Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: Disappointing Summary: 2 Stars
I actually bought the "My K-Cup" before I received the brewer because my sister had used it when I was visiting her and seemed to have no problem.
Not so for me.
It is a little inconvenient to take out the holder in order to use the "My K-Cup", but not enough so that I would complain.
I filled it about 3/4 full and popped it in...no problem. Then, as the water shot through, the K-cup leaked hot water all over the counter and brewed a very weak 1/2 cup of coffee.
Certain that I had done something wrong, I tried again and got the same results. The coffee was so weak I couldn't drink it and tossed it out.
I ran the K-cup without coffee grounds and it seemed to work pretty well, so I assume that the grounds are preventing the water from flowing through the cup, leaking out over the top instead.
I thought that the filter may be too fine for my home ground coffee and poked several extra holes in it. That helped a little, but it still was leaking a considerable amount and too weak.
Then I drilled tiny holes in the plastic bottom to see if that would help and it did. I still only get half a cup, but it is drinkable.
I think the reason that my sister had little trouble was that her coffee was a medium grind from the store. I grind my own and it always seems that the grind is not consistent, some is very fine and some course, when I try a medium grind. It may be operator error, but this has been true with every grinder I have owned, especially if I am trying to grind just enough for one cup.
I really like the brewer and the K-Cups, but I like my own personal blends as well as the enconomy of using my own coffee instead of the K-Cups.
I was very disappointed that the maker of the brewer did not have a better product than this to offer.
I have ordered some other knock-off filters and I hope one of them works better.
Until I get them, I will limp along with this.
Customer Review: My K-Cup Review Summary: 3 Stars
Just received the Keurig Elite Coffee machine for Christmas and love it. But I wanted to be able to use my own coffee (and save money) so I purchased the My K-Cup reusable filter. Was very disappointed that the coffee was weak, not hot and leaked water. After reading the reviews I tried a combination of things and found I can get a hot, fairly strong cup of coffee. I took V. Germano's advice and cut down a used k-cup which slows down the water passing thru the coffee to get the full flavor. I also found that the filter assembly is too loose (when in place poke your finger in from the bottom, lid down on the coffee machine, you can feel the play in the filter housing) so I found a rubber washer (3/4 inch Outside diameter x 1/4 inch Inside diameter x 1/8 inch thick) in my tool kit and placed this in the recess on the top cover of the reusable filter adaptor. This rubber washer fits perfectly, takes up the excess play and thereby causes a nice seal between the filter top cover and the water spout on the coffee machine (no need to pull down the rubber gasket on the sharp water spout), alas no more water leaking! You should be able to find a washer like this in any hardware store. One last comment concerning overtightening, if you turn the filter assembly upside down (please don't do this with coffee in the filter basket) you will see three stops on the filter housing body (put the cover on, without the filter basket, and turn, you will see how it operates), these provide a stopping point when tightening the filter top cover. Without the filter in place the cover easily stops on these stops, but with the filter in place it is harder to turn. You have to be careful not to go past the stops or you will probably break the housing/cover assembly.
Parting thoughts, great coffee machine, but the My K-Cup reusable filter needs work to operate properly. I would think the engineers at Keurig would have figured this out by now.
Customer Review: Update - Finally fixed spraying problem. Summary: 2 Stars
(Edit of previous notes below)
Fixed the spraying problem. I found out on another board that the rubber gasket that surrounds the upper plunger (which injects water into basket or K-cup) was up too high. Simply reach up (don't get stabbed on the sharp tube) and pull the gasket down quite far. When you pull down the lever to brew, it will reseat itself tightly around the top of the plastic K-cup and the spray is fully eliminated. Now with that said, I brewed two ways, the first with the modified spent K-cup installed as described in several posts on this board and secondly, without it. Without it, the brew is noticeably weaker, but not watered down. IT comes out in a larger stream than with the modified K-cup installed in it, which slows down the stream and creates a better brew. I which Keurig would make the note about the plunger gasket, if they did, it is not noticeable on the instructions. It is important to note still that I have had no brewing issues on the larger machine at home.
