Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Keurig B70 Platinum Brewing SystemCustomer Review: Barista in a box Summary: 5 Stars
We have owned our Keurig B70 for 21 months. It has performed like a champ. I turned my folks onto it, and theirs has worked perfectly, as well. We brew about 6-10 cups of coffee every day over the course of the day and my wife and I drink coffee at different times, so a drip coffee maker just didn't work for us. We use large mugs and get one 12oz and one 4oz brew from each k-cup, so 16oz at a time. The coffee is always piping hot, even when mixed with cold half/half or heavy cream, and depending on which k-cup brand/type the coffee can be mild to very strong even with 16oz from a single k-cup. Because we love it, we put up with the fact that ours is somewhat louder than usual and tends to vibrate more than usual. We actually have placed it on a cut to size vibration absorbing mat, since we have granite counter tops, which accentuate the vibration. Adding the mat really helped settle it down. For the first 14 months we had a lot of scale buildup and I found that, simply running white vinegar through the machine(30-60oz of vinegar/water at a time) would clean it out, I only had to do it twice and the scale never affected performance. Based on that, I would say it is very low maintenance even with bad water. I can't imagine going back to filters, grounds, and all the cleaning of a traditional coffee maker again. Some may complain that they don't like the coffee(there are some k-cups I find rather displeasing myself). I have had better cups of coffee from an espresso machine(Americano) with a skilled Barista, however, I think the coffee tastes very good and I am a little particular. There is quite a large selection available and if you shop during sales you can get the k-cups for as little as .20-.40 each or from Keurig direct for as little as .47 per k-cup at regular pricing with membership(free shipping factored in). The speed and convenience has saved us many stops at Starbucks or their ilk and no doubt our keurig has paid for itself several times over.
Customer Review: Fantastic purchase! Exceeds expectations. Summary: 5 Stars
My wife actually came up with the idea of buying one of these machines. We just had our second child and a quick, easy way to brew up a cup of coffee became a necessity.
We had a couple of hundred dollars of credit on Amazon and settled on this model. I am not sure why amazon has suspended sales of this product because we received it very quickly, and it was everything that was advertised.
So a few key things to note.... This is not a noisy machine. It is very quiet. It has multiple cup sizes, and I am able to easily fill up my einstein brothers travel mug. I am loving saving the $1.50 a day I used to spend, and in getting better coffee.
the coffee selection is great. I also bought the Aloha Island Coffee variety pack with K cup adapter. This adapter is great in that it will allow you to use Tassimo coffee pads with your Kcup machine. I really love Kona coffee so this was a must have for me (and I recommend their coffee as well, head and tails above the others).
Another great feature that I was unaware of when I purchased this, but use constantly now is the iced coffee feature. McDonalds charges $3.50 for a iced mocha. I have watched their machine make it at the store and you can make your own for pennies (crushed ice, milk, some chocolate syrup, and then a k pod on the iced coffee setting. Stir and enjoy). I mean, it is a nearly identical drink, and I can make one anytime. Honestly, for me it is the best feature of the machine.
So far no problems. The machine has auto on off, cool blue backlight, is so easy to use and quiet. The pods are relatively inexpensive (you can pick 18 packs up at Bed, Bath and Beyond for about $10, or buy 50 packs on amazon for $20 - 25). The most work you have to do with this machine is fill the reservoir up with water.
I highly recommend this product for purchase. If you are in the market for a k cup machine and can afford to go higher end, this is the one to buy.
Customer Review: exceeds expectations Summary: 5 Stars
I'll admit, I was skeptical of the one-cup brewer. I've been a huge fan of the thermal carafe for years. My Cuisinart stopped performing well (the brew became bland and water temperature decreased to slightly more than warm vs. hot). I had only had this pot for a bit over a year.
I held off buying something new and went with the french press. That was really good coffee, but the mess was crazy and, of course, after the first cup, the coffee sat cold.
I finally broke down and purchased the Keurig B70 about a month ago. Best decision for this avid coffee drinker. Cup after cup of fresh brewed coffee...in seconds. I especially enjoy the large water reservoir. My husband and I start our day at different times. The second person up doesn't wake to cold brew anymore. I also like that, when on occasion I want flavored coffee (which my husband hates), I am able to produce it for myself.
