Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter

Customer Review: A corporate maneuver, for you to switch brewers
Summary: 2 Stars

Maneuver: to guide with adroitness and design

First, I would like to state up front, that I love my Keurig B50 brewer. I find many of the K-Cups convenient and tasty. But, I do believe that the 'My K-Cup' product is nothing more than a tactical maneuver.

I have tried, as no doubt many have, to get a decent cup of coffee using the 'My K-Cup'(even using the Internet 'fixes'). But, as many have discovered, the product produces consistently weak, watered down coffee (R.I.P. Boca Java Sunrise, Boca Java Bananas Foster Float, and Chock full O' Nuts Original).

I believe the company is aware of this. How could they not come to the same conclusion during the product testing phase? But, think about it. If they offer a product that 'touts' the fact that you can use your own coffee grinds with the Keurig unit, many people who are deciding which coffee maker to buy will think, "Oh, this one not only offers the convenience of single serve coffee, but I can also use grounds I already have. This is win-win!" Wrong.

If you are considering a Keurig, buy the unit with the thought that you will only be able to use the pre-made K-Cups (which are good, convenient, but more expensive than buying it by the bag). Do not allow them to deceive you into believing you will be able to make the same (or even close to the same) quality brew with your own grinds as you would with a traditional coffee maker.

Just a 'heads up' for potential buyers. A little bait and switch action.

Customer Review: Check your brewer type before you buy
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the ONLY way to get a strong mug of coffee out of a Keurig. I grind my own beans to an espresso grind then gently pack the coffee into this filter. I can run two smaller brews through the filter to get a good mug of coffee. Yes, you will get some bean residue in your cup, but it's not that bad. Hey, you spent all that money for the brewer and this filter is the only way to get a real cup of coffee. I found the k-cups to be weak and too expensive, even the "bold" versions.
I have tried this filter in a newer Keurig and it has a poor seal which allows the hot water to flow around the filter. Besides weak coffee you end up with hot water on the counter. You need to indtify the seal to determine which type brewer you have. Look up into the top of the brewer and find the metal dispenser with the sharp point that pierces the top of the k-cups. If the seal around it is solid rubber - like a round rubber O-ring then you have a newer model and this filter will not work properly. The model I have has a black rubber seal.
If you have a foam rubber seal that is an older model and it will work properly. This model has an off-white or light yellow foam rubber seal.
If you are unsure then just get the red filter basket. Solofill Cup, Refillable K-Cup For Keurig Brewers It is easier to use and works in any Keurig because it fits into the k-cup slot. Amazon shows it as one of the other product options.

Customer Review: So far, so good
Summary: 4 Stars

Wasn't going to try this, based on the negative reviews, but the My K Cup came with our Keurig Platinum (manufacturer has supposedly remedied bad pump situation at this time), along with 72 sample cups, from a warehouse store. AND the price of the whole package was STILL $30 cheaper than BB&B, with only 12 sample cups and no accessories. We used it as is, right out of the box, no modifications. I did carefully lower the top gasket, surrounding the upper puncture needle, of the Keurig ever so slightly to ensure a good seal, per other reviewers. We have used it with regular old bulk Maxwell house and Folgers -- decent cup for what is was. Used it with loose tea from a tea bag, still good, but could have used a longer brew time -- it was an herbal tea. Teeccinno Hazelnut -- absolutely delicious; used the smaller mug setting. Each time we filled the basket (just spooned it in with no packing) to the upper fill mark, except for with the tea from the teabag, and brushed off any excess. We have been using the sink sprayer to clean the whole unit off almost immediately. Well, when cool enough to touch. I can't comment on durability at this time. Perhaps it is the combination of oils from the coffee and heat which causes the plastic in the units to deteriorate with use. Just speculation on my part. Oh, and for those of you who see the need to insert a used k-cup into the unit, I noticed the hot chocolate k-cups have no filters so that would save you a step, if you happen to have one of those around.

Customer Review: TEA WITH MY K-CUP
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm actually a tea drinker, so I was looking for something that would let me brew a cup at a time. (I also wanted to have something around for coffee drinking friends who dropped by.) The selection of packaged black teas (Keurig, Flavia, etc.) is actually pretty dismal, so a way to brew a wide variety of teas was my challenge. The Keurig machines with the My K-Cup seemed to offer the only solution, so I made the plunge.

The biggest problem is steeping time. Black tea normally steeps for around 2:30 to 4:00. That's much longer than the brew time for a Keurig. Loading up the My K-Cup filter with good quality loose tea produced a cup that was almost (but not quite) strong enough...But that also meant using at least twice the tea per cup. (I did notice that you could brew a second cup from the same leaves with little or no increase in bitterness.)

The solution -- which may seem tedious -- is actually pretty easy. I put an ounce or two of tea into a Cuisinart spice grinder and give it a few hits. The result is tea about the same "grind" as in a packaged K-Cup or in a good quality commercial tea bag. You can store this fine-ground tea in small airtight containers...A few minutes with the grinder can give you a whole selection of loose tea for the Keurig.

I now have two My K-Cup cones, and two extra filters, so I'm good to go. I also trimmed the lock tabs off the stock K-Cup holder, so that comes out of the machine with less struggle (not really needed anyway).

Customer Review: It Works, with some Limitations
Summary: 3 Stars

I found the strength of the coffee fine, provided I did not make the tall (12 oz) cup, which some Keurig machines provide. Also, in spite of instructions not to do so, I tamped the coffee down. Users who find the coffee weak might also want to use a strong roast. (I use Starbucks.)
PROS:
1. It is cheaper.
2. It is more environmentally correct.
3. It allows you to use your personal favorite brand of coffee.
CONS:
1. It is a lot messier. (More Muss.) One of the reasons I got the Keurig machine was that I didn't want the coffee leaks & grinds on the counter. Well, since you are filling a tiny basket for each cup of coffee, you get more grinds on the counter than if you were using a conventional brewer.
2. It is a lot less convenient. (More Fuss.) In order to make a fresh cup, you must pop out the basket holder, open it, dump the grinds, wash all pieces, fill it up again, put the cover back on and reinsert. If you are going to make several cups over the course of the day, it gets old.
3. It is difficult to make 2 cups in a row, e.g. for two people. The basket is too hot to handle. If you want to do this, you should buy two to allow one to cool down.
CONCLUSION: It may work for you, if you are a light coffee drinker. It did not work day to day for us, two people who drink several cups each. I went back to the K-cups. However, it was worth the purchase price to me so that I can have an occasional cup of Starbucks, which I love.
