Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, WhiteCustomer Review: The Only Mixer You'll Ever Need Summary: 5 Stars
The KitchenAid Classic 4 1/2 Quart Stand Mixer
This is the only mixer you'll ever need to buy. I'm not kidding.
My husband bought me a regular mixer for Christmas in 1980. Within a few months, I had a spoon stuck in between the beaters and the mixer was ruined.
The next Christmas, 1982, he bought me a KitchenAid Mixer. The only thing that didn't hold up was the egg beater. I have a regular beater, and a dough hook.
I have made bread, cakes, mashed potatoes and you name it with this mixer. I have had my KitchenAid for 26 years, and taught four children to cook. I am now using the mixer to make cakes with my grandchildren.
I have never had any maintenance done on my mixer. It still works as well as it did the day I took it out of the box.
I have recommended this mixer to everyone.
If you buy this mixer first, you will never need to buy another mixer.
You couldn't jam a spoon into the beater, if you tried.

Customer Review: Not- for- Bread Mixer! Summary: 3 Stars
My first Kitchenaid K45,was purchased in 1972,(when they were still made by Hobart) when I had carpal tunnel surgery in both hands at once. I have always made all our bread (family of 6) by hand, and it was a blessing indeed. I used it for 25 years, until it seemed to overheat too soon, nothing really wrong with it, I just wanted a new one.I thought the same model (Amazon had a great price!) would do the same job, but alas, it really struggled with my bread dough. Kitchenaid sent a replacement, and it works better, but does leak oil. I notice that others have the same problem, and that the lubricant is a solid, that melts as the motor heats up. And yes, the bowl is VERY hard to remove, bread dough seems to screw it tighter. Also surprised that it was never meant to knead bread dough per the phone rep. Hmmm! Thinking about an upgrade (Consumer Reports still recommends it), but wonder how far up I need to go. I use it only for bread and meatloaf, we don't eat cakes and cookies much, although it would be fine for such lighter type doughs. Will definitely get a lift bowl, not the tilt-top.
Customer Review: Invest in your kitchen! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this model about 7 years ago (before they were available in stainless steel) and don't know how I ever got by without it. This appliance has faithfully done everything I've ever asked of it. Some reviewers have criticized this mixer when it comes to kneading bread dough. For that, I have a bread maker so I've seldom used the mixer for that purpose so I can't really say one way or the other, but for every other mixing chore, this is a superb machine.
If you spend enough time in your kitchen to need a counter top mixer, I highly recommend this model. It's easy to clean, relatively quiet and is attractive enough that you won't mind having it out even when not in use. This model comes in a variety of colors (mine is white) and is even now available in stainless.
It mixes smooth and evenly. The head lifts and locks for easy access. I don't have any of the available attachments such as the juicer, so I am reviewing here, only the mixer itself. I cannot speak to the effectivness or efficiency of the various attachments.
Customer Review: Prefect for Amateur Home Baker (otherwise, go bigger) Summary: 4 Stars
This stand mixer, a real classic piece of kitchenware, is just perfect for the amateur home chef or baker. It is like having your own prep team there to whip egg whites into meringue, knead pizza dough for 30 minutes, or just keep stirring while you add a stream of hot butter. I was happy with this for years until my hobby became an obsession (and my light reading included confectionery text books).
My only complaint with this sturdy standby is that it is no longer large enough to deal with the yields I'm demanding. I also tend to store it in the pantry instead of on the counter for space. I did not buy any of the attachments either, so this is based solely on the item as is (stand, bowl, paddle, whisk and dough hook). They did not seem necessary, although I heard a rumor there was an option with one model for an ice-bath bowl. That would be VERY helpful. Other than that - she's a classic kitchen icon. A must have.
On a side note, white may not be as sleek and stylish as the chrome, but it is so much easier to keep clean.
Customer Review: Hallelujah, I finally have it! Summary: 5 Stars
There isn't really much I could add to reviews about this. KitchenAid is legendary for its amazing stand mixers. It works smoothly and beautifully, is able for any tasks, and comes with a basic set of attachments that will enable the user to make almost anything. It was amazingly liberating to be able to cream butter while sifting the flour for a batch of cookies. I'd been using my cheap, poorly-made, hand mixer for so long, it was amazing just how much time I saved by having a mixer that actually works.
The classic isn't quite as powerful as the other series that KitchenAid has put out, but it works well for my needs. I'm not making heavy bread dough every single day or doing baking for a business, so it is certainly more than sufficient for me. If, however, you ARE doing some really heavy-duty baking, it might be better to seek out the Professional or Commercial series, instead, as the Classic's motor might not be able to withstand a professional level of use.
But for me, it is PERFECT and I love it so much!
