Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Kalorik 200-Watt Electric Meat Slicer with 7.5" BladeCustomer Review: Unless you find it an attractive shelf decoration, don't buy it Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this product to replace a Waring PRO that was terrible. While better than the Waring, the Kalorik is unacceptably bad.
Good features:
* the suction cups on the bottom do hold
Problematic features:
* the hand guard does not hold the object being sliced in place. it is poorly crafted, and does not allow for a tight grip. coupled with that is a shelf that also has no grip. result: when you pull back the meat after a couple of slices, when the shelf has gotten a bit lubricated from fat or whatever, the main bulk of the unsliced meat stays on the blade, and the shelf comes back empty. you have to turn off the unit, reseat the meat, and try again.
* the guard does not hold the meat evenly. result: the profile of the unsliced meat has a distinct curve because the part that is on the shelf (so to speak) does not get cut.
* removal of the blade demands a large screwdriver. the manual claims that a coin will do it; perhaps only a Euro coin -- US currency fails. putting the blade back on is also non-trivial, making cleanup a pain (despite one reviewer's claim that it was a breeze).
* there were several components that fell off. the manual is incomplete, so I have not been able to determine whether they were packing material and *should* have come off, or if they are a part of the working slicer and should *not* have come off. in particular, there was a small rubber dam at the top of the slicer whose presence stopped the blade setting from getting to below about 1cm. since this was a danger in handling the machine for cleaning and storage, I determined it must be packaging. then there was a plastic hoop behind the blade that popped out when I removed the blade for cleaning. since there was no way to make it stay in place while I was returning the blade to position, I determined it, too, must be packaging. the slicer behaved neither better nor worse without the hoop, and the manual made no reference to it whatsoever.
For those who purchase the item from Amazon: make sure you conduct all your testing of your unit quickly because if it takes you more than a month to figure out that the problem is with the thing itself, not with your lack of expertise in using it, you're stuck with the thing. Better yet, don't buy it at all and you won't have to worry about returning it.
