Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KFP740CR 9-Cup Food Processor with 4-Cup Mini Bowl, ChromeCustomer Review: The Real Dirt Summary: 1 Stars
I listened to all these reviewers and now I regret it. I am a very heavy user of my food processor and I've been through a few. 1) Yes, the machine weighs a lot and that gives one the impression it is a "heavy duty" machine. In reality, the plastic parts are quite inferior to brands I've used in the past and I often feel like the plastic parts on the lid are about to break when I twist it off to stop the machine and then twist it back on again, 2) I have to spend twice as much time "forcing" the food into the blades by hand than any other processor I've ever used. This is a sign of poor engineering design, 3) Yes, the lid does overlap the outer container to prevent spills on the outer rim, but this is more than negatively compensated for when you consider the short inner stem encourages an awful mess around the outer stem and up into the blade chamber...all this equals extra cleaning time and special cleaning tools, 4) the overlapping lid, while preventing spills during prossessing, encourages a huge mess when you try to take the lid off. Dry blends get stuck in the rim and are jetisuned all over your counter when you attempt to take off the lid, 5) The tiny hole in the feed tube is too large to do what it is intended to do, drip oil into the basket slowly enough to make mayonaise. You may as well just poor it in by hand because you'll never get a decent mayonaise using this feature. I gave my 20 year old Hamilton Beach Food Processor to my daughter-in-law when I got this one and now I wish I had it back!
Customer Review: Powerful Processor Summary: 5 Stars
This is not specified anywhere, but all KitchenAid KFP7xx machines are 700 Watts. The 9 cup capacity with 700 watts makes a great combination - especially with the minibowl for smaller capacities. This is also a great looking machine with chrome to go with stainless kitchen appliances. The smooth edges make it easy to clean and all detachable parts go in the dishwasher with no problem - and so far, no rusting.
I blew up two other 900W blenders (actually just blew the fuse) trying to make manna bread (chopping up sprouted wheat berries). Both blenders and my hamilton beach processor could only minimally grind the wheat. But the KFP740 ground it to a very fine dough very quickly - perfect!
I tried the dough blade to make cookies - it didn't work so well. The stand mixers do a much better job of this. I will have to try bread dough with it and report back on how it works.
The only other negative is a problem many food processors have - including Cuisinart: the maximum liquid level is much lower than the processor capacity. This one measures just over 2 cups on the large bowl(there is actually a mark on the side of the bowl). However, if your liquid is pretty thick and you leave the chopper in place, it won't spill out when you exceed 2 cups. Also, get this - the minibowl has over 3 cup max liquid capacity. That's because the inside tube goes up much higher.
Overall, this is the most versatile, practical, powerful and best looking processor I could find for under $200.
Customer Review: Excellent unit, great price Summary: 5 Stars
After reading Amazon reviews (and other online reviews) I selected this unit. I work in a small professional kitchen and needed a good quality processor without the upper price tag that a Cuisinart/Robot Coupe would have.
The first impression of the machine was good-very heavy base motor and the bowl and accessories had the same heavy/durable feel that most of the Cuisinarts/Robot Coupes have. Within the time I've had it, I have grated hard and soft cheeses, made fish mousses, chopped chocolate, ground nuts, and pureed vegetables (among other tasks). The motor is well up to the tasks at hand and doesn't appear to slow at all under load and gives every indication of being durable.
After a discount of $25 I paid $123 for this unit and it is well worth it. I believe that this unit would be a great addition to any kitchen without spending a lot of money.
It also is easy to clean; and looks nice sitting on the counter, if that's of any value to you.
Edited 3 years later (8/09):
3 years of hard use and still going strong. I should add that I clean the blade/attachments by hand to help keep them sharp; but I put the bowl/lid through the dish machine (not absolutely necessary, but I treat them as I do my knives-and you should never put a knife through a dish machine). Someone told me a year ago this is the unit Alton Brown uses and recommends on his Food Network Show Good Eats, if that is of any value to you as a recommendation.
Customer Review: I LOVE this food processor! Summary: 5 Stars
OK, I have to admit, my last food processor purchase was in the late eighties. So, I can't compare this to more recent models of processors. BUT, I can say this machine is SUPER easy to use, SUPER easy to clean, and, be prepared, it is VERY heavy. Not too heavy that I can't lift it, but all parts seem quite "substantial"
I'm mostly using the large bowl, I've used the small bowl once for chopping up a small piece of parmeasan. I used the chopping blade instead of a shredder blade and got a great "grated" style parmeason.
No gripes, I LOVE this processor :)
***UPDATE****October 4, 2008 a year and GOING STRONG!
I have learned to make and LOVE new recipes with this processor.
It doesn't matter it is heavy, I never put it away!!!
I've learned to make a quick hummus with canned chick peas, and a SUPER EASY salsa/bean dip.... OOOH and the MANY toppings I've created for casseroles...And desserts...AND, I even learned to make dough in it, and make fresh dog biscuits for my dogs. I use it to grind up the ingredients, and then add my natural supplements and flour. NOW, if it only rolled the dog biscuit pastry out for me.. LOL
This gets used EVERYDAY. ALL PARTS still look new, although the plastic on the bowl is scratched now, it just proves how often this machine gets used. The exterior still shines and looks new.
LOVE IT, and LOVE IT MORE every day!!!
Customer Review: Major design flaw Summary: 3 Stars
I have had this processor for over two years now. I also cook a lot and use this machine often. The small bowl inside is nice when I have small amount of wet or dry ingredients to process. The bigger bowl stays clean and I don't have as much mess to clean up. That is the one thing I actually like about the machine. But I have a MAJOR complaint about the big bowl. It CLAIMS a 9 cup capacity, but heaven forbid that you are processing something that has a fair amount of liquid in it. If there is more than 2 cups of liquid, it spills out the bottom of the bowl because the lip for the blade is less than two inches tall. Several times, I have misjudged how much liquid is in something and find leakage all over my counter. Now, when this is happening, I'm trying to hurry up and lift the bowl of the processor off without pulling the blade completely off. Taking the blade off would make a huge mess in this situation. But there is nearly no way around it, because as you try to remove the bowl with the blade inside, it sticks! SO FRUSTRATING! Just tonight, I had to put the entire processor in a large bowl before I lost half the contents of the coconut milk I was trying to make. I HATE that I paid this much money for a machine that had this bad of a design flaw. Oh....and after having the processor for a year or so, the plastic handle broke on the inside. It is being held together with DUCK tape.
