Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of KitchenAid Gourmet Essentials 2-Quart Porcelain Tea Kettle, Terra CottaCustomer Review: KitchenAid Tea Kettle Summary: 4 Stars
The Design:
The no-slip handle allows for ease of picking up and pouring without burning your hand. The water pours out gracefully (rather than a rush or a trickle). The pour spout lever flips up and down with ease. The water cover lid takes a bit more effort to pull off, but I think it is supposed to fit snug to work properly.
The Color:
Picked the terra cotta and love the richness. As there are many beautiful colors to choose from, I think it is just a matter of which one.
The Whistle:
Make sure not to overfill as the whistle will not work at all! Otherwise, the whistle does its job- sounds like a screeching hurricane.
The Quality:
It is a sturdy tea kettle and has some weight to it. The care instructions recommend heating on a "medium" setting rather than "high" which I think is a good idea (takes a little longer to heat up, but less chance of scorching it).
The only reason it lost a STAR was because the finish on the color coating may be of issue. It was slightly flawed on arrival inspection (some greyish discoloration on a (small) area near the rim on the top/ also (slightly) bubbled up rather than smooth like the rest of it on that same spot). Another two spots that look like they may chip. I did not return it because it is not really apparent unless you are inspecting closely... but this is the one thing I would beware. I'll see in time.
Durability:
I have only used it a few times and am happy so far.
Eco/Global/Shipping:
The packaging for shipping is a bit excessive/wasteful. The kettle is manufactured in Thailand. It shipped on time.
Comparisons:
I looked at many different kettles and was initially attracted to the le creucet line. However, they seemed to have several poor reviews and were more expensive ($60+). I like the look of the kitchenaid, and believe the price is reasonable. (I paid $29.99+ tax/ free shipping)
Tea Time:
~orange spice rooibos with honey. mmm
review update March 2011: The interior coating of the tea kettle totally chipped out (due to hard water?) I can't believe I was drinking chips of that coating which is probably totally toxic. I was going to throw it out, but the exterior was still so pretty that I decided to put it on craigslist. It sold for $15 even with the inside so worn & 4 years old. I will get one with a stainless steel interior next time.
