Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KHB100ER Hand Blender, Empire Red

Customer Review: essential kitchen tool
Summary: 5 Stars

Hand immersion blenders can be an essential tool if it is made right. If it is easy to use, easy to clean and powerful it will quickly become your favorite thing to use in your kitchen. This IS just such essential kitchen tool!!! Since the blender part is detachable it makes it very easy to clean. And, the actual blender "stick" is not made of plastic it feels sturdy enough to do many tasks...however, not quite enough to crush ice. Frozen fruit in a smoothie is a snap...just do not overload! There is heft in the immersion blender so many tasks can be tackled!

The only bad thing is the placement of the speed adjustments is on top of the stick so when you are adding stuff and need to adjust the speed you need to stop and use both hands...

Customer Review: Has the model changed? Can you use this to mix cake batter?
Summary: 4 Stars

It seems since this item was first reviewed back in 2007 (the featured **** review) that the model has changed. There are now 7 speeds as opposed to two? Has the issue with the food getting up into the cylinder been resolved, and it can be cleaned fully now with no food residue? Also is this unit too powerful for cake batters and other kinds of batters, such as cookies, bundt cakes, so-called "quick breads," waffles, things you don't want to drag out the hand or standing mixer for? Or is that over kill? Seems like this is a powerful mixer, is it TOO powerful for light cake batters? I'm picturing batter all over the ceiling. Any comments much appreciated before I spend the money on this. ;o)

Customer Review: Not just a gadget
Summary: 5 Stars

When I bought one of these I wasn't sure if I would really use it. I don't use it all that frequently but when I do, it's a great tool. You can't beat it for making a cream of something or other soup, or for beating something that is threatening to be lumpy. I also have to pass along a good word about KitchenAid. After I'd had mine maybe 18 months a little piece of the "arm" that holds the blade came loose that made it unusable. I emailed the company to ask for suggestions and they immediately sent me a new arm, right away, no shipping charge, no interrogation, and they even got the color right. Since then when I've replaced appliances I've tried to replace them with KitchenAid.

Customer Review: Not Industrial, but not exactly lightweight blender
Summary: 3 Stars

This hand blender cannot, I repeat, cannot handle heavy-duty jobs that has peanut butter consistency. I have burnt out the motor twice instantly. I did pulses 1-3 seconds over several seconds, and it still burns out. The KitchenAid Warranty Services has been great, and replaced the blender twice. I stayed away from these "peanut butter consistency" stuff after 3rd time, and used it to mix my powder-mix drinks. It's overkill for blending drinks, and useless for making real sauces, various butter, etc. I think KitchenAid engineers designed this blender with high velocity, low power to create illusion that it's "powerful" blender...it goes fast and goes quickly. Not recommended...

Customer Review: powerful
Summary: 4 Stars

I like that it has 10 speeds. It's very powerful, I don't think I'd ever need to set up above 6 or 7, I usually use 1-5. The only complaint is a minor one, and that is that the plastic guard piece behind the blade has a very slight gap between it and the metal, so it takes a little more care than just swishing it with water in order to clean it thoroughly. I also find that the power cord gets in the way sometimes. I wish it stuck out of the top of the immersion blender. Who knows, maybe if it did, I wouldn't like that either. This is my first immersion blender. Buy this immersion blender if you're looking for something powerful and that has variable speeds.
