Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials 2-Quart Tea Kettle, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Design over functionality Summary: 3 Stars
Kettle looks great but it seems to have some functionality problems.
As a daily tea drinker, I'd like to quickly fill kettle with water and set it to boil, all in one quick action. Instead, this kettle requires for you to remove top and then fill it that way, or you have to tinker with the whistle/cover, trying to open it while holding the kettle at the right angle for filling.
It doesn't allow you to fill it through its 'mouth'. A must when you're drinking tea twice a day, like me. In addition, sure, the cute color-matching silicone thingy in the handle is a nice design statement, but it doesn't work well, it conducts heat!
If you're buying this item for its design qualities (Like another reviewer on this page, matching all the pink Kitchenaid gadgets in his kitchen)you'll be quite happy (Kettle could actually feature at the Museum of Modern Art as a great product of industrial design)but if you're buying it for the simple task of boiling water for your tea, might as well look at other products.
Customer Review: Handle heats up... Summary: 3 Stars
...that's what I would've liked to know before I purchased this thing. There's silicone (or something) on the handle itself as well as at the points where the handle joins the body, but those may just be for show, as you clearly need to use a potholder to pick this thing up. It's pretty (the brushed version anyway), it's nicely weighted and pours alright, and has a wide enough base to accommodate my largest burner on my stove and heats up fast.
Other reasons I don't love this thing:
The whistle tone is shrill
The hole on top is kind of small, too small to really get in there and clean it out.
You have to manually flip that lever to open AND to close the spout
Slim pickins here on Amazon tho, and I'm not sure if anybody has a kettle that has a cool handle... so I think it's ok.
UPDATE: One of the hard-plastic pads that sit betweet the handle and the kettle's body has partially melted. I'm not sure how or why, and the kettle still works just fine.
Customer Review: So Far So Good Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this kettle to replace my beloved and irreplaceable white Pfaltzgraff tuilp handled tea kettle with hummingbird on whistler. I loved its whimsy. Alas, the inside was getting pitted and rusted where the enamel coating had come off. I've been searching the 'net for some place to send it to get re-enameled but no luck. Anyway, we re did our kitchen almost 4 years ago with stainless steel appliances and this new kettle compliments the kitchen nicely. The whistle is loud (just make sure the lid is on properly and tight and the whistler is covering the spout. The handle stays cool allowing you to pick up the kettle without a pot holder. Of course I pour the hot water as soon as the kettle whistles. I Imagine the handle would get warmer if the kettle were left on the stove longer, the lid wasn't on properly or the whistler lid wasn't down on the spout. Although the new kettle doesn't have a whit of whimsy, I guess it is time to pack my old kettle away (can't bear to part with it).
Customer Review: Tea Kettle whistles from soft to loud, and does not spit. Looks great too! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the stainless steel KitchenAid tea kettle to make loose leaf tea and hot cocoa. It works fantastic! I read amazon reviews before purchasing the kettle. I was worried that the kettle would spit boiling water or burn me with steam. Neither of those things has happened. If you fill the kettle below the spout, the kettle will whistle properly and water will NOT spit out of it. Also, if you take off the lid once the kettle's water is boiling and pour the hot water into your cup, Yes, it will steam your hand and hurt. Keep the lid on the kettle while pouring the hot contents (: I love this kettle. It holds the perfect amount of water and the whistle is fabulous. The whistle starts out soft and becomes whistling loud as the water continues boiling. It is not obnoxious. It's fun to hear. I've received a lot of compliments on the tea kettle's appearance. I've received a lot of compliments from men...funny that they like it so much. I'd pay double for this kettle; it's worth it.
Customer Review: love it Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted a good quality tea kettle when my wife and I stopped drinking coffee. After checking out several differant kettles, I went with the kitchen aid stainless. We use it multiple times, daily. The one concern I had was the spout opener. I was used to the kettles with a sort of trigger opener and this one looked a bit awkward. Turned out to be very easy; it stays open when you push it down. Haven't encountered any of the issues other reviewers have complained about; handle too hot, rubber melting. It's a big kettle and you don't need to fill it to the top. That should solve that issue. The other complaint I read about was tape smearing from the lid being attached during shipping. Peeling, rather than pulling the tape should solve that. If any tape residue is left, a cloth with warm soapy water should solve that.
In all, I'm VERY happy with this purchase and would recommend it without hesitation to anyone that want's an attractive, functional, high quality tea kettle.