Original Post....
My wife and I use one of the premium Keurig brewers at home (I forget the model, but it is the the one you can program the time and has three size options and is about 2 years old) and it works PERFECT with the K-Cup. However, I just purchased the Elite for my office and it works terrible and I get the spraying and dilution everybody talks about. It simply does not work with this model.
I have read the reviews and no surprise they are all over the place as they are being used on different machines. Had I known this, I would have bought the same one I have at home for the office, although it would have been overkill. I'm just keeping my teeth clenched to filter out the grinds!
Keep this in mind when buying the machine on wanting to use the K-Cup. I guess I will need to try the modification everybody is doing, which is freaking ridiculous if you ask me.
Customer Review: Easy to Use; Learn Some Tricks for Better Coffee Summary: 5 Stars
I am very pleased with my Keurig My K-Cupt Reusable Coffee Filter. The ability to make coffee from my own beans not only saves money and waste but it also allows for more variety on the coffee I make. Using the My K-Cup Filter is simple. You remove the assembly from the pod door and drop the machine-washable filter assembly in. Fill the coffee filter up with grounds. Drop it in just like you would a pod, and then screw on the included lid. Then brew and enjoy.
Using your own beans compared to the self-contained K-Cups is obviously a little more messy and time consuming. I recommend filling the filter over the sink because inevitably a few grounds will fall out. Cleaning it is simple; just shake out the grounds and then rinse it quickly in the sink and its ready to go again. Just be aware of the inevitable potential for messiness and you won't be disappointed.
Also, the filter has the potential to make a weak cup of coffee. The filter can hold about 2.5 tablespoons of coffee grounds. There are markings on it for 1 and 2 tablespoons. If you fill it up to either of those locations, the coffee will be pretty weak. This is fine if, like my dad, you like weak coffee. However, if, like me, you like your coffee strong, you're gonna have to fill it all the way to the top. The instructions say not to compact the coffee into the filter; however, I recommend that you make sure that the coffee is nice and snug and to the top. I press it down pretty good with the spoon. Basically, if you don't have it filled to the top, the water leaks around the side before it goes through the beans and it seriously dilutes down your coffee. But if you do it right, you'll easily get a pretty strong and good-tasting cup of coffee.
The Keurig M K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter does what it advertises: It allows you to use your Keurig brewer on your own beans...and it does it pretty well.
Customer Review: Use it RIGHT and it works wonderfully Summary: 5 Stars
I have read all the complaining about this product but I opted to buy it and try it anyway. I have found that it makes a fantastic (and strong if used properly) cup of coffee, that tastes great. It's easy to use and clean. I don't know what other people are doing to break it or clog it, so here is what I do to make this function well.
1) Use drip grind coffee, not espresso grind. Espresso grind will clog the mesh and you don't really need it for a good cup of coffee. Also, have your coffee ground in store or use a burr grinder. Blade grinders (spice grinders) only produce uneven grinds, making some tiny espresso grind like particles that can clog your filter.
2) Follow the manufacturer instructions. This means don't over fill it and don't pack the grounds into the basket. The gray lid is not a true screw top, and you don't need to tighten it way down, just a little to keep it in place.
3) To keep from making a mess, use a tablespoon scoop over a tupperware of coffee ground. I always store coffee in airtight container in the dark for the highest quality. Since I now have the coffee ground in store, it is the best way to keep it fresh.
4) To remove the K-cup holder in the machine, push it up from the bottom. I read some review by someone complaining about the danger of the sharp knife inside and how he mangled his hand. Don't stick your finger in there. It even tells you that on your machine.
5) Brew a medium or smaller cup if you like strong coffee. This is something I noticed with the K-cups in general. The more you want to brew, the weaker it gets. To fill a large coffee mug or a travel mug, I always brew a medium and a small cup using two k-cups. I do that with the my-cup also.
I really like my brewer and my "My-cup". To me, and I am a total coffee snob, it makes a really great cup of coffee.
