Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Pro 8-inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife

Customer Review: a Chinese Henckels masterpiece woth 10 stars!
Summary: 5 Stars

Made in China but with German Solingen high carbon stainless steel and priced by amazon as if it were junk, this knife isas close to perfect as it comes: cuts as smoothly as a razor sharp smooth Henckels. The chinese outdid themselves with this one: even thehandle isperfectlyshaped.Atfirst sight it appeared a bit short me but it cut large warm italian breads without a hitch;I have one more wish fromHenckels; make a strong Magnetc strip to attach to a wall: blocks are a pain- theknife blades are hidden and the block takes up precious counterspace. Hoffritz makes such a strip, attractiveenough with its teak base butrather low in holding power: even"magnetic" stainless is less than strongly attracted by magnets. after a couple of knives slipping,I built a teak plaquewith a support just under the knives's handles. But noteverybody has these facilities, so?Henckels: listen-up!alternatively: a suitable hole in the knife's handle and a strip with appropriate hooks might also be a desirable new product,
thoughrequiring modification of the knives's handles.Oh YES:This $$$ knife even sports a full tang construction!

Customer Review: Rusted after leaving in water one time.
Summary: 1 Stars

Good sharp knife. It is a J.A. Henckels so you cant go wrong. The main problem with this one is that it is not the same quality stainless steal that is used in other more expensive knives made by the company. After leaving it overnight with some acidic food on it, it lost its shine. I tried cleaning it with baking soda and vinegar and that helped but it appears the surface "faded off". A few days ago I left it in a pot with some water in it as I did not have a chance to do dishes yesterday. I cleaned it off and noticed some small rust spots that had developed just overnight.

It may be a good knife but it should not be rusting like this. I have another chicago cutlerly bread knife which is 20 years old and I just throw that in the dishwasher when I'm done with it. It has never rusted. Basically, spend $5.00 more and get a chicago cutlery knife or spend $15 or $20 more for something of better quality. This is no better than the cheap walmart $5.00 bread knives from china.

Customer Review: Run To Buy This One!
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who loves homemade bread as much as ido (and who is lucky enough to have friend who specializes in making all sorts of it)needs a great bread knife to cut it correctly. lord knows, anyone who sticks to store-bought bread today just has no idea how delectable, tasty, and substantial good, nutritious, and carefully made home-baked bread can be!

That much said, this is the perfect tool for cutting it with, and it is now being offered at a brgain basement price, which means I am about to order another one now that they are even less expensive than before. So hurry before I buy them out! Hahaha. Anyway, even chewy bread yields easily to this knife, with some major league serrations, and are known as scallops." This is a really is an inexpensive piece of cutlery, and while they don't have bolsters and their blades are thinner and less strong, for the price one can hardly go wrong. Enjoy!

Customer Review: A worthy knife for bagel lovers...
Summary: 5 Stars

The name Henckels is assurance in itself of a quality knife as German ingenuity translates into this simple but utterly efficient device. There are many bagel cutting gadgets on the market, but look no further then Henckels to give the consumer a knife that can handle the crustiest of bagels with relative ease. The International series is an excellent value for anyone looking to start a Henckels set or anyone looking for an excellent value. These knives have durable blades and the handles are strong and well weighted making cutting even easier. No kitchen should be complete without the durabilty and ingenuity of a Henckels. Put this one on your wedding shower/engagement party gift list as no new kitchen would be complete without this superior bread knife.

Customer Review: Three strikes and it was gone
Summary: 2 Stars

This knife gave a performance roughly equal to what I paid for it. Bread knives aren't really precision cutting tools, they basically need to be able to get a good grip on a hard surface and not make too many crumbs. On both these counts this knife was not successful. The blade is rather thick and as a result converts a lot of whatever it cuts to crumbs. More importantly, the serrations did not stay sharp and had a tendency to slip. After three people, myself included, got cut as a result of the knife slipping on hard bread or a bagel that was the end. I replaced the knife with a Suisin bread knife, which, while more expensive and a little hard to find, is far better as a bread knife.
