Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Joyce Chen 51-0662 Saladacco Spiral Slicer, WhiteCustomer Review: Sorry everyone else seems to have had a problem with this gadget,,,, Summary: 4 Stars
I bought mine several years ago at Zabars in NYC. Like lots of stuff in a small NYC apartment kitchen, mine got placed in back of a kitchen cabinet and I seemed to forget that I had it, although I really wanted & intended to use it. I just got some really beautiful zucchini from the farmer's market yesterday and remembered the gadget & decided to try the thing tonight. It worked terrifically for me. I was so delighted with the angelhair pasta like strands that sauted beautifully in some olive oil and garlic. I decided I must get one of these for my Mum who loves to cook and is quite a fine chef. Upon arriving here at Amazon I was really surprised how poorly it was reviewed. I don't know yet if I was simply lucky or what. I will need to remember to use it regularly and find out if I will end up joining the majority here. Thus far, I am delighted with the results I achieved with it tonight. I regret that others didn't have the same success with it.
Customer Review: Amazing for exactly one thing... Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my Saladacco for a couple years and pull it out every summer when it's too hot to boil pasta and zuchini is in season. I use it for exactly one thing: making great angel-hair (or thinner) "pasta" from zuchini. I have to agree with all of the reviews here:
1. It is cheap feeling.
2. You have to lop off the ends of the zuchini to make sections about 3.5" long.
3. The zuchini has to be ripe but not overly ripe.
4. The zuchini has to be straight (for best results).
5. You waste about 1/2" of the zuchini each pass.
6. The device is challenging to operate.
But all that said, it produces something that I've never seen come out of any other device. And that something has amazed many people - a fresh, light, "live" angel-hair pasta with no heat that even an insulin-dependent diabetic can eat.
It's probably not for everyone but it's one of my favorite kitchen appliances.
Customer Review: The Spiralizer actually works great! Summary: 5 Stars
I didn't read the reviews until *after* I ordered the Spiralizer. At first I was worried because of all the negative responses. I decided I'd just keep it because it's such a hassle to send it back.
Well I used it today for the first time with a beet and I didn't expect much but was SO PLEASED! I'm glad I didn't read the reveiws *before* I bought it. I can't imagine what the people who don't like it are doing with it? I'm wondering if those who don't like it are kitchen savvy at all. Please don't take that as condescending. I don't mean it that way.
The Spiralizer was easy to use! I cut the beet just like the instructions said to and got the most beautiful thin strands of beet! My salad was beautiful! I can't wait to make spaghetti out of zucchini!
Very, very pleased. :)
Customer Review: Product Changed By Manufacturer - Not what it used to be Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased a Joyce Chen Spiral Slicer last year and loved it for making wonderful angel hair "pasta" from zucchini, in fact I loved this gadget so much I recently bought six more to give as gifts to family and friends. Was then very upset when I opened one of the "new" slicers and tried to use it only to discover that the manufacturer had changed the unit and replaced the metal shredding blade with a plastic "blade". I believe they may have had liability concerns about the sharpness of the metal blade but the problem with plastic "blade" is that it isn't sharp enough and just makes mush instead of the lovely "pasta" it used to make. I tried it several times using very firm zucchini and it was a mess each time. I wish they'd go back to the old model since this one just doesn't work.
Customer Review: So bad driven me to write a review Summary: 1 Stars
I guess if all you ever want to spiralize is zucchini your OK, partly. I was very excited to get this to unyuckify my raw food dinners. First night I cut up my zucchini, used it without trouble and had a great set of noodles. Then I put the second piece in. A piece without skin on the top and all this thing did was make circles in the top of the zucchini, didn't spin it at all. A bit disappointing but still had a plate of noodles from half a zucchini. Next night I got a little crazy, tried a piece of butternut squash. This thing totally failed AND the plastic grippers that are supposed to hold the veggie BROKE OFF so now the whole top is useless and I have to spin my zucchini by hand until I replace it with a unit that works. Place your expectation for a good product elsewhere.
