Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of J.A. Henckels International Everedge 13-Piece Knife Set with Bonus Cheese KnifeCustomer Review: A nice starter set and a great value for the money Summary: 4 Stars
This set is the entry level for J. A. Henckels and they've been offering it in the US for a while at many major department stores. This isn't the premium top-end line to show off on your counters, but the day-in, day-out ones to use. We've had our set for about 7 or 8 years now and have been very pleased with it, even though we are considering upgrading. The key difference between this and the higher grade Henckels knives are that these are stamped rather than forged. And while Henckels claims the microserration of the blades mean they'll never need sharpening I beg to differ as they seem to be getting duller or less effective, especially when compared to a newer forged steel knife we've recently bought. That's hardly a concern as the steak knives do fine for eating and the other knives are more than adequate for most needs. We've never run ours through the dishwasher and I strongly recommend hand washing instead. We've given sets to family members as gifts and they have run theirs through the dishwasher and they do not hold up well to repeated washings.
Ultimately this set is for folks who want a nice set of knives at an entry level price point. That they carry the Henckels name is an added bonus, but it does rather diminish the name. More than likely Henckels is hoping buyers will like this set enough to move up to the premium brand. If so, mission accomplished as that's what we're about to do.
Customer Review: Can't believe this is made by Henckel!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I have several Henckel knives, from both the Pro S and 4 Star Series. Henckel knives are precisioned to balance even in your hand giving you better controll while cutting, plus they are made out of the highest quality stainless steel with very strong, durable handle, thus the high prices you have to pay for them. With those selling points in mind, note the price for this entire 13 piece set including the butcher block display. At $29.99 the International Eversharp Henckels Series set is priced less than any single Henckel knife in any of the other lines. And as the saying goes "You get what you pay for!" meaning, you ain't getting much in the way of knives with these. They look real good sitting on the kitchen counter but that's where the Henckels standards stop. They are nothing at all like the original Henckels so if that's what your looking for you will be highly disappointed. These are light weight and remind me of the knives you use to get free at the supermarket everyweek you spend so much on groceries, if anyone can remember those times. These would be a good gift for that wedding shower invitation where you don't really know the bride but a distant friend of groom. They would make you purchase the bride a very expense gift, just be sure you never see her after the wedding. Need less to say I didn't care for these at all.
Customer Review: For the money... you can't go wrong!! Summary: 4 Stars
We purchased these knives...and think they've been worth every penny. They're sharp, comfortable to grip, aesthetically appealing, and come in a nice assortment. Certain knives like the Chef's knife and the table/steak knives have become the proverbial 'work horse' of the set while the tomato knife hasn't really seen the light of day since it left the box. The polypropylene handles are capable of withstanding high temperatures and, because of their nature, do not harbor bacteria like some sets that contain rivets or those with wooden handles. While this is a great set, it is not a high-end set, so you may want to look elsewhere if that's what you're after. None of the knives have a full-tang (where the steel goes all the way through the handle) or rivets. The handles are plastic. Also, the steel is from Japan (if I'm not mistaken) instead of Germany and boy, do the Germans know how to make steel! So, dear friends, if you're looking for a set that you can pass on to your children and your children's children then you should indeed move up the Henckels line or look into Cutco (my favorites) or another high-end set. If you're looking to buy a good, inexpensive set that looks great and is every bit as functional, then look no more! Also, consider looking into a pair of kitchen shears... they're indespensible!
Customer Review: Piece of Junk! Summary: 1 Stars
As someone who cooks a lot, I am a big fan of the J.A. Henkels Twin Pro S series of knives. When my grandmother needed a new set of knives, I felt I could not go wrong with these J.A. Henckels - unfortunately I was dead wrong!
Now, I knew I was not buying that the best of knives, but these things have an extremely flimsy blade with no carbon content, they are all serrated and cannot be sharpened, they feel inferior even when compared with off-brand economic knives and are not even heavy or stiff enough to execute a controlled cut of anything. Occasionally, I have had no choice but to use these when helping my grandmother out, both she and I have managed to accidentally slice our fingers with these things, and the handle of th 8" chefs knife has been loose for quite some time, and although they are dishwasher safe, that poor chefs knive is pitted with rust spots. They are awful! Now (less than 2 years later) I need to get her another set. For a much lower price than what I paid for this set (two years ago: $70), I'm debating the 10 piece Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan knives or possibly springing for the 7 piece Henckel Twin Signature as she (and I) tend to use only a few of the knives frequently - each of which I have actually used.
Customer Review: A Slice of Heavon Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this set of knives based on reviews and stars. For the price It had the most stars and best reviews. But i figured I'd like them but not love them. Well I was really wrong I love them. I used to have a set of Farberware Knives that i got as a gift from me Grammy. I thought they were great knives. Till these arrived. I like them so much I have been making meals that I would have to use them with. I also treat them a lot better no dishwasher for these babies I hand wash and dry and back to block. Atleast this way I'll never have to worry about melting the handle in the dishwasher again(HInt On why i needed new knives). For that reason alone i think the price is worth it. From one of the review I figured It would have cheap feeling steal but it was much thick and alot less bend able then my old Faberware knives. I only have one complaint they give you 13 knives but only 12 spaces for them in the block. They are so sharp that the 13th knives is put up just in case my 2 year old goes in the silverware bin where I would have put it. So that's why i gave it 4 instead of 5. Case I'll hardly use the one knive cause of saftly. Husband would just put in the silverware bin with our cheap steak knives.
