Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jokari Soda Dispenser, 2 unitsCustomer Review: Apparently inspired by NASA, apparently built by China. Summary: 1 Stars
In a nutshell this is a horrible product with horrible support.
I carbonate my own sodas, mainly because I like to control my Brix ratio and use pure cane sugar without having to buy product from Mexico. I also enjoy my sodas with slightly more carbonation than store bought. So when I saw that this works best with "slightly over-carbonated drinks" I though I would give it a go.
My first complaint would have to be the appalling directions. They tell you to pour out the first glass which affects the headspace, but yet they fail to tell you how much headspace. I have my own soda fountain so all my glasses are either 20oz or 16oz Libbey soda glasses. Some folks however may prefer to drink out of 12oz or even 8oz tumblers. Then it tells you to "gently" shake the bottle, a term which leaves much to the imagination for most folks.
My second complaint would be the support offered by the company. First they have a video on their website that drones on and on about how NASA helped them design this bottle etc. Yet in the video they do not show how much headspace to create or even how "gently" to shake it. Furthermore, when he finally does dispense some at the end of the video you can see it is a frothy stream meaning its foamy which ultimately leads to flat soda. So I figure I would contact them directly and get support. Unfortunately, there is no such thing. I tried contacting them by phone only to get someone I could hardly understand and could not answer my simple questions. I then contacted them via their website, hoping that language barriers would be removed from the equation. I mentioned to them I would be returning the product unless they were able to help. I received no response at all.
My third complaint would have to be the product itself. A 2 liter bottle of soda tries to create an equilibrium with carbonation. Two things help to keep the CO2 in solution, keeping it cold and not disturbing it by shaking it etc. Keeping it in the fridge helps maintain the cold requirement obviously, but everytime you shake a 2 liter bottle you are giving the CO2 the opportunity to move out of solution and into the headspace, this is why the more empty a 2 liter bottle is the faster it can flat. Now I did find some ways to dispense the soda with the least amount of foam as possible. First I would over-carbonate it by 5 pounds more than I usually did. And then instead of shaking "gently" I would just squeez the top of the bottle where the dome is as I dispensed it. That would provide the best pour I could manage from the device. I already over-carbonate my soda because I like it that way. However, adding 5 more pounds would make the first few glasses more carbonated than I like. This was not an acceptable solution.
My fourth complaint would be the dispensed soda. It is a very fickle and depending on how much headspace you have plus how much CO2 you have already lost, that ultimately determines the taste of the glass you dispense. Nothing made me angrier then dispensing a 16oz glass only to taste it and find it flat because it vented all of the CO2 during the frothy pour. This happened too often for my taste.
I usually kept my freshly made soda in a bale swing top bottle with silicone gaskets. I found that my glass bottles had better carbonation at the end of the day then a plastic bottle with this NASA inspired piece of junk on it. With every dispense of soda the Jokari is taking some CO2 out of solution to power the dispenser, and that means each pour was steadily gaining in the flatness category. I could take a freshly poured growler spring top 2 liter and a plastic two liter with the jokari and by the end of the 2nd day the glass growler was almost always better carbonated and fresher tasting.
In the end I returned the product to amazon, who have a slick and professional return system.
