Customer Review: Rather cheep and not very well designed

I like coffee and recieved one as a gift. I have used this now for a little while and will probably stop once the coffee pods run out. It is VERY POORLY designed.
When totally dry it is possible to guess how much water to put in the top by the not-obvious, far to clever dicky, not accurate water gauge. If the front 'brew' lever is not fully down when you pour the water in the top it flows into the hidden heating container at which point you have no idea how much water is in it or not. From that point you are guessing. I thought, I will not make that mistake again, but have managed to repeat it several times because there is no direct indicator if the brew lever is far enough down to stop the water leaking through prematurely.
It spills any extra water into the plastic base of the unit, which you have to empty regularly or it floods the table. To help tell when the plastic overflow pan is filling up there is the coffee maker equivalent of a fishing float, located behind the cup stand on the base, which, if closely observed lets you know it will soon spill over if not emptied. There is no indicator light or beep to warn you of an imminent overflow.
You cannot put more water than you need for the one cup in the system. You have to do each cup in turn, including putting the water in for each. BUT if you under-fill you get a short cup and cannot add a little more, and if you over fill it runs into the catchment pan in the base.
The buttons for on, indicator for fill water, and brew are in the wrong order, unless you regularly read from bottom to top.
To figure out if you need to put water in, it does not sense the amount of water, just if you have opened the water fill lid or not. So if you put water in first, then switch on, it assumes you have not put water in, prompting you to put the water in again, which as you now know, if you do it will then spill into the base. So just open and close the water door a second time, then lift and close the 'brew' lever again, and then the dumb unit will be happy and start.
Once it does start a brew it takes about two minutes. After brewing electric pot does shut off but does not beep to tell you it is finished, to remind you to collect your cup, which it will not keep warm. Even my $35 microwave beeps when finished.
You can only put small and standard sized coffee cups under the brewer. If you have a large coffee mug forget it.
In most coffee makers the volume of the water container is matched to the volume of the coffee pot. Since this system does not have a coffee pot and the coffee goes directly into the cup, and since it does not have the ability to measure the correct volume of water, you NEED to put exactly the right amount of water in. If you put in the water for a large cup but only put a small cup on the base, the excess is splattered all about and drips into the pan in the base.
I suggest you get the largest coffee mug you can fit in the device and only use that one mug with the system. You can use your coffee mug for measuring the water before filling the top, so you know you are getting exactly the right amount.
You can swap out the holder for the K-Cup's with a wire basket that can take your own coffee, (and save you a bunch of money) but it is not as simple as changing the cup. You have to grapple with the unit, press up and out the k-cup holder, which does not snap out easily, and then put in the new gray basket holder. To switch back go through the same parts changing again. (Being careful, as the instructions warn, not to hurt your self on the sharp needles.)
If you do use the stainless coffee filter basket with your own coffee, you will need to dissemble the gray three part holder for cleaning. Like everything else it does not come apart by twisting or having a thread, but uses cheep plastic snaps that have to be forced, just like the plastic snaps you have to force when removing the K-cup holder.
After two decades of making personal one cup coffee makers this device delivers in it's ability to use the expensive K-cups but fails when it comes to usability, simplicity and technical finesse.
While it seems simple, in my distracted early morning pre-coffee state, this device has caused me to say "bother" more times than is necessary because I did not do the right steps in the right order or did not hold the brew lever down when putting the water in.
I would not buy one for a friend. You can probably purchase mine at my yard sale later in the year.
