Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Jack LaLanne JLPJB Power Juicer Juicing MachineCustomer Review: Good juicer...horrible mess...Still need to chop fruits... Summary: 3 Stars
We were impressed with how the Golden Delicious apples were juicing and we enjoyed drinking it afterward. However, the mess that was left behind left us wondering if this machine was worth it.
The mess wasn't just stuff you can wipe off. It was all the pulp, left on the blade, that my wife actually had to scrape off with a knife.
One thing that was inaccurate from the TV ad was the fact that you could put whole fruits into the slot. The apples we used had to be cut in quarters for us to put them in. Large fruits won't fit.
We dedided to return the product because the mess wasn't worth it. Besides, to get the full benefit of fuits you need to eat them whole to get the fiber. Although the juicer worked great, we were basically drinking sugar water.
For potential buyers, I leave you with this scenario: If you want a good juicer and don't mind the mess then get this product. However, if you don't have the patience to be cleaning up 5 pieces full of pulp then don't bother.
Another thing is that this would be a great product for people who constanly use protein powder. You're getting the nutrition from the juiced fruits and the taste will drown out the awful taste of the protein powder. Again, mind the mess you'll be cleaning up afterward.
Customer Review: More trouble than what its worth Summary: 2 Stars
If you want juice, don't bother. This juicer does the job but the cleaning up and problems I had just isn't worth it.
First, the pulp attachment that sits in the back did not fit snugly. The attachment during operation on a smooth granite counter top detaches itself and the pulp falls in the crevice between the unit and the attachment creating a horrible mess. 5 minutes of cleanup.
Second, as the juice comes out of the spout, it spits out and splashes. Do not operate with the spout facing you wearing your good clothes!
Third, what a horrible mess to clean up. You have to clean the plunger, the pulp attachment, detach the base and clean it, then clean the sifter filter (must clean good because pulp gets stuck in the filter). It took me about 10 minutes to clean up and a half a roll of paper towel.
Fourth, the electrical cord is in a bad spot - right behind the attachment spout. So when the pulp falls out, it gets all over the cord. The cord should be moved more to the side of the unit.
Frankly, this is not what I thought it would be and too much trouble for what its worth. With the amount of vegetables I put in to make 1/2 gallon of juice I must have spent $10 bucks alone. Thats one helluva expensive 1/2 gallon of juice.
Customer Review: Not a great juicer Summary: 2 Stars
This juicer isn't nearly as good as it's claim. I've been using mine for a couple days now and not once has any decent amount of the pulp ever made to the pulp garbage bucket thing... it all stays clumped and wet all over the insides of the machine. It doesn't extract as much juice as it's claim, otherwise there wouldn't be so much wet, mushy pulp everywhere. When I remove the top piece, I have to be very careful because lots of mushy icky pulp starts plopping out all over the counter.
It doesn't do apples very good. Not only do the apples stop up the machine easily, but it barely gets any juice from them. If I were to put 5 medium apples through the machine, I wouldn't have a glass of juice.
Be ready for LOTS of cleanup. The pulp and the stains on the plastic. I'm very displeased. Yes, this one is only 99.99, but here's yet another example of false advertising. How can that man go on TV and claim a product does something it does not do?! I know it isn't only my machine, and I should have read the rest of the reviews here before purchasing.
Other reviews also mention the same issues but gave the machine 3-4 stars because of the price????? That makes no sense to me at all. Whatever the cost, a product should live up to all the claims in their ads.
Customer Review: Not what I thought it would be... Summary: 3 Stars
First of all, I would like to suggest that you should live next to a farmer's market or grow your own veg/fruits, otherwise the cost will add up quickly. I just made a 1-1/2 gallons of juice last night for the equivalent of about $20 (all sorts of veg/fruits). Like I said, find somewhere to get your ingredients cheap or just eat the food normally.
Second, as other people have commented, this juicer does not like small pieces (get thrown into the pulp collector) or as the book states, soft fruit (turns into the consistency of baby food=almost no juice).
Third, you should like to bake, as this creates a lot of pulp.
Fourth, one of the main problems that I have had with this machine, is that it continually shut down on me (like every 10 minutes or so). I am not sure if there was too much pulp in the filter or whether it was actually getting too hot, but none the less, it was a pain having to wait for the machine to operate again.
Finally, the juice is obviously the best part! It is very thick and delicious.
I am however, going to be returning the unit, as it requires citrus to be pealed (Rind is bitter tasting), and I have access to an abundance of oranges that can be juiced on a machine that costs about 10 bucks.
Customer Review: Good value for the money Summary: 4 Stars
I have 2 juicers, this one and another stainless steel one. The Jack LaLane web page refers to this model as the "Classic".
Juicers must have two functions to be of value: extract juice, and clean up well. This juicer, as you know, has a large chute for easy insertion of the product. This works well, most of the time. I have learned that a small item, like a carrot, in the large opening creates a lot of vibration and noise. It is best to insert several carrots to reduce this. This juicer also extracts most of the juice and leaves very dry pulp behind, always a good sign.
The motor is quiet and this is a pleasure to use.
The Classic also dis-assembles very easily, which is important. My other juicer requires me to separate the top from the bottom by prying them apart, which is always hard to do and is a pain, quite frankly.
To keep the costs down, LaLane has used plastic everywhere except the cutting blade. The plastic cleans well and there is no obvious advantage over stainless steel unless it breaks, of course. I have had to order several lost parts for this product, but they were readily available at modest cost and delivered in a reasonable length of time. The quirk about juicing is, if you juice one apple or 10 lbs., the clean up time is the same.
