Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter

Customer Review: Greening the K-cup
Summary: 5 Stars

The re-usable filter is as good as it gets when it comes to everyone having their way without adding more unrecyclable k-cups to the hundreds of thousands already pouring into landfills. The broad concept of the Keurig machine seemed a logical solution to family peace around incompatible coffee choices first thing in the morning. No one here's got time in the morning to wait around for individual French-compressors so k-cup selections appeared to be a viable approach to family peace and getting off the right foot. We couldn't believe however that a modern-day gizmo could be so environmentally brutal. Company web site's CSR report says they can't do anything about it, etc, which is probably right but less for reasons they cite than the fact they were major investors in the development of the machine that funnels coffee consumers to the Green Mountain brand. But back to the filter. Couldn't stand diverting coffee grounds from compost to the trash. The reusable filters are like regular wire-mesh reusable filters, although on the scale of a cold-medicine dosing cup. They fit into a plastic casing that you can pop into the place designed for k-cups -- after you've adjusted the machine first to do that. Straightforward directions spell out how -- it's no big deal. Okay, it's a tad more laborious than throwing in a k-cup, but it brews fast, and everyone gets their way from Vanilla Dunkin Donuts to Starbucks to Maxwell House unless one minute of work is too overwhelming. If it is and pumping up the community landfill works better for you, then go ahead and enjoy that while it lasts.

Customer Review: Simplicity + Economy - Convenience = Decent Product
Summary: 4 Stars

I got my K-Cup Brewer for Christmas and then lucked out in finding clearance 18 boxes Green Mountain and Caribou k-cups at Linens n Things and Sears ($2.50-3.75 a box, not the INSANE $9.95 retail pricing). The deal here on Amazon is pretty good two (2 boxes (k-cups 25 count vs 18 retail) for $20-23 depending on sale/maker...

As far as store bought coffee, I like the Eight o' Clock Columbian coffee and it makes a fantastic cup of coffee with this insert. Starbucks ground can be a little too bitter in my experience. Obviously, this is an entirely subjective matter.

The Kuerig system is a great platform, but a little bit more effort is needed to use store-bought coffee for one cup of coffee. I have two coffee delivery platforms (lol)- the Keurig machine and my trusty six cup French press. The latter can be a time/effort saver but unless you have a thermal carafe (or two are drinking the coffee) the pressed coffee cools all too quickly.

The rest of the reviewers are general right about the upsides/downsides of this insert. I like it. Sure, you have to wash it out every time, but that takes 15 seconds. I rinse out the mesh filter in cold water, shake it dry, and load up for the next cup. I use the coffee grounds for compost for my garden, so this thing makes me a lot less guilty about clogging up the landfills with my all too numerous plastic k-cup empties, too.

Bottom line is this, if you want a 'Plan B' when the k-cups run out and have ground coffee in the house (but no other coffee maker), this is the way to go.

Customer Review: Like brewing a full pot of coffee every time you want a cup
Summary: 3 Stars

I guess this does what it is supposed to do. But its worth realizing before you buy it (or before you buy a Keurig machine) that this is basically just a mini coffee filter. So every time you want a single cup of coffee, you have to do all the same things before and after brewing that you used to do in order to make a full pot. Get out the coffee, fill the filter, put together the K Cup assembly, brew the coffee, empty the filter, clean the filter, clean all parts of the assembly. This is no big deal if you just want one cup, but if you like to drink a few cups of coffee throughout the morning, it actually takes more time than its worth. Oh, I also made the modification by cutting up a K-Cup, as described in one of the other Amazon reviews. People said that made such a difference, I never even tried it without it. But that's an extra piece to wash every time.

The Keurig wasn't really designed to be used this way. It was designed to be used with the pre-filled gourmet K-cups. Those are very convenient and make a very good cup of coffee. The problem is, it costs nearly 50 cents per cup. Those of us used to home-brewing our own coffee never paid anywhere near that. If you are used to buying a Starbucks coffee for $3 every day, then you have money to burn already, and this represents good savings for you. But otherwise, ripping through those 50 cent cups of home-brewed coffee adds up. This alternative lets you use your own coffee at a more reasonable price (still requires more coffee grounds per cup, however), but its a lot more work.

Customer Review: Buying The Keurig My K-Cup Is An Economically And Environmentally Wise Decision
Summary: 5 Stars

My parents spoil me! They bought me a Keurig B30 Mini Brewer for my office. It is a wonderful present; I use it every day. Along with the brewer, my parents gave me the Keurig My K-Cup which complements the brewer, making it more economical, convenient and fun to use.

Some of my friends at work drink one cup of coffee after another all day. The disposable cups can become expensive. Not to mention the environmental impact that they have on our landfills. The reusable My K-cup has saved me a lot of money. I buy my favorite French Vanilla coffee from the grocery store across the street from my apartment complex. I simply spoon the coffee into the filter basket. Depending on how much caffeine I need, I can easily vary the strength of the coffee. Sometimes one spoonful is enough. Sometimes I use two. Sometimes, if I stayed up late writing a review for Amazon, I pack the filter basket full of delicious coffee.

Clean up is a breeze. I take the entire K-Cup filter assembly to the break room, shake the coffee grounds into the trash can and rinse the lid, filter basket and filter holder in the sink. It takes about five minutes to clean the Keurig My-Cup.

I highly recommend purchasing the Keurig My Cup if you are fortunate enough to own a Keurig Gourmet Single Cup Home Brewing System. It will definitely enhance its use. It is wise from both an economical and environmental standpoint. Less disposable K-cups will need to be thrown into the landfills.

Customer Review: Works Great! Very Happy with Coffee Brewed using My K-Cup
Summary: 5 Stars

The rising cost of k-cups drove me the the My K-Cup. I chose My K-Cup over other brands because (1) no hinges to possibly break; (2) not having the continued expense of purchasing paper filters, and (3) the availability of additional filter cups to allow me to make multiple cups of coffee before needing to clean out the filters.

The My K-Cup is exactly as pictured - light gray with a screw on cap & a metal/plastic filter cup. Since my spouse prefers a milder cup of coffee than I do, I purchase a stronger roast, fill the My K-Cup 3/4 of the way full for my coffee & just a little over 1/2 for spouse's coffee. I clean the filter out between brews & refill (I have yet to purchase the additional filter cups).

I've had great success with the My K-Cup and my coffee expenses have gone down significantly. I use aifferent brands of ground coffee in the My K-Cup (vs pre-packaged K-Cups), so I can't compare apples-to-apples on the brew. However, in terms of coffee strength/flavor, I get a satisfactory brew using my 3/4 fill method & darker roast coffee. The strength is equivalent to my favorite pre-packaged K-Cups.

I do notice that if I'm in a hurry & don't get the used grounds cleaned out of the filter before brewing again (ie, don't rinse the filter under water), then I will have some sludge in the bottom of my coffee cup (like a drip coffee at the end of a pot).

Overall, I like the My K-Cup and recommend it if you are looking to curb your k-cup coffee expenses.
