Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

Customer Review: Your Own Personal Assistant (In the Kitchen)
Summary: 5 Stars

For years I balked at the cost however, after replacing two underpowered poor-performing handmixers over the years, I took the plunge and purchased the KitchenAid Stand Mixer. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner! This mixer has provided me with four years of hands-free use, with predictable power and consistency. It makes wonderful lump-free batters, stiff meringue, smooth frostings, perfect whipped potatoes, and even kneads bread dough. The included recipe book is a perfect introduction to it's array of capabilities but don't hesitate to let it take over other chores in the kitchen. There are a multitude of tasks the mixer can perform with optional accessories that are available for purchase. Turn last night's roast into today's sandwich using the meat grinding attachment, churn out authentic fettuccine with the Pasta Attachment, prepare fresh juice using the Juicing Attachment, it can even open cans and mill grains. So many possibilities...and all with the quality and classic styling you would expect from KitchenAid.

Customer Review: I love this machine
Summary: 5 Stars

I really do love this machine. I talked my aunt into buying one for me for a wedding present. Needless to say, the mixer has lasted longer than my marriage. I haven't gotten any of the fancy attachments or extras. I just have the bowl, and the three basic attachments (paddle, whisk, and bread hook). Addmittedly, I think I've only used the bread hook a few times. I have a bread machine, so I just don't need to use it. However, the mixer has enabled me to make hundreds and hundreds of cookies every winter holiday season. I also use it to make mashed potatoes and massive amounts of zucchini bread (you know, from those monster zucchini that get away from you in the garden). As a matter of fact, my mixer has helped to make my reputation of being an above average baker. My mixer has never let me down. It is heavy enough to mix the really tough doughs and fast enough to whip up egg whites. My only complaint is that the little handles on the "lock" and "speed" switches fell off almost immediatly. Not a big deal, but slightly irritating.

Customer Review: Buy at own risk!
Summary: 2 Stars

I received this mixer for a wedding gift almost 8 years ago. I used it very little in the first years, just cookies maybe once a month. From the day I opened it, it made a "weird" noise when in use but because it was so infrequent I often forgot about it until I used it again, finally realizing my warranty (VERY short at only a year!) was up. I decided to just use it until it died. It is still going but has been leaking oil/grease for sometime, today deciding to spew grease in my cheesecake. :( I went online to see why it was doing this only to find TONS of horrible reviews of similar situations and breaking mixers and horrible customer service. If it's after a year it isn't their problem it seems. I think when you pay hundreds of dollars for a product it should come with some sort of care. Unfortunately KA has fallen in the last few years, no longer is it the product we will pass on to our children and grandchildren. So sad. I won't be buying another one when this one dies for good. I will go with Cuisinart or Viking.

Customer Review: basic flaw in engineering
Summary: 2 Stars

Why does Kitchenaid take an obvious shortcomming and turn it into the opportunity to sell you something else. As any cook who has ever used one of these machines or even watched a TV program with someone using one of these machines can tell you, the bowl is too narrow. Its impossible to add ingredients without stopping the mixer and raising the beater. Unless you use some kind of device or don't mind spilling stuff all over.
I think that Kitchenaid could have redesigned their bowls with a flared edge along one side that would serve two purposes. It would allow ingredients to go in and allow easy pouring for ingredients to come out. But instead Kitchenaid saw it is a chance to makes a gizmo that fits the top of the bowl to get ingredients in. And hey they can shaft folks for more money at the same time.
I would also like to see the mixer shaft disengage when I am using the horizontal shaft for their attachments. And finally a better, more secure connection system for those attachments would be good.

Customer Review: My husband is getting fat.
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this as a wedding gift and have used it at least weekly ever since. I just got through the holiday baking season without breaking a sweat and without splattering my walls with various batters. It's great to be able to walk away from the mixer to get and measure ingredients. I had to use a hand mixer at Christmas to make a cheesecake, and boy did I ever miss my kitchenaid!
I bake all the time and this just makes the process more efficient. It's flippin' heavy, but you'll use it so much it won't matter, you'll keep it on your counter. If you have a small kitchen with limited counterspace, you're S.O.L. but I'd rather put away the coffeemaker every day than have to move the goliath mixer. If you don't think you'll use it much, then don't buy it, because it takes up a LOT of space.
However, if you bake cookies, cakes, mash potatoes, whip cream, whip egg whites, or even mix a batch of jello pudding with any sort of frequency, it is worth it to have this machine.
