Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid KFP740CR 9-Cup Food Processor with 4-Cup Mini Bowl, ChromeCustomer Review: Great machine, no problems after a year of hard use Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this machine to use for making baby food, slaw and smoothies. We've had it for well over a year.
I've been very pleased with this product, it functions wonderfully and doesn't "dance" around the counter when on like less-expensive models. It's also quieter than other food processors I've had. It comes with a good set of attachments and blades and a box designed to hold them all. I've used the small inner bowl on occasion when making small meaty batches of baby food out of leftovers, and I find it works well. If a roast turns out a little tougher than I had hoped, it can cream leftovers into baby food in a snap (I do cut it up a bit first, of course.)
It does have trouble with very large frozen fruit directly from the freezer -- that I usually have to cut once or twice or run in the microwave for 15-30 seconds.
Some people have commented that the tube that holds the blade is too low for holding much liquid; I haven't found this to be the case. So long as you don't try to remove the blade before pouring the contents -- yes you have to hold it in with your finger while pouring -- it works great for me. No spills.
However, there is a difference between a food processor and a blender, and you shouldn't hesitate to choose the one best suited for the job at hand. You need to keep runny liquids in the lower half of the processor bowl but I haven't ever had a food processor where this wasn't the case. I'd suggest that people use a food processor for solid to semi-liquid applications (soup and smoothies are fine) and use a blender for thinner, runnier liquids if needed in more than say three- or four-cup quantities.
But it's lasting beautifully considering how often we use it. I'm pleased with this purchase.
Customer Review: runs great Summary: 5 Stars
I got this for myself and have been really happy with it. After 5 months of use, it still looks new. It is a good strong processor. It runs great, will chop everything I use it for. It is nice and heavy, so I leave it out on the counter, esp since it has a nice clean look to it. This is also convenient since I use it quite often. It is a good size, I wouldn't want it to be any smaller, and really I wouldn't even mind if it were a bit larger. The extra, smaller bowl is handy at times, but when it is used, both bowls end up needing washing since the smaller one goes over the larger bowl, so I don't really use the smaller one very often.
Because I want the bowl to stay nice and clear, I never put it into the dishwasher, so I can't really say if it would hold up under that. It is easy to wash by hand, but the blades are very sharp, so I wouldn't let kids wash those. I have used a Cuisinart, and the lid to this one seems so much easier to get on and off with less steps to lock the lid in place, while still remaining safe.
The only complaint I have is the center stem which holds the blade. It is too short, therefore it does not come up enough, so some liquids tend to leak through that. I try to not chop too much wet stuff at a time just to allow for that, but it is something to watch for. I make a lot of salsa and smoothies in this, so it is very obvious. Still, I like the rest of the processor well enough that I will work around that.
I would recommend this processor. Just don't fill it more than a couple of inches with liquid at a time. Also, the shipping was fast, and KitchenAid paid their rebate fairly quickly, unlike most rebates seem to be.
Customer Review: Improved design adds flaws Summary: 2 Stars
I have used a Braun (two - wore out the first one) for some 20 years or so. When I would browse in the stores the Cuisinart and Kitchen Aid had the intricate feed tube mechanism, which was a total turn-off - too hard to keep clean. So when I wanted to move my old Braun to our summer place, I went to my favorite Amazon site and discovered that the new Kitchen Aid had been redesigned with a plain feed tube. Well, KitchenAid has great products and the world's best company service - so I jumped at the chance to order this model. I didn't even look for Braun - my mistake - they are still sold - but apparently not as popular. But now I am going to try to return my new KitchenAid processor because in the re-design two flaws were added. One, the slanted bowl collects chopped stuff and holds it, rather than allowing it to fall back down for additional chopping. The straight-side didn't have that problem. Second, the cute little extra bowl comes with the price of a reduced-height center tube on the big bowl, so even a dozen eggs will flow back through the shaft and onto the base. Neither of these troubled my old Braun. I'm hoping Amazon or KitchenAid will take this one back so I can order another faithful Braun.
Update: I didn't send it back. Decided to keep it. But the faults (slanted sides and very small liquid capacity are still major turn off. When I called to ask about KitchenAid making a straight-sided bowl which I would gladly buy as an accessory - the answer is "no" and when challenged about the negative reviews, "Just a bunch of negative people" was their answer. KitchenAid doesn't hear very well! If you're looking at this one, I suggest you move on to another product.
Customer Review: Everything I was looking for! Summary: 4 Stars
I received this in the mail a few weeks ago. I had been wanting a food processor for a while, being sick of using my previous method of crushing foods, the "culinary hammer" way. (for those of you still without a food processor, it's wrapping your food in a ziploc baggie then taking a small clean hammer to it). This machine works much, much better than that. I would describe myself as an early-twenties, novie-foodie, with a penchant for spanish cuisine. That being said, as someone who is just getting started, I really like this machine. I was used to a tiny, one-cup processor my parents used to avoid washing their cumbersome large machine.
While this machine is larger than what I am used to, it's not really a pain in the butt. The blades work well, its easy to clean. It's fairly intuitive to use if you have ever used a food processor before, but might take some getting used to if you have not. So far, I've used it to make hummus, pico de gallo, potato chips (with the slicer blade), aioli, and to cream butter and sugar together (which, those of you out there without a hand mixer know can be more than difficult). My quality of life (in the kitchen, being a lazy person who likes good food) has greatly improved.
I would recommend this machine. But I'm not the veteran chef who can tell you about blade sharpness-holding, or electrical power or whatnot. I just wanted a machine that had buttons that were easy to clean and had enough power to do what I wanted. I've got that.
Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to wonder how I got on without it.
Customer Review: Broke after a couple years Summary: 2 Stars
Ordered this a couple years ago, for the price I was very surprised to see it was Made in China. Kitchenaid had always been American made and known for its top notch quality. Not anymore. I should've sent it back then and there, but for some reason I didn't.
At first I was impressed. Seemed quiet, powerful, and worked really well. After a few months of usage though the handle of the bowl started getting crud jammed in it and it's very difficult to open up and clean due to the idiotic nanny safety shut off device inside. Instead of making the handle solid and relying on the fact that you're smart enough not to stick your fingers in it while it's running, there's a stupid interlock that shuts it off if you open the lid. Not long after the cheap plastic on this broke and the only way to operate it at all was to stick a toothpick into the switch on the base which is hard to do and use it at the same time.
Recently while using it, the motor completely burned out. This after only a couple years of light (maybe once weekly) usage. I opened the unit up to see if the brushes are serviceable and found the motor is molded into the plastic of the base! It can't even be removed. Typical completely disposable cheap chinese junk. It's obvious kitchenaid cut every possible corner on this. I tossed it in the trash where it belongs and picked up a used Made in USA Kitchenaid food processor from the 80s on an online auction site as a replacement and have no doubt it will far outlast this one.
Never again will I consider any Kitchenaid products.
