Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: The technology of the Keurig with my own grounds? Brilliant! Summary: 4 Stars
I work for a VERY well known coffee chain (haha) and so I get a free pound of joe a week... obviously buying the k cups would be a silly waste of money. I love this machine but I hate the available coffee pods... fresh ground is the only way to go for my palette.
The Reusable filter, while not exactly durable, allows for some of the best coffee I've ever made. Even my tea drinking fiancee has turned in to a total coffee nerd since I perfected the use of this product. Success!
Anyway I found that when I grind my beans to a metal filter setting it works the best... this would be slightly finer than a french press grind. A good visual would be a texture only slightly finer than kosher salt.
Using 2 tablespoons, slightly packed down (or actually 3tbsp, in my case to counteract the weaker result with the coarse grind,) the resulting cup of coffee is bold, free of grounds, and has a lovely almost espresso-like crema at the top and minimal sludge at the bottom. I hate drip coffee because it's far to bitter and most of the volatile oils from the coffee are lost in the process.
Another good way to keep the flavor of the coffee is by putting your condiments at the bottom of the cup so the flavor gets locked in as soon as possible. Remember... the longer you let coffee sit, the more of those precious volatile oils are lost. If you like the taste of milk or sugar in your coffee, adding it to the coffee PRIOR to brewing so the coffee falls right in to it will help slow that acidic turnover down. (There's a reason baristas throw away any espresso shot more than 10-15 seconds old... it's because it turns into a black acidic extract!!!)
Customer Review: Not worth your money Summary: 2 Stars
I just purchased the Keurig B40 on Friday, and I'm returning it tomorrow, which is Monday. Here is why. I also purchased the reusable coffee filter, which I loved! I'm all about recycling! That being said, it makes the weakest cup of coffee I have (I think) ever had. I am so disappointed. I've been wanting one of these machines for so long, and I had a 30% off at Kohls and decided I was going to treat myself....well, it wasn't such a treat.
I have been using a purculating coffee maker that I bought through Walmart for apprxtly $45.00. It makes the BEST cup of coffee! The problem for me is tht since I purchased it, I can no longer have caffeinated coffee. So I set the purculator up at night for my husband's coffee and then, I have to make my coffee. Being I don't always have the time to make more coffee in the morning for myself, I tend to make a full pot of decaf for me, and refrigerate the rest and then microwave it in the morning!!! This is defeating the whole point of having a FRESH brewed cup of coffee in the morning. When Keurig came out I thought that, that would solve my problem. It did.... but now I'm compromising on taste, and I won't do that. It's bad enough I have compromised the caffeine; I won't compromise on the taste.
I do think the reason it tastes weak, is b/c it runs through the reusable filter too fast. But I did also try using the regular K-cup to see if it would be any stornger. It was slightly stronger, but NOTHamilton Beach 40616 Stainless-Steel 12-Cup Electric Percolator great tasting like my purculator! I think I'll stick to the oldie, but goodie addage!
Customer Review: Good enough for occasional use Summary: 4 Stars
I wanted to switch to a quality brewing system that provided some throwback to a few of my local favorites that are not available in the mass produced single serve filter market. As it turned out the Keurig ended up being a gift so my choice was made for me.
Although I had a friend tell me that this filter was useless I decided to try it for myself. This adapter works as advertised as long as you keep a few items in mind.
1. Do not buy a full bag of coffee unless you drink five or more cups a day. You don't realize how much coffee you waste until you drink it one brewed cup at a time.
2. Do not grind too fine (use medium) unless you enjoy some grit in your cup.
3. Do not pack your grinds to tightly. Find the type of grind and amount that works for your taste.
4. Most importantly, do not leave it unattended. I have to hold the bar down to ensure the top seal does not leak. Saves on paper towels.
5. (Optional) Remember to replace the filter accessory with the original to avoid spills when other members in the household turn it on to use for hot water. It will be your fault. That's what I've been told. :)
An improvement on this would be to add a seal on the screw-on top (O-Ring maybe) that acts like a, well, seal to lock the filter in place just like the foil does when punctured. This enhancement would garner this five stars.
I have also tried the re-use method by washing the K-Cup and adding a foil top. This works but is much more laborious than this filter. For those people complaining that you have to wash for every cup you can buy additional filters to remedy that problem. Enjoy your personal grind with this accessory.
Customer Review: If you like strong, bold coffee this is not for you... Summary: 2 Stars
Love the Keurig coffee maker and the K-Cups. Like so many other reviewers, I was hoping to make this more economical to use. After several attempts, different grinds, and varying amounts of coffee in the filter without satisfactory results, I decided to try the contents of a K-Cup. I opened an unused K-Cup, Tully's Italian Roast Extra Bold, and poured it into the little filter basket. Voila! Squirting water and grounds everywhere. Goes to show that Keurig does not want you substituting for the expensive little pre-made K-Cups. If you like your coffee light or weak, this may work for you. Otherwise, if you like rich, bold, strong coffee, this is not for you.
For the record, I DID remove the coffee maker insert before using the My K-Cup filter. The machine won't close unless you do. Filled the filter basket to the fill line with coffee, placed it in the housing, tightened the lid as tight as it would go, and popped it into the slot where the insert was. Even tried sliding down the little rubber gasket on the upper needle. There is no other way to do this the way it is made. Had limited success in placing a piece of plastic wrap on top of the filter housing before screwing on the lid. That should not be necessary, the thing should be made to work as-is. Maybe some of these filter units are defective, I don't know. I am quite sure it does not have a lot to do with people's gene pools or the learning curve.
If I can't take the coffee out of one of their pre-made k-cups and successfully make a cup with that in the filter basket, how in the world can I make a decent cup of coffee with any other coffee?
Customer Review: No troubles at all! Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this at the same time we bought our Special Edition Keurig coffee maker. We had previously owned a messy pod brewer, so we decided to use them up by cutting open the pods and pouring the grinds into this filter instead. Note that the instructions specifically say not to put a pod in the filter, but they're talking about a full pod -- there are no problems if you cut open the pod and pour the grinds into the filter.
We haven't had any issues with weak coffee. We've actually found that the coffee from the My K-Cup is stronger than the coffee we used to brew through the pod in our old coffee maker. We've had some minor water leaking a couple of times (maybe a teaspoon of water at most), but that seems to happen less often if we're really careful not to tap down the grinds at all.
On a somewhat unrelated note, we're quickly becoming coffee snobs -- we've realized that the coffee we used to drink from the pods is absolutely disgusting compared to the coffee options we have with the K-Cups!
When I first tried it, I was a little disappointed in the mess inside the filter, but it was actually really easy to rinse out in the sink. I was also impressed at how little it dripped.
The only reason why I don't give it 5 stars is because the coffee maker ends up spitting the water a bit at the very end of the brew when using this filter, sometimes getting a few drops of coffee on my kitchen counter. But overall, that's worth it for the ability to save money and the environment. We'll still be frequent K-Cup users, but the filter allows us to have limitless options for coffee.
