Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee FilterCustomer Review: Cost vs effort - are you really saving anything? Summary: 2 Stars
First, I'd like to state that I did not buy this product. It came packaged with my Keurig B70. That being stated, having used it I could not recommend spending money on this product.
Wanting to test and compare the product (without spending great amounts of $$ for scientific comparison LOL) I took one of the French Roast k-cups and compared it with my favorite pre-ground French Roast made with the My K-Cup. The K-cup was better. The My K-Cup was weaker and less rich. Fair comparisson? Maybe, maybe not. It wasn't the same brand and opening the k-cup and comparing the grind the coffee I used in the My K-Cup was a bit coarser. I reground it a bit finer and that helped a BIT but not enough. Why? I thought it was the coffee so I sacrificed a new k-cup and used that in My K-Cup but it didn't make much of a difference. Again why? Without timing flow rates etc. it just seemed that the My K-Cup allowed the water to pass more quickly or freely than a standard k-cup. It SEEMED to brew faster.
The opening at the bottom of My K-Cup is bigger than the hole punched in the k-cup. Yes, the spout on both is the same but with My K-Cup the water passed through the mesh filter and easily flows out the spout. With a k-cup there is a paper filter in the plastic cup and it looks like the filter is slightly shorter than the plastic cup so there's a space between the bottom of the filter and the cup. There has to be else the hole punched in the bottom would go through the filter too. Now the water is forced out through that hole. Observationally, it looks like the water would flow slower through the k-cup's little hole than through just the My K-Cup's mesh filter.
I tested this theory. I took a used k-cup peeled off the foil top and took out the coffee and filter. I then put it into My K-Cup but it was too tall. I trimmed a bit off the rim until it fit snuggly, put it into the My K-Cup holder, put in the mesh filter and filled it with coffee. Ah, a noticeable difference!! Still, not great but drinkable.
I started thinking. So, I took out a paper filter from a k-cup and reassembled my Frankenstein holder. First I put the trimmed plastic cup in the holder, then the paper filter, then the mesh filter and some non-reground coffee in the contraption and brewed. This seemed very close or the same as a k-cup!!! Ah, but how close?
Well... I took the foil off a used k-cup, washed out the grounds filled with the same non-reground coffee and covered with a small piece of aluminum foil and brewed. I couldn't tell the difference. Maybe this k-cup was actually a bit less strong/rich than my modified My K-Cup.
Some thoughts. I like strong rich coffee. If you like weaker coffee or more mild than the My K-Cup may work for you as is, but you might have to switch to the next darker roast or use a finer ground coffee is your preferred roast. You might not either and you will be happy. Who knows but you.
Cleanup is not as they say a breeze. Wet grounds seem to stick to the bottom and sides of the filter basket and I had to resort to the spray nozzle on my sink to get them all out. It's not like simply dumping a filter into the garbage. Dumping them in your sink probably isn't a good idea if you don't have city sewage either.
Filling the My K-cup isn't as convenient as it should be. Filling the basket is a breeze and then you simply put it into the holder (AFTER you take out the original holder and put the My K-cup hold into your brewer) but now you have put the lid on which requires taking the holder out so you can twist the lid on. It would have been nice to have a base (simple tube) that you could put the holder in so it stood up on your counter top. A cut down paper towel tube works ok though.
In all for me this seems like too much work and I'm well known to those that know me as one cheap old fella. I'd rather spend the $0.50 per k-cup than mess with this. Actually, I'd rather save my k-cups and reuse them as described above than mess with the My K-cup. How much are you saving using 1-2 gallons of water to wash this thing out each time? No, I'll sit down while watching t.v. and use my saved k-cups to "roll my own" and put them in a Tupperware container in the fridge. If you use them in a week they should be fresh still. Heck, how many people use a package of coffee (without brewing a pot at a time) in a week?
What would make this system better would be small filters to fit inside the basket. MUCH easier to clean up.
For me I love getting up in the morning, stumbling to the coffee maker (ok I don't like the getting up or stumbling) popping a pod in and hitting brew. Ah fresh coffee. Mucking around with this thing with sleep still in my eyes is my idea of purgatory in the morning. No thank you. To MUCH fuss and muss.
Hope this helps someone.
Feel free to commment or ask questions.
