Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid K45SS Classic 250-Watt 4-1/2-Quart Stand Mixer, White

Customer Review: The Best Small Appliance In My Kitchen
Summary: 5 Stars

I have own this model for 4 years now and cannot believe the things I didn't make because I didn't want to be stuck with a mixer in my hand or spending my day kneeding dough. I have used it to help make everything from whipping egg whites (with the beater blade) for angelfood cake to putting on the dough hook and making homemade fondant for a cake. Granted, I looked at my kitchenaid like the little engine who could while it was slowly plowing through the fondant, but it still did a beautiful job and has continued to work great no matter what I toss in it. It can even make perfectly mashed potatoes by starting the mixture off with the paddle, but put on the whip and turn it to a high number (above 6) to give the potatoes a smooth, fluffy texture that is to die for.

For those looking to purchase it I would suggest purchasing a scraper blade (I always have to scrape the bowl at least once when mixing) and a shield to prevent spilling (in case you overfill the bowl like I do nearly every time). Those would have to be my only two complaints. But also look into other attachments that connect to the kitchenaid that will bump you up a level in your cooking.

With this machine you'll look for reasons to use it.

Customer Review: Does a lot, does it well
Summary: 5 Stars

This mixer is the version of KitchenAid that lifts the head away to remove the beaters. The bowl sits on a round stand on the base. (Some larger units have a lift to move the bowl under the beaters.) At 250 watts and 4 1/2 quarts, in white, this is a mixer that fits most people's needs.

What this mixer does particularly well is tp prepare bread dough, using a dough hook that slaps the dough around the bowl, stretching it and beating it in an effective kneading motion. But if you are a cookie baker, this makes short work of the creaming stage where butter or other solid fat and sugar must be mixed together. The wire beater makes short work of eggwhites or whipping cream. Just remember to keep the bowl and beater free of any grease or oil when you do the egg whites.

In a way, the KitchenAid is a good substitute for a bread machine, doing everything but the unattended kneading, knock-down and loaf baking stages, which are pretty easy. I tend to make bread more in the KitchenAid than in the breadmaker because I prefer the freedom to make a round loaf, a braided loaf, rolls or heavier dough than a machine can handle. And for making cookie dough for Christmas or parties, this is a must. Five stars for this mixer.

Customer Review: An indispensible kitchen tool that lasts a very long time
Summary: 4 Stars

My wife and I received the KitchenAid Classic Mixer as a wedding gift, over 15 years ago. It's still going strong. I think that's one of the best recommendations that can be given for any product.

We've been using it regularly in the kitchen (at least two to three times a week) ever since we got it. Unlike most of the kitchen gadgets we've bought and had to replace every few years (microwaves, blenders, toasters, food processors, waffle irons, hand mixers) this one still works as well as when we bought it. We did have to replace the wire whip attachment - one of the wires popped out after about fourteen years. I will say that was the attachment we used most, so it doesn't surprise me, since it does take a beating. (I will say, though, that it'd be nice if there were a way to adjust the distance between the attachment and the bowl - that might eliminate some of the beating.)

I won't repeat what others have said about its many excellent qualities. I thought it might be helpful for people to know that this is a highly reliable brand, that's built to last. We use it mostly to make cookies, cakes, pastries, breads, omelletes, and the like. It works like a charm. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: The most fabulous mixer ever...plus it looks cute too!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love my mixer. I bought it five years ago after wanting one for about twenty years. I bought it at Christmas time and was inspired to make loads and loads of cookies which turned out beautifully and perfectly mixed. That baby could mix up a giant batch of gingerbread in what seemed like seconds! If you have ever mixed a gingerbread recipe by hand, you'll know why I'm so excited about it! It incorporated five cups of flour with no effort. WOW! Now, I know that one lady who reviewed this mixer before gave it only two stars for the motor and the warranty, but possibly she got a lemon. I don't use mine for bread very often, because I was brought up baking bread and kneading the dough by hand, but perhaps if it is used every day, the motor would wear a tad. I know that I've always been happy with mine and I use it often. I love the way it looks on the counter and it's extremely easy to clean. The bowl, dough hook and paddle are all dishwasher safe. The only hand wash item is the wisk, which is no big deal. The body with the motor wipes clean in a snap and it's always easy to whip together a recipe in no time. I love it and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new stand mixer.

Customer Review: I'm in love and his name is KitchenAid!
Summary: 5 Stars

I received a white one for an early christmas gift and just used it for the first time on he christmas cookies that are a tradition in my family. In the past years, I've used my mother's old stand-mixer, and I've also used a hand mixer, which is near impossible to do with this recipe. This year, I used my new mixer and I am blown away! These cookies, that usually take forever, were done in no time! And even though I didn't think the 4 1/2 quart bowl would be big enough for the whole recipe, I had no problem and room to spare! It's surprisingly deep. It also stayed relatively cool through the three batches of cookies I made (I'm used to beginning to smell smoke from my mothers!)

I only used the flat beater yesterday, but have some bread recpies that I'm dying to use the dough hook on.

Just a few concerns...The dough sticks to the side of the bowl, so I did have to stop from time to time and scrape it off, but that was nothing that I wasn't used to. And you cannot attach a larger bowl to this mixer...the only other bowl you can attach is one of the same size with a handle.

And definately invest in a splash guard. You only get lemon extract in your eyes once to make that decision.
