Customer Review: Quality Power Durable design - esp the bottom

06-22-2010: I purchased this unit a few days ago at the Target store in Poway, ca (even though the website claims it is not available in stores). It works great but has a few draw backs.
I've been using a Hamilton Beach "drink mixer" daily to make my protein shake for the last 9 years. The Hamilton mixer always worked well but several problems developed with the bottom half (the blade). The twist off groves broke, the shaft on the blade would get food stuck in it etc. The lesson I learned is that the motor will probably never fail (unless it is overheated or abused) but bottom half is the part most likely to fail.
PROS:
The KitchenAid gives you a solid high quality mixing blade and nice snap-on ejector that will probably last a lifetime. It works by pushing both buttons which will eject AND separate the bottom half. This directly addresses the weakest link. It is very powerful. I use it in the lowest setting for my drinks because otherwise it tends to spill. Bottom is more efficient than my old mixer at churning the mix - my shakes come out creamy vs lumpy and I don't have to go up and to get the lumps out. I just tilt it a little and it circulates and blends the entire drink.
CONS:
It is very tall which makes it a little awkward to use (I'm 5-10). For drink mixing it is way over powered making the unit larger, bulkier, heavier than it would otherwise be. The upside is it can be used for heavier tasks like potatoes, etc. It is very thick - most women would have trouble with the thickness, height and weight. It is intended that you hold on near the top where it is thinner - so women don't give up on this otherwise great quality and versatile product. Once you place it in the cup it doesn't seem as tall. The push button separator causes my drink to spill as it jerks it as I separate it. I think it will break in and get smoother overtime (I also use a glass jar which is much smaller than the plastic mixing cup).
TIP: I use a glass peanut butter jar - I like glass more than plastic because it never scratches and I get better mixing action because the container more closely matches the size of my drink. I never unplug the unit. I just separate the bottom, wash it, and toss it in the dish rack to dry. In general these mixers are way better than a blender because all you have to clean is the removable base and the cup - compared to dissembling a blender! If you blend things a lot buy this unit. If you are not sure there are plenty of $20 units for you to use before committing to this excellent unit as it would be a shame for this to be left sitting in a drawer with other unused appliances.
