Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of J.A. Henckels International Everedge 13-Piece Knife Set with Bonus Cheese Knife

Customer Review: They are just OK
Summary: 3 Stars

If you've never used the highest-quality-line of Henckels or Wusthof and need a beginner's basic set which includes everything, you'll probably be very [to extremely] happy with this set. They make great wedding gifts for young, first-time couples. (Don't forget [folklore] 'the lucky penny' in the box when giving a knife as a gift!!)

They are very sharp but do Not have a 'good feel' in your hand. They weigh next to nothing --they are not full-tang (metal of blade does not run threw the cheap-looking, plastic handle) but the block reads "Henckels" --a nice quality distinction!

Just FYI, Everedge or anything indicating "always sharp" are Great for three to five years, especially if you DON'T put them in the dishwasher.

No Good knife should ever be put in the dishwasher!!

I have never minded sharpening my knives, but if you're looking for a decent 'never needs sharpening' (again, good for a few years), look at the Henckels "Eversharp Pro" Series because they're weighted properly and feel good in your hand.

I hope this helps someone. Blessings!!! Lisa

Customer Review: Good value; price + quality
Summary: 4 Stars

There is a nice set of reviews out for this product (except for the most popular one, the dissertation on buying knives, which is interesting, but irrelevant to this product).

Given that, I just wanted to add my voice to those who note that this set provides a nice mix of price and quality.

Sure, these aren't the best knives out there. But they're cheap, and they're sturdy. They have worked well for us around the house, for eating, and daily food preparation. The blades and handles will last, and will provide many years of use.

I will be the first to acknowledge that there are knives out there of higher quality. And while the discount here on amazon looks impressive, it is a bit misleading -- there is no way these knives are worth the list price.

But for the price -- again, that is the dealmaker here -- I think you can do yourself and family well picking this set up. If you don't want to spend several hundred dollars on daily-use kitchen knives, I think you have found a good choice with this option.

Customer Review: Good for general home use.
Summary: 4 Stars

For the price, this is a decent set of knives for people like me who aren't professional chefs and don't have the patience/discipline to maintain a more high quality set of knives. I've been using these for about a week now. The butcher knife is heavier than my former Farberware version, but the other knives are similar in weight. The block they come in is small and elegant, good for kitchens with tight storage space. I've mostly hand washed them but have run the smaller steak knives through the dishwasher, in the silverware racks on the bottom, without problems thus far. The knives are a bit on the light side, except for the butcher, so if you like a heavier feel to your knives you may want to find another set.

PROS:
Small, elegant wood block
Great basic set of knives for everyday use
Low price
Seem to be ok in the dishwasher
Don't need to be sharpened

CONS:
Very lightweight knives, the steak knives especially, almost to the point of feeling "flimsy"
Edge sometimes make cutting delicate things like tomatoes awkward

Customer Review: Great Bargain
Summary: 4 Stars

Unlike my predecessor I am by no means a kitchen knife expert, but I do use them. Granted they are not the best quality and you will not be able to pass them down to your children, but for $40 who cares? If they last us 5 years I'd be happy.
I bought them as a present for my wife and she loves them. The knives are sharp and functional, you have to read the pamphlet and take care of them as instructed and they will last longer.

I am the type of person that would spend the more money on quality items when given the opportunity, and agree that these knives are not top of the line but unless you are a professional chef or a serious hobbyist these will do just fine.
These are great knives for the busy family on a tight budget.

Five year update: we still have the knives, they are still sharp. We clean them as per the instructions and use them on a daily base.

Customer Review: Absolute Crap, Even at This Price
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought these with the intention of gifting them. I wasn't looking for high end cutlery, just a cheap but well made set of knives. I would be embarrassed to present these to someone. You could pick up knives of comparable quality at the dollar store.

These knives are shoddy, and shouldn't be sold for more than $[...]. The handles are made of cheap plastic, are uncomfortable, and poorly balanced. The blades are too thin, too flexible, and they are all serrated (fine if you want to tear rather than cut your food I guess).

For the price you can do a lot better. I immediately returned this item when I saw the poor quality. Henckel should be ashamed to put their name on this garbage.

I picked up a set of Cooks brand cutlery from J.C. Penny for about the same price with full tang riveted handles, fairly balanced, and smooth bladed.
