Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: Simple fix works great Summary: 5 Stars
I liked the concept of a single cup coffee maker but wanted to use my own coffee that my husbands roasts for me weekly. I know that with any of the gold filters, you can get some of the very fine grounds in your cup but you also get more of the coffee oils which I think means more flavor.
For Christmas, my husband gave me the Keurig Special Edition as well as the My K-Cup. I ordered a pack of two additional filters for the K-Cup so that it would be easy to make a couple of cups in a row. The My K-Cup worked great.
After about 6 months, we had a problem with the brewer but Keurig customer support was great and quickly sent a replacement. The problem I have been having with the new brewer is that the My K-Cup didn't work very well - overflowed, grounds in the coffee, etc. I was getting pretty aggravated but finally thought of checking the Amazon postings.
I saw the suggestion to slide the O-Ring down and tried it. IT WORKED!!!
Here are the simple instructions for this fix:
1. Open the lid and look under it. (You may need a flash light.)
2. See the needle that inserts the water into the K-Cup. At the top of this needle, you should be able to see an O-Ring.
3. Be careful - the needle is sharp.
4. Slide the O-Ring down until it is just above the opening the water comes out of at the bottom of the needle.
5. Make a cup of coffee with the My K-Cup.
6. My husband made a cup of coffee with the normal K-Cup and it did not push the O-Ring back up.
This solved my problem and I hope it works for you.
Customer Review: Makes unsatisfyingly weak coffee. Possible solutions? Summary: 1 Stars
This makes a very weak cup of coffee. The design is completely different from a k-cup, with the water flowing practically straight through the device and picking up very little flavor from the coffee grounds. I just scanned through 30 pages of reviews on this item and managed to root out a few possible things to try before we give up on it(which I really don't want to do because I can't stand using all of that plastic that can't be recycled).
1 - Take a used, disposable K-Cup and cut it to size so that it can drop into the bottom of the My K-Cup. This was described by another reviewer as: removing the foil cover from the disposable K-Cup; empty it and cut out the paper filter (don't worry about it being perfect around the top); cut off the rim around the top so that it can drop into the reusable My K-Cup. Basically, this slows down the water's ability to leave the My K-Cup to the speed of an actual K-Cup, allowing for the water to actually pick up flavor from the coffee grounds.
2 - Use coffee that finely ground and somewhat packed into the filter (after having placed the cut piece of the disposable K-cup in the bottom).
Here's hoping it works! Either way, you shouldn't have to go through all this effort and work-arounds to get a brand new item to work properly.
*EDIT* We did try this method and my husband is pretty pleased with the results. It made a significant difference in the strength of the coffee flavor. I'm not sure he thinks it's as nice as the prepackaged containers but it's a cheaper, more environmentally sound solution that he's happy with.
Customer Review: Here's a tip for stronger coffee Summary: 4 Stars
After reading many reviews about the problems with the My K-Cup and experimenting on my own, I have found an easy solution to the problem of weak coffee using this filter. As others have noted, the water goes through the My K-Cup way too fast as compared to the K-Cups. My solution was to take apart a K-Cup and use the outer plastic shell with the My K-Cup filter. Here's all you need to do:
Take a used K-Cup and cut the top foil off of a K-Cup. Cut the paper filter out of the K-Cup. It's okay not to cut it all the way off of the rim of the K-Cup because you will need to cut the top of the K-Cup (where it gets wider at the top). You need to cut the top of the K-Cup off because you need to fit the K-Cup shell into the My K-Cup holder. Once you slide the bottom shell of the K-Cup into the holder, you can add your coffee into the My K-Cup (tapping or gently pressing the coffee so that it is not loose inside the filter). Then place the My K-Cup filter into the holder and cover as normal. When brewing, the K-Cup shell surrounds the My K-Cup filter and slows down the water by making it pass through the punctured hole that the prepackaged K-Cup normally uses.
The great thing about this is that you can re-use the K-Cup shell that you cut apart over and over so once you have cut one apart you don't have to worry about it again- use the My K-Cup as you normally would.
I'm hoping Keurig will have figured this out in the near future and add a premade piece that is included the My K-Cup, but until then, I have found that this solves the problem of weak coffee.
Customer Review: Good Product but Needs This Tweak... Summary: 4 Stars
I only tried to use this filter since it was almost a no-cost item from the Amazon deals on the B40. I ran this thing through the paces only to discovered that the hot water overflowed the top of the filter cap which drained into the coffee mug causing the cup of coffee to be very weak...tea like. After studying reusable filter device's construction I ran down to Home Depot to find a gasket to place on the top of the filter cap. I found a 2" neoprene washer with a 5/8" hole did the trick of sealing the filter cap and stopping the water overflow. All you have to do is lay the washer on top of the filter cap then slowly let down the brewer head handle ensuring the water 'faucet' clears the 5/8" hole...also it helps if you dampen the top of the filter cap to help hold the washer in place. I do not recommend gluing or semi-permanently securing the washer. Clean the washer each time as you would the filter device.
Next is to find a coffee that brews well. I grind my own and found the color of the coffee looked better with the finer grinds. Just make sure you completely clean the reusable filter right after each use so not to let the coffee sit and lodge in its fine screen material.
My conclusion...look if I can afford to pay $100.00 for the coffee maker...I certainly should be able to afford to pay $0.50 a cup or less using the K-Cup brands. Perhaps one day I will find a coffee brand that brews well in this maker...until then...K-Cups is the way to go for me. Otherwise...go to the coffee shop and pay 5 - 6 times more per cup.
Hope this helps someone!
Customer Review: The best way to enjoy pod coffee. Summary: 5 Stars
I have the Breville pod coffee maker and after some experimentation have come up with a great cup-a-joe. I first tried some of the pods that came in the box but they tasted plasticky and flavorless. I even bought a few boxes of pods from Bed Bath & Beyond and had the same problem. A friend said they buy theirs thru the internet and have had no problem. My assumption is that mine were old and stale.
I then tried the "My K-Cup" that comes with the Breville using my Seattle's Best pre-ground Organic Breakfast Blend. I use the second smallest cup size, and am very pleased with the results. Each cup is fresh and hot as opposed to my drip coffee maker which made a great first cup but went downhill from there.
The next problem I had was given the optimal size-to-flavor ratio I need to make 3 cups to clear my morning fog. I now have 2 "My K-Cups" and am about to invest in 2 more. 3 for me and 1 for my husband's Dunkin' Donuts coffee (which he prefers brewed on the next size up). At night I fill the water reservoir prepare my K-Cups put 1 in the Breville and just pop the K-Cups in as needed. It may seem a pricey investment at first but in the long run will actually be cheaper, yet I still have the convenience of the pods. I then clean them after the morning rush is over.
As to the breakage many people are encountering, I suspect it's due to over-filling the filter. I use 1 level scoop and there is room for the grounds to swell without pushing against the top. Instead of packing the filter to get a stronger cup, you might try adjusting the cup size.
