Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jura-Capresso 13214 Impressa Z5 Automatic Coffee CenterCustomer Review: Please try another brand! Summary: 1 Stars
I've waited three years before writing a review. I bought this elsewhere. This is my first product review. It's a bit long, but felt I should share in detail since we are talking about spending upwards of $2000+! I don't want anyone to go through what I am experiencing. If you're in the market for a superautomatic, please look elsewhere! Avoid any Jura-Capressa products because they will hold you hostage to their repair/service policy: You will have to send in your machine for any type of service, no matter how small/minor. If you agree, then customer service is more than happy to bill you (when out of warranty). Forget about getting them to sell you parts, they won't even sell to experience expresso machine shops/service centers! This alone is enough reason to shop for another brand. If I was to actually send in my Z5 for every issue to date, I could of bought three new machines by now. The problems has not gone away; I've learn to fix it myself!
#1: Above service/parts policy. If it is under warranty, beware of them switching your machine on you. This has happen to me twice. You will basically inherit someone elses problem machine.
#2: Above is important because the machine will need frequent servicing. Especially because of the dreaded "error 8" message. Jura actually reccomends you stick your fingers into the machine to do a "manual" cleaning! In actuality, the procedure will only work for three to fours cups. Eventually it won't work at all and cause a host of other issues. The problem is the brew-group itself, it gets "gunked" up because the cleaning cycles don't work as intended. Again! Capressa does not want you to access the internals of their products. They actually reserve the right to refuse service for your machine if they "suspect" you worked on it, regardless of the fact, that it's your machine! Imagine any automobile company saying they won't allow service (by anyone) or get parts because you look under the hood! The fix is to remove the brew-group and wash thoroughly and re-lubricate. Even then, this is good for a couple weeks. So look for a brand with a accessable, removable brew-group.
#3: Yes it is "one-button" convenience but you will have to also stand around for cleaning, refilling, emptying drip/grind tray, troubleshooting, etc. God forbid, you have to decacify: this takes minimum 1hr+. with you on standby to empty bins, push buttons, etc.! It would probably be quicker using a semi-automatic (which is what I returned to). Also, the frothing attachment does work, but it also needs super amount of cleaning/attention. It's probably the same with all superautomatics, but the tubing/nozzles/tank can get nasty! I noticed if it is not immaculately clean, when trying to dispense steam/milk, it will actually shoot steam into your milk container..not good for obvious reasons. I now add additional steps and time of first steaming into empty container before attaching milk tubing.
#4: I am an engineer by trade, so when I look inside the unit, I was somewhat sad to see plastic used for some very high use/stressed parts and horrified to find substandard OEM silicone tubing. These in opinion will not last (design to fail!). I've recently replaced all the tubing (main cause of the mystery leaks everyone writes about) after having endured three separate rupture/leaks. Do you think Jura-Capressa was willing to send me $5.00 worth of tubing? nope: "send it in for repairs" is the standard reply! Customer rep. actually hung-up on me when I insist I was not about to spend $200+ shipping for a piece of cheap tubing. Rep. claim factory will also perform "necessary" detailed refurb./cleaning, eventhough I already did that: basically they will swap yours with another "refurbished" machine...don't fall for it!
#5: It's downright unreliable. In three years, I might of gotten a total of six months use where it did not give me some problem or another. At best I had for one time only, three weeks of continous problem free use. The first year was a bust, spent most of it sending unit back and forth to Capressa.
FYI: I only make two, triple shot expresso's and froth milk separately each day. Not an excessive amount of usage at all. I can only imagine the headache if used more or in an office-setting..ouch!
#6: The machine likes to go through a fair amount of "cleaning" procedures before and after each use. Note: cleaning tablets, filters, decalcifying liquid, etc. are expensive and you will go through a fair amount of it. Calling customer support will (pointlessly) further deplete your supply.
To be clear, I think the concept of superautomtics are great and even for the Z5, when it did "work", it was great! But at $2000+, it should be headache and hassel free! I can go on with all kinds of glitches/issues but above are the major annoyances. I can not say what other brands are better, but I can say: "stay away from all Jura-Capressa products!".
Look for a brand that allows for outside servicing, longer warranty, parts availability and respectful customer service (asking too much?)
Look for a machine that allows for easy brew-group removal (this is a must), better cleaning cycles and durability in materials.
Best advice: if in the market for superautomatic, make sure test-drive in person and insist vendor makes you continuos shots of expresso on the medium/fine grind setting (go through a whole bag of beans) and keep close eye on how it performs...don't rely on one or two demo cups!
I hope this was helpful.
