Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Imusa Tortilla Warmer

Customer Review: You're going to waste time because of the packaging
Summary: 1 Stars

My wife and I always heat tortillas up on our grill or in a non stick skillet. We thought this would be fun and convenient since it looked to be exactly the same thing that all of the local Mexican restaurants use to serve tortillas. The item shows up shrink wrapped with a big paper label glued to one side. No big deal right? Wrong. That label ended up taking forever to remove due to the adhesive that was used, which seems to be some interesting cross between the sap of the gum tree and some kind of highly adhesive wolverine spittle.

After removing the label we still couldn't get all of the tacky residue removed. Even after running it through the dishwasher and cleaning it with contractor grade solvent remover. Finally I bought a bottle of goo gone professional spray and it SEEMS as though every trace of the satan glue is gone.

So, I would say, avoid this product. It might be functional and it is very affordable.. but when you realize that the manufacturer decided to save a few cents using the cheapest demon glue they could find to attach the label and that you will spend a couple of hours of your life removing it you realize it just isn't worth it.

Customer Review: DO YOU LIKE UNREMOVABLE LABELS?
Summary: 1 Stars

As tortilla warmers go, this one is OK. HOWEVER, BEWARE. This manufacturer places an almost impossible to remove label on this product. To remove, I tried soaking it in hot water for 2-hours, wiping with denatured alcohol and acetone and finally soaking it in gasoline and scraping with a putty knife to remove the label. None of these methods worked well but I finally got it off with the gasoline and scraping method I described. Then, I had to wash it several times and run it through the dishwasher to ensure that all the solvent was removed. I don't know about you, but this process was a major pain and I feel it is irresponsible for companies to place labels on their products which are not easily removed. I understand their concerns about people peeling off labels and creating fraud, but, many responsible companies TEST THEIR PRODUCTS BEFORE SUBJECTING THEIR CUSTOMERS to an adverse experience. It's obvious that this company is NOT concerned with their customer's experience with their product as demonstrated with their lack of quality testing prior to distribution of their product. If you decide to purchase, be prepared for a major efforts to remove their labels.

Customer Review: Lose that horrible stuck on label!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have always wanted one of these, because I love to serve warm tortillas with a Mexican meal, or sometimes just as a quick snack with butter and salsa or queso dip. Although it is easy enough to warm them by placing them in any small covered baking dish with a moistened paper towel and microwaving for a few seconds, unfortunately that method doesn't KEEP them warm very long at the table. This item is very similar to those used in most Mexican restaurants. However, it is a bit wider in diameter than I expected (presumably to accommodate larger flour tortillas for fajitas or burritos). I actually prefer the smaller corn tortillas, but I suppose it's better for it to be a bit too large than a bit too small.

My only major complaint is one that I have seen mentioned by several other reviewers - that large label on the outside that is almost impossible to remove completely. Even after soaking in warm soapy water, I was able to scrub off most of the label itself, but not the sticky adhesive that is embedded in the textured surface. Very frustrating! The manufacturer really needs to address this issue.

Customer Review: Not deep enough
Summary: 3 Stars

This thing is good at keeping tortillas warm, but it's not deep enough for a batch of homemade tortillas. It will hold two 10 packs of store-bought tortillas that are thin, but the homemade tortillas, which I can never get as thin as store-bought, keep the lid ajar. The container is deep enough, but the bottom of the lid has a "dip" in it that presses against the tortillas and keeps the lid from closing tightly. What a shame. I guess I'll be purchasing the larger warmer.

With tortillas getting expensive AND being filled with hydrogenated vegetable oils, I finally found a SOFT tortilla recipe that I can easily roll out with a rolling pin. It's 3 cups of self-rising flour, 1 cup of warm milk and 5 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix it into a ball by hand or in a food processor. I don't even have to let them sit for 20 minutes. Just divide into 12 balls, lay a damp paper towel over them as you roll each out (roll from the center out) and then cook for about 30 seconds per side in a skillet. Other tortilla recipes were difficult to roll out and tasted hard like crackers.

Customer Review: When will they learn?
Summary: 1 Stars

Ok, so most of the time when I see a 1 star review I figure that the customer either just for some personal reason hates the product, or misunderstood its use and instead of admitting it, they just blame it on the product.

I am giving this 1 star not because it is dysfunctional or a bad product. It gets 1 star because the label that is stuck to the thing was next to impossible to get off. I mean the adhesive was pretty much one with the plastic. I tried a heat gun, hot water, soap and then eventually resorted to using a chemical compound (goof-off) to remove the sticky film. Considering that this is a food container, one should not have to resort to toxic chemicals just to remove the label.

Maybe I am just the lucky one that ended up with the bad label, but I so often see this happen. Companies use the wrong kind of sticker on a plastic product resulting in this extremely poor user experience. When will they learn?

Beware...
