Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KHB100ER Hand Blender, Empire Red

Customer Review: Powerful, easy to use immersion blender
Summary: 5 Stars

This blender is extremely powerful. There are nine power levels, and anything above 7 needs two hands to control the machine. It makes very quick work of soups and sauces, although like all hand held immersion blenders, the final product is not as smooth as you would get with a regular blender.

The blender is much larger than I expected: it's about 17 inches long when assembled, and weighs nearly 2 pounds. It appears to be very robust and well-made, although the clips that hold the blade attachment to the handle are small and plastic -- that may be a long term durability issue. The speed dial and on/off switch are well covered so that the handle is very easy to keep clean. The blade attachment is easily cleaned by rinsing under the tap. There is no cord storage: I wrap the cord around the handle and keep it in the mixing jar.

A couple of comments on usage:
1. If you're making soup, start off slowly on a low power until the veggies are pureed, then increase the speed to liquefy.
2. Make sure that whatever you're blending is at least a couple of inches deep - otherwise the blender will splatter the food all over the place

Customer Review: handy
Summary: 4 Stars

I had one of these that had a battery and the recharger hung on the wall with its attachments. I loved it, it was light and convenient. It finally broke and they don't make them that way anymore.
This whips up a storm, its detachable head cleans perfectly in the dishwasher with no fuss. It has tremendous power and its design sucks the food into the blade and a circular motion is set up for efficient blending. It does not whip cream, you need a whisk or beater for that. Instead it would turn cream to butter. It is kind of heavy but stands up on its own without tipping over. The beaker is the perfect container. It is kind of tall and the cord has so much memory that it takes up too much space on the shelf over my sink where I keep it. There is no safety. At all. If it were plugged in and you accidently hit the switch while your finger were in the blade, they would be chopped up. Because of this, it should never be stored plugged in. But overall, I do like it and I use it often. If I had small children, I would not have this in the house. And if I were teaching a child to cook, I would never, ever use it.

This was given to me as a gift, and I absolutly love it.......It has plenty of power and with variable speeds, it will make short work out of any job you may have for it. It is attractive, easy to use and will stand on its own......Clean up is so easy since the blade assembly will detach and can go in the dishwasher........the body of the blender wipes down easy........I don't use it everyday like some other reviewers, but when I do have the need, I am soooo glad I have it......It is well worth the money (as with most kitchenaid appliances).....AS FOR SAFETY FEATURES......since it doesn't have a traditional on/off button(you have to press the power button the whole time you are using it)it will not run accidently........you have to consciencly hold the button to operate it......It is a little heavy, but the weight is balanced very well, so I dont find it difficult to use........Anyone who does have a problem with this appliance either has very small hands or is using out of it's intended capacity.....buy it, you'll love it.

Customer Review: Great, but no "ON" button, just "pulse"
Summary: 4 Stars

I love handblenders. I have this one and its attachments, and I use it pretty regularly. I have two complaints: 1) the powercord is thick, cumbersome, and hard to keep out of one's way. I had a cordless unit from a different manufacturer before, and I must say--the extra power here is nice, but I'm not 100% convinced the hassle of the cord is really worth that extra umph very often. 2) and here's the kicker--there's no actual "on" switch. You've got to hold it on the whole time. I really wanted to give one to my mom for Xmas, but she simply doesn't have the hand-strength any longer to make use of this unit. It takes me two hands to keep it held "on," and my hands cramp up when I've got something that I need to blend for a sustained amount of time. That said, this is a lovely unit (I adore the red color), and I get lots of use out of it. I just would have liked a chance to think about those two issues before I bought it (about a year ago), and certainly before I gave it for a gift.

Customer Review: Duravle? Time Will Tell. Powerful? Yes!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a powerful model. It feels like it should last a long time (I have burned out two cheap ones).

I own a Brun hand blender, but its blades are not sharp enough to puree ice like this Kitchen Aid model. THe Kitchen Aid is everything I hoped for in that department, and more. It has 9 power levels and I think the dual power button is straight and pulse. But if you hold it in there long enough, they all puree. Watch your fingers!

Of course I did not read the instructions (beyond the safety notices); nobody does. So it's nice to have something you can pull out of the box and blam away with. My favorite is frozen bananas and soy milk, which makes a great smoothie or if thicker it's just like ice cream. I add toasted coconut or almonds.

It makes mayonnaise really fast, and Hummus? Yummus!

If you want a no-brainer, this is your model. And I bought the RED, which I got much cheaper than the white or black!
