit smoothies for me and it's so handy to have a lid for that.
And cleaning couldn't be easier. I just "blend" my soapy dish water and occasionally use a rag to clean it out for more stubborn concoctions. I think the key to cleaning it is to do it right away - but that's my general theory for all dishes.
(I did try the frosting recipe in the book that comes with it and decided frosting was better left to the mixer.)
Customer Review: Kitchen Aid Immersion Blender KHB100 Summary: 4 Stars
I first purchased this after watching a demo of it. The lady told me you could make peanut butter with it. That's what caught my attention and made me decide to purchase it. I like Adams and it's hard on my wrists to stir it sometimes. So I used this blender to stir my Adam's...it burned up the motor. So I got another one and was more careful, only advancing an inch at a time and being careful not to overtax it. I burned up that motor. Being a glutton for punishment, I bought another one...no more stirring peanut butter, I switched brands so I wouldn't have to stir. I burned up that motor. I don't know how I did that, really, after all, I gave up on the peanut butter. But never saying die, I purchased another one, and stupid me, am about to purchase one for my son. I like this blender, I don't know why...I suppose that isn't selling you on purchasing one, but hey, I'm being honest here. It's great at stirring eggs and milk for french toast. I purchased the longer attachments so I can make milkshakes, although I haven't tried them out yet. I thought it'd be handy for fitting into narrow openings, you can't do that with a regular mixer...but I don't actually know what you'd really use it for. The peanut butter idea sounded good...don't try it.
Customer Review: This beast works very well, but storage?? Summary: 5 Stars
I have used my "boat motor" 3 times so far, each time to blend soups. It does the job very well and does it very quickly. This is another winner from KitchenAid - small kitchen appliances that do the job and do it very well.
I gave a "star rating" of 5, due to the quality, power, and ability to do the task. My favorite "immersion blender trick" is to fill the container (included) half full of water, set the blender on the lowest speed, immerse in the jar, and turn it on. You can lift the blender and the vaccuum created will lift the container and keep it stuck to the bottom of the blender. Lots of power!
Being my first immersion blender, maybe it is going to take me some time to adjust to it, but my two unanswered issues are both with storage. I could stash it in a drawer, but I have no available drawer space. So I stand it up, in the beaker that came with it, in a cabinet. Every time I reach into the cabinet I hit the motor or power cord and the blender tips over onto the floor. First, what can I do with the cord other than wrap it around the body? And when put away, how do I keep it from falling over?
All in all, a wonderful product. I just can't come up with a storage solution that works for me.
Customer Review: Sweet Summary: 5 Stars
The last time I used a "stick blender" was back in the 80s when the Braun version first hit the consumer market and the infomercials started pitching that "Venturri Ring" garbage on TV. I almost never used my Braun as it was essentially worthless for most tasks, but I've seen so many people recommend similar looking gadgets recently I couldn't resist nabbing this one when it was on sale for $29.
Suffice to say, this thing has a lot more power than the models of 20 years ago, and it's built like a tank to boot. I haven't had a reason to turn it up past 5 on the speed dial so far, as even that is just way too much power for most tasks.
My one gripe is that there's no way to lock the power button down while in use. I understand that this is probably for safety reasons, but it takes quite a bit of force to trip the switch, and my wrist starts getting tired pretty quickly. I can't imagine what anyone with tendonitis or arthritis would go through trying to use this thing. I also have no clue why they bothered throwing in the cheap little plastic cup thing. Anyone who's in the market for an immersion blender probably already has some kind of vessel to do their blending in, but there it is.
Customer Review: Amazon saved it... Summary: 3 Stars
My first unit burned out after two uses... The only reason I gave it a second shot was because Amazon replaced the original with no hassle. Now, if the replacement continues to function, I'll be pleased with the purchase. The ergonomics are nice - the unit has some heft to it, and it fits well in my hand. Cooks with smaller hands might find it less comfortable. I don't really see the need for the range of speeds, as all the blending I've done has come out quite well on the lowest speed. Besides, higher speeds seem to result in more froth, flung food, and cavitation (requiring you to stop the unit, withdraw it from the food to eliminate air bubbles, and then reinsert...). The cord can be irritating at times, as it is rather stiff, and seems to remember that it was folded and twist-tied for a large part of it's life. A more flexible cord, or even cordless model would be a nice improvement in this area.
June 1, 2008 Update:
I've now had this hand blender for over a year, and the replacement Amazon sent has functioned admirably. The cord is still stiff, but other than that, I am VERY pleased with it. I'd definitely buy it again.