I've used this machine to give me hot water for tea (though they sell k-cup teas, I prefer my Republic of Tea selections) and the results are quick and easy. The machine is so easy to use, my 9 year old is able to give himself a hot shot of water for oatmeal...An added bonus I didn't count on!
So far, very pleased with this purchase. I agree with the reviewer that stated the machine is a bit on the loud side when heating water, but it < 30 seconds and not all that much louder than a brewing drip coffee maker.
Cleaning the Keurig is a cinch. The removable drip tray is a great feature.
I'm happy I "paid up" for this model. In this house, we have all different sized cups and drink all different types of hot beverages. Espresso is not out of the question when my Dad arrives. The five cup choices and auto on/off were key features in my decision.
I've been exceptionally happy with this purchase, so much so, I just ordered the same one for my mom.
Customer Review: I love this machine - But you really shouldn't buy it Summary: 1 Stars
My husband I loved this machine when we first got it. We purchased all types of tea, coffee, iced tea, and hot cocoa to use, and were so pleased at the enormous amount of selection in k-cups. Our previous one-cup brewer had such a limited variety of coffee and tea, so the variety of items offered in k-cups is fantastic.
If you've read the other one star reviews, you already know what I'm going to tell you. After about a month of use, the machine no longer works. It gets ready to brew and then turns off. Same problem as everyone else. My husband has called customer service twice. This morning he told the customer service rep he would hold until a Technician is available since no on called him back after his first call. Yes, they truly tell you they will call you back. I have never encountered this type of 'service' from a customer service group. I understand having business hours, or having long wait times so the offer of a return call if you prefer not to wait; but a return call as a standard course of action? Really why bother, just call yourself the 'Report your machine not working hotline.'
What bothers me the most is that it appears this problem has been one that has existed for a while, yet Keurig has done nothing about it. Certainly points to the fact that they must be making all of their money on the k-cups, not the units themselves.
So my husband is off to Costco to return the machine and get a new one. After reading all these reviews (which I wish I had read BEFORE buying the machine) my only hope is that the unit will last until we've used up all the k-cups we have.
Save yourself a lot of trouble, do not buy the B70 or B77 model. If Keurig makes a new machine without the inherent problem in these models, I will definitely be on board to give it another try. Until then, I cannot give this machine more than 1 star.
Customer Review: Big Price in Little Flavor Summary: 2 Stars
I hope Kurt Russel doesn't sue me for that title.
I decided to take the leap into pod brewing systems with this as I received a gift certificate to help with this purchase along with several other discounts. I think I went out of pocket $90 and I still feel cheated.
The basic problem is that there are not enough grounds in the pods- even the pod that allows you to add your own grounds. Instead of K-Cups they should have said K-Scoops as the amount of coffee in the pods is FAR too miniscule to have much flavor impact on the water. I ran with the recommended Dark Magic and Sumatra "Extra Bold" blends, but even they fell way short. I tried to make this work for about a month and then gave up on it.
If you're looking for a cool blue night light that makes instant hot water from a pressurized resevoir (PV=nRT) then this might be for you. If you're looking for strong coffee look elsewhere. If you like coffee-flavored water then this is probably for you.
I'm actually brewing manually with a funnel (my organic chemistry Bodum glass vessel broke- I think I've broken EVERY piece of Bodum glass I've ever owned), a gold cone filter (left over from the $50 Bodum MDC- Manual Drip Coffee-maker), and a Thermos 12 oz stainless steel cup (The Holy Grail of coffee cups, which reminds me...I need to buy another pair of these gems).
This all started with my "voluntary" recall of the 8 cup Starbucks Barista brewer. If I had it to do over again I would NEVER have turned in the Barista. It made great coffee ALL the time and I could overbrew if I wanted to and have coffee soup. Stupid is as stupid does. I think I'm going to buy a Black and Decker Smart Brew and just make 1 cup at a time (like I do now) so I don't have to try and find another thermal maker as I haven't found one yet that hasn't been panned in the reviews.
