Customer Review: Replacing is a huge ordeal

As several posters have said, the problem with doing this replacement yourself is getting the old one off. The old coupler sits on a rotating peg which sticks through the top of the blender base. If you try to loosen the old coupler (the opposite of righty-tighty), the peg and motor both turn with it. There's no way to get it to turn by itself. It's like setting a soft drink 2-liter on a table and trying to unscrew the cap with one arm. If you can't hold the base steady for force in the opposite direction, it'll just keep spinning you'll get nowhere.
The peg itself has two flat sides to it where I suppose people in the factory have a special flat steel tool that can slide in there, holding the peg in place while you screw the coupler either on or off. Such a tool was not for sale at Home Depot and another hardware store I tried. The gap was too tight for needle-nose pliers and I even tried sticking the pronged part of a hammer under there: no such luck.
I took off the bottom and attempted to take the whole motor out, but it wouldn't come out because the coupler was still attached to the top. You might be able to rip all the rubber off and get the metal part of the coupler to come through that way, but I didn't try.
I finally got the thing off by sticking several small screwdrivers into the motor to prevent it from spinning. I figured I'd probably break at least some of the plastic fins on the fan (I did) but just gave it a good turn anyway and it finally gave.
Regardless of the marginal success I had (and other posters had) getting this thing to come off, it is NOT worth it. I spent several hours on this project going to stores (also spent gas money) and tinkering with it myself and now I have a blender with broken fins.
What really makes me mad is that they could have included this little flat tool (probably 20 cents' worth of steel) and made the whole process simple just like how they include an allen wrench with assemble-it-yourself furniture. Seems like a major oversight to me. I was really shocked to find a 5-star rating for this coupler. I was very disappointed.
